When I flew first class my logic was this. If I flew coach (for 6 hours) my day would be just another awful travel day. If I flew first class, my vacation started when I got on the plane. That totally made it worth the outrageous price. There were only two passengers in first class, so our flight attendant left us alone to go help in the back. A lady with two terrible children sent her kids up to play in first class so they wouldn't bother the people around her. All the Delta flights booked for my company had the miles pooled, so it was just a lottery when you checked in; if you happened to be the lucky employee who happened to be on the road when there were enough for a free upgrade, they'd automatically give it to you. I sat next to the CEO of a large multinational corporation who smelled wonderful and when the flight attendant gave him a handful of tiny bottles of Bombay Blue Sapphire, he explained how he fills out the little cards saying how wonderful they are so they get perks from the company, and they take care of him, because he flies a ridiculous amount of miles every month and knows them all. The rest was a softly lit blur that included a snuggly blanket, an actual hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and a cherry, and the most pleasant of naps.
