What an incredible odyssey. I am tech support for my 76-year-old mother, who is reasonably tech-y (thankfully) and on an iMac (BLESSEDLY). I can’t imagine your pain!

SDPH — Is AOL even still around? Serious question. I’m so glad I got him off that. When I moved him to Verison DSL, I introduced him to Internet Explorer and Firefox (which he insists on calling FireFAX — drives me nuts). Polka every day. It’s like water and air to him!

Fan of BoA — I can’t believe people play that Solitaire game as much as they do. I see people using it at work all the time and think “You do know they’ve developed really awesome PC games since 1990, right?”

TC – Ah, my sympathies to you! Sorry about your Dad’s Alzheimers. Terrible disease. Without it, me thinks he’d have latched onto PCs and internet like candy. I love that my Dad is a total PC and internet junkie still. We often wonder what he’d have done with all his retirement years without both. He never really had a hobby, per se. And this is it! Thanks for commenting.

I can totally relate after being the computer guru for the family.
BUT computers came too late for my dad, I never could figure out why the guy who built a computerized digital radio wave detector (a box with lights that flashed in a ramdomm pattern) in the 60s, wasn’t like thrilled by my first computer and the internet in 96, he had early alzhemers but we didnn’t know it. So cherish your dad and his game …..GO DAD!!!!!!

Wow this is so true and has been in my family for over a decade. If it can launch AOL and Solitaire then their PC is running 100%.

This is hilarious. My husband is tech support for both sides of our family…he feels your pain. We got his mother a computer about five years ago and she loves it. She is now 77 and figured out how to open a FaceBook account. He also instructs his 86 year old aunt via telephone to install her computer software.

Epic. Seriously Epic. And you know that now he has broadband he’ll be able to learn about even newer technologies.
I only know the pieces of a computer. I can’t make them work. That puts me in the dangerous position of seeming like a computer geek without actually being one. Stories like this make me want to seem as ignorant as possible.
This was a fun read. I can see why it’s in your greatest hits.
