@ Bluesleepy — Don’t worry, I think the weather is supposed to get more fall-like this week! I spent the afternoon with my sister and niece as an amusement park yesterday and couldn’t believe the heat. Kept saying to myself “Stop complaining. It’ll be winter before I know it!”

I LOVE the fall. My daughter was born in Oct (tomorrow, in fact), and I was married in October as well. We were married in Virginia, so it was sort of a late summer day, not quite autumn, but it was lovely. How could you not enjoy the crisp air, the smell of fires laid in fireplaces, the cooler temperatures, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the beauty of the changing colors??

I wax eloquent only because I haven't had fall in over four years. In Seattle, summer sort of slides (literally once the rain starts) into winter. All the trees are evergreen, so you don't get fall colors. It's a shame.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more fall weather here in Rhode Island! We went to an art fest today and sweated like there was no tomorrow.

@ Cardiogirl — sorry we’re leaving your favorite season! At least we’re having a late heatwave. Here, we’re getting high 80′s this weekend. Crazy!

p.s. I’m still coming down off that post about the bug in your husband’s ear. My encounter with the praying mantis this week pales by comparison. Is your husband still freaked out? He must be. OK, I need to stop thinking about it now

I just love the image of meaty paws!

But I have to disagree with you regarding the heat of summer. Oh how I love summer! I am sad to see it go and I refuse to wear socks with my low tops until the temps remain at 62 degrees Fahrenheit all day long.

That's my silent protest to fall and winter.

@ Regan — Yeah, “true meaning.” Who needs it?!?!

@ JD — I feel that sickness, too. I can’t think straight when I’m hot. I’m convinced brain cells get agitated in the heat, explode and die. I just can’t concentrate when I’m all puffy and uncomfortable.

The meaty paw affliction is sometimes very bad. After a long walk in the heat, I get to maximum paw and then can’t bend my fingers. It helps if I hold my hands up like a surgeon does when washing up for surgery, to let blood flow away from my paws, but that usually embarrasses those I’m with. So I just suffer with my big mitts until I can cool down.

Are you my secret twin? I couldn’t agree more about loving fall – especially as it brings an end to heat and humidity. Now, I have to say, humidity is actually very kind to my hair, which is thick and body-less; humidity kind of puffs it up. But otherwise, yeah, heat makes me crabby, lethargic, and I truly believe there is something I have yet to invent called “humidity sickness,” because I honestly feel that terrible on humid days.

Oh, and I’m totally stealing “meaty paws,” as that’s the most hilarious thing I’ve heard.

You know those birthday cards and stuff that have that old lady with gray hair and her dog? Even if you don’t, it was that lady pointing her finger at you and saying ‘Halloween is the best time of year. All that candy and joy without that “true meaning” crap’

@ Kev — And that’s another reason I don’t understand why people flock to Florida. They must spend most of the year inside with the A/C blasting. What’s the point of living there if you can’t enjoy the outdoors?

I’m with you on the heat. Give me fall/winter 365 days a year. You can always bundle up with warmer clothes if cold, but in the heat there’s only so far you can dress down before you’re arrested for indecency…
