Happy Birthday, Junk Drawer!
Fun, food July 29th, 2008One year ago today, the Junk Drawer opened for business. I’m very excited, as I never dreamed my blog would make it this far or that I would be blessed with the readership I have. Also, there’s going to be cake.
But this day isn’t about me — it’s all about you! And cake.
Thank you for your visits here. Thank you for leaving me the most hilarious comments in The Drawer. Thank you for making me feel that it’s OK to be a little bent. Well, a lot bent.
If you commented here, put me in your blogroll, Stumbled my posts, told your friends about me, subscribed to my feed or bought me cake, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I’m deeply grateful to have met so many of you online and gotten to know you through your blogs and emails. I feel like The Junk Drawer belongs to all of us. We’re a community. Writing here and reading your responses has been some of the most fun I’ve had in my life, with or without cake. Toast yourselves and know that I wouldn’t keep doing this if not for you.
Please celebrate this milestone with me and give yourselves a pat on the back for being a part of The Junk Drawer’s success and remember that birthdays are a fun time to look back on the past year, examine our lives and ….. oh, shut up Kathy! Serve the CAKE already!
Pass me a fork!
Everyone’s a year older at Humor-Blogs.com

WOOO!!! Happy Birthday, Kathy and The Junk Drawer!
Ahem:
O, Junk Drawer, thou art one year old
So many stories have ye told
We’re here to celebrate your birth
And thank you for a year of mirth
We love each snarky, funny tale
Beside which other blog posts pale
We’ve read about your big, fat head
And times you wished that you were dead
You shared with us your table butt
And never made it sound like smut
That bag of lard, your fear of dogs
Thank god you found the world of blogs
Your BlogHer ad raised no ill will
We learned to love a voice named Phil
The plastic bag: still in its tree
Who will the winner be — JD?
Your bacon love is now well-known
And Amy’s brain still makes us groan
We can never get enough
Of your food that looks like stuff
Even when you’re in a funk
You manage still to churn out Junk
So here’s to Kathy and her Drawer
You always leave us wanting more

My very first comment in the Drawer was when you taught us that Cats cannot differentiate real objects from HD.
Since then, I don’t think I ever left.
I remember you were looking to move to your own domain and a most memorable time was because everyone on the Blokester network moved to Wordpress at the same time.
Thank you for making the past 10 months of the best times I’ve had on the web. I learned a lot, I laughed a lot and I’ve made many more friends through the drawer.

haleyhughes — Thank you. I’m so excited to start off the another year with a bang! God, I hope my next post isn’t a stinker.
Jaffer — Oh, boy. That seems so long ago. Thank you for sticking with me all this time. Oh, and Blogger is just a distant memory. The stress of that move was awful, but I have you and Bloke to thank for holding my hand when I needed it. I’m glad you found new friends here. I’m smiling now because I realize how many of my own I’ve made and I’m such a happy girl today!
Geakz — I would expect nothing less than your patented 5-point commenting system on this day. How in the world did you even come up with that? You’ve been doing it so long, I can’t remember where you started it. OK, wait. It was on “Mother of All Bad Pictures.” Ah, the memories. Thank you for adding your unique dash of flavor to The Drawer, Geakz.
Blog Bloke — The Man! I can say without a doubt, I would not be where I am today without your help, support and friendship. You gave me all the tools I needed to start this thing right, get myself over to WordPress and to make sound improvements that led to a better blog. I’m indebted to you, my friend. Thanks so much for giving me a leg up and sticking with me.
Poetikat — Thank you so much, Kat. I won’t let you down. You can count on a myriad posts about the latest ways I’ve embarrassed myself (or my husband). Thank you for being a loyal reader. It means everything to me.
VE — If only! I would love to have shared the cake with everyone. It was so sweet and delicious. And to think I can have more for breakfast tomorrow! Yea, baby!
Rattln Along — Ah, thanks for trying. I think I can hear a faint “happy birthday” in the distance. So glad to have you on board. Let’s drink to Year 2!
Alan — If you want a Windy, it’ll have to be a replica. The original, assuming it EVER gets out, stays with me. BTW, Windy is looking pretty sad lately. This week it took a turn. It’s still stuck the same way, but it’s very saggy-looking.
StephanieC — Ah, there she is! Thanks for coming to the party. I know you’re in and out of the blogosphere, so it means a lot to me that you still make time to visit. As for the book, if I could ever find another four hours in the day, it’s going to happen. I’m very worried it’ll never get off the ground.
Susan — I think we met over at Bernie’s place, right? I’m so glad he threw us up on his blogroll. He created a great way for some of us Lehigh Vally bloggers to meet. Now I wonder if the Morning Call will have us? Tee hee!
don — Sorry, but that’s what you get for licking the screen. Now go to your nearest bakery and get yourself the real goods. Pretend it’s your birthday. No one will be the wiser.
Lee — Lee! It would have killed you if I put a bra on that cake, wouldn’t it? You know, that’d be just something I’d do to get a laugh out of you. Thank you for dropping in. You have been such a good friend, adviser and SAVIOR! I love using Windows Live Writer for blogging. I don’t know if I would have found out about it unless you mentioned it. In a way, you are behind every post I write. Thank you, bud!
chatblanc — Thank you! Oh, the cake was so awesome. After I finish here, I’m gonna sneak another slice. It’s late-ish for cake, but hey. You only have one 1st birthday!
Babs beetle — I enjoyed both renditions in my head. What say you make a Voki of them? I dare you! Thank you so much for the compliments. You’re such a sweetheart and I’m so happy to have found you and your blogs. Thank you also for some great exchanges offline and your help with BlogHer. You’ll always be the BQ!
Regan — So your Mom tells me you can’t come to my house for any of the cake? What am I going to do? Eat it all myself? I don’t think even I can do that. I’ll get you your Junk Drawer mug soon! Thanks for being my blog’s Number 1 fan! I can always count on you for a funny or insightful comment here. Do you know how many people you’ve surprised when they find out you’re a pre-teen? That’s a testament to your writing skills and you know what that means. You need a blog!
Lori — Shhh! Don’t tell Lee I’m not wearing one! JD’s poem was one of the highlights of my day. I smiled ear to ear reading it. I’m glad we discovered each other because you’re as cracked as me. I love it! And you are so right. I have always said I have THE best commenters that any blogger could wish for. It’s incredible to me the crowd of people who’ve surfaced here. I’m truly blessed and happy to have you among them!
Riayn — There you are! I’ve missed you over at your blog. Wait a minute. You have a new blog? Geez. I’ve really been away. OK, I’m bookmarking you sister! Thank you for your good wishes.
Rickey Henderson — Glad to have you on board as a relative newcomer. Kathy likes when Rickey visits the Junk Drawer! Stick around for Year 2!
Jeff — Jeff, Jeff, Jeff. You’re making me blush. Hear me now and listen to me later — you are one of the funniest men I know in the blogosphere. I don’t know how we found each other, maybe Humor Blogs.com, but I feel so lucky to have met you. I love how these connections just happen so haphazardly, but lead to bigger things. We went through a lot together moving to our own domains, and shared in the success of our Audio Anonymous series (btw, probably time for another). What a trip, eh? Looking forward to another year following your gut-busting blog. And just for you, I may talk about my ass again. Will quarterly do it?
Jenny!!! — Wow, I can’t remember how we stumbled on each other either! This is really tough trying to remember where the connections were made. Thank you, funny lady, for the well wishes!

LOBO — Thanks! Good to have you as a new member of the Drawer. Did anyone fill you in on the secret handshake?
Shadowsrider — Thank you! I’m glad to have you as a loyal reader. Um, about the cake. Uh, it was, um the real sugary kind, which I love in a sheet cake. I’m sorry. Will you still be my friend?
mizmell — It was so good, so sweet! I have a huge sugar hangover this morning. Does more cake cure it?
Ron — Ah, thanks! When I spotted your blog, I realized we are cut from the same bent cloth. That makes me feel better. We crazies have to stick together.
unfinishedperson — I’m glad we made a connection (and with Dispatches, too — God, I love that place). Thank you, and now I’m headed off to read your latest post because it has poop in it. Oh, my. Your poor car! Hilarious post. Had a nice rhythm to it. “Whoopdie do!”
kara — Thanks! I love your idea of carrots. Sounds like it has almost as much sugar as my cake. Now stop licking your screen.
Forest — I have no idea how it happened, but I’m so joyful that it did. I hope I can make everyone’s visits worth the click. I’ll keep doing this as long as people show up. “Amazing cake” I think that’s a song… Amazing cake, how sweet it is…
Musing — Thanks, Musing! I’m glad to have you as a regular visitor and thrilled to have found your Blogtations site. Love what you did with the quirk post recently. We’re a weird bunch, eh?
Stephanie — My problem was I cut very tiny pieces, but I ate six of them.
DrowseyMonkey — I read about your upcoming blog birthday on Babs’ blog and I’m so happy for you! You’re on my daily must-read list, too! So, you gonna have cake? Make it vanilla and I’ll be right over!
funboxcomedy — I think I’m more excited about this birthday that I would be my own. And no birthday is complete without cake, even for a non-human. BTW, the guy at the bakery didn’t bat an eye when I gave him the photo and the words to put on it. He probably sees everything!
Luxor — Thank you and welcome aboard. Stay tuned for another year of craziness, embarrassment and “Did she really say that?” moments.
esther — Welcome to the Drawer! Come back for Year 2 and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Monkeys wearing clown suits. And doing the macarena.
Mike Foster — Oh, man. I missed a Gaffigan cake bit? I know of the ones for bacon and Hot Pockets, which are laugh riots. I’m off to Google the cake one. Thanks for hanging out here. It’s good to have you!
Ricardo Bueno — Oh, my, yes, you still get cake (in theory, anyway). Think of it this way. I eat all the cake in everyone else’s names, but you don’t have to gain the weight. Thanks for fast becoming a regular here. I always enjoy your visits. Yes, the community here is awesome and I don’t for a minute take it for granted. I’m so blessed.
Cromely — It is and I can’t believe it! In the first three months, I thought things were tanking. I’m so glad I hung in there.
sasha — Thank you! Everyone here makes me work my hardest. I’m looking forward to another great year!
Chris (Casey) — I hope so! If it’s not, I’m coming after you because you jinxed me. You don’t want the Wrath of Kath.

sammawow — You picked a fine day to drop in. It’s not every day I have cake.
Marie — Thanks and I’ll take your good wishes. I have a good feeling about Year 2!
brooke — That’s the most fun version of Happy Birthday I ever saw! Thank you, dear Brooke! You go in a very special tiny category of people who have read and commented on the majority of my posts. That’s quite an achievement for you!
Carla — You can have what’s left of the cyber cake. It’s dwindling now. Belly hurts. Diets be damned!
Grant — You know me. If I had been at work today, I’d have brought you some. How about next birthday?
Monique — I’m glad you’re here now. I’m getting dug in at your blog. Had trouble finding your comments link on your boob post. I see I can comment now, but couldn’t earlier when there were no comments. Am I that dumb? Don’t answer that.
Canucklehead — There was no bar. We toasted with milk. That’s the only thing that goes with cake. Listen, dude. Your blog rocks and I especially love your new baby’s “Fight the Power” picture. It’s hanging in my office and I’m using it for my background on the laptop. I need that on a mug (I know, I asked for a t-shirt). Hey, didn’t we meet over at JD’s place? She’s a great matchmaker.
Hawksdomain — I will never let you down by going sane all of a sudden. No worries.
Lin — Oh, you must find out your birthday. If for no other reason than to have cake. Your blog is so well-researched and well-written. It deserves to be celebrated!
Daisy the Curly Cat — You can lick the cake, but I think then it needs to not be eaten by humans. You won’t be offended, will you?
Deborah Robinson — Thank you! You know, you’re right. I read that statistic all the time. Blogs many times fall off the face of the earth at the 3-6 month period. I’m glad I made it past the do-or-die point!
My Bug Life — Thanks! BTW, yours is the only blog with a bug on it that I can actually look at. I stopped dropping on one that has a spider for its avatar. EWWW!
Jenn — Ah! You brought bacon! That is the best gift ever! I’ll take it and I’m not sharing. Is that OK?
kuting — Thanks! And wouldn’t my cake go great with your blog?
Bruce — The cake was marble, so best of both worlds! Oh, man. I’m jonesing for more! I know some people who drink soda with cake, which I think is horrid. Milk’s the only choice! Thanks for hangin’ out in the Drawer. Great to have you as a loyal reader.
Bucky — Thanks for saying that I do! Sometimes I still shake my head that you guys come here and read me. I’m forever amazed.
Patricia — Thanks, and yes, it was. So sweet and delicious. Hmmm, wonder what other reason I can use to get another cake? Maybe because it’s Wednesday?
Karen, author of My Funny Dad, Harry — Thank you! It’s funny. A lot of fellow blogger friends are around their first year mark. Seems to be a spate of them. Yes, celebrate your blog’s milestones. It’s definitely fun to mark the occasion. Cake helps.
Jay — Oh, how nice. Thank you. I’m so lucky in a lot of ways. Without my great readers, this would be nothing at all. The Junk Drawer works because of amazing visitors like you. I don’t cook. EVER. This cake was from a grocery store bakery that can put an image on top from a picture you give them. They did a great job!

Ferd — Hey! Good to see you! And thank you. I’m still on my birthday high. But not much cake is left. Some of my family just left. We knocked off some more, and I made them leave with half of what’s left. We made great progress! There’s perhaps only 5 square inches remaining.
KFJ — Love your song. I feel like dancing! Speaking of fix, that’s one of my new taglines for magnets: “I’m a Junk Drawer junkie. Get your fix at…” and then the URL. I’m glad to oblige!
Lady Rose — The icing was sweet and delicious! My mother always said “Eat to live, don’t live to eat.” But I’ve not been too faithful to that in my adult life. Tomorrow I work off the cake!
Lady Banana — Wow! Two “Ladys” in a row. How ’bout that. Thank you and it was de-LISH! I only wish I could have really shared it with you, but I guess you guys wouldn’t have traveled all the way to Pennsylvania, would you?
Joe — Thanks, and stick around for Year 2. There’ll be a bigger cake next year and maybe I’ll fly people in for a party.
sue — Don’t you dare say that! Every time I read your blog I think “God, I wish I could write like that.” No one can compete with Bathtub Gangsta. No one! Enjoy your wine and have a glass for me.
tfa — It was a hippy, trippy birthday if I must say so myself. Thanks for coming to the party!
Lauren — Hmmm, let’s say if I make it to the big leagues I bring you all in for a big bash. Cake for everyone! Glad you stopped by!

Happy Belated Birthday to The Junk Drawer! I have to make sure that I am late so as to appear at the last of the comment and then maybe you’ll remember me better and then maybe I can get a bigger piece of the cake … of course if there was any left
July 31st, 2008 at 4:21 am
Carol — Thanks! And sorry, it’s not much of a cake anymore. It’s a wee little square.
fragileheart — It was a good-looking cake. Now it’s just a corner and most of that is icing. I loved it while it lasted.
Lisa — Oh, no! What’s the Sprout network? I guess that’s one of twenty kids channels I never saw, me being kidless. I’m sure it was a nice little ditty. Thank you!
the fearless blog — Thanks! (Thinking of polishing off the last piece for breakfast).
julia — Thanks. Good for you for making it past the first blogging hump. Maybe on your birthday you should have a full buffet spread! And cake, of course.
Amy who has a mostly clear nose — Thanks, dear! I had a little twinge of “Hmmm, cake for my blog birthday? Kinda weird.” But I got over it real fast. Me loves the sheet cake!
anya — Thanks. And I did, but now I want another reason to buy cake.
BK — Way to plan it! Except for the cake part. You didn’t know that I’m capable of polishing off large amounts of food in short order. Maybe I need a bigger cake next time. And I should celebrate shorter milestones, like every month. I think I’m on to something.

Oh, Kathy. You had to say it. You’ve never heard the Birthday song from Sprout. You’ve never even heard of Sprout. Well, you know me, and you know my daughter. So, please, let me share the song that all us parents of toddlers must hear multiple times a day, every day.

I’m so glad I found your blog, and you should know that I offer you a silent toast every time I have bacon now. alexis-marie — Welcome! You picked a great day to show up. I almost never have cake on the blog. Bacon, all the time. Cake, not always. Stick around!
Grant — Will you kill me if I tell you that I didn’t think the song was so bad? Or is this one of those songs that’s only grating after the hundredth time? Thanks for keeping me informed on the kid TV front.
Shieldmaiden96 — She’s here! She’s here! Glad you made it. I’ve been savin’ a seat for ya. I’d love to have a PA bloggers get-together. I’d try to organize it, but I’m lousy at that stuff. I’m in if someone wants to try, as long as I have GPS in my car. Or have Dave drive me. Or hire a driver. You know. The getting lost thing. Can’t y’all just come to my house?
Laura — Oh, I do adore your doodly avatar! Glad you dropped in. Good to have new faces. I only wish I had cake to offer. There really isn’t much left. Next year!
NanjoDogz — Thanks for dropping by and for the well wishes!
o.d. — Thank you. Yea, I loved the cake. Maybe I’ve even inspired some to put strange things on their next cakes? I want to see other logos on cakes! Let’s have it people.
Elle — Oooo, what a fun comment! Yep, the cake was sweet and delicious. Only a little bit left. Good dessert doesn’t last long in our household!

Kathy:
Cool idea. Okay, I give myself big kudos for reading your blog. Thanks. Plus, tomorrow is my Queen’s birthday, so I don’t have to buy her a cake. Too many calories anyway. I like her to remain the same size as she was when we were teenagers. Yeah baby. I’ll just lure her into my secret office to gander at your cake. Yummy! Thanks again. The benefits of reading your blog just never seem to end. What do they call it at McDonalds? The bottomless drink.
It’s been fun.
Happy trails.

Congrats on your one year blogiversary! And a cake sounds really good, but by the time it gets shipped to me, it will probably be a moldy mess, unless it’s already pumped full with preservatives such as benazygotatits.
But, anyway, congrats again! Quite a nice accomplishment to stick with it!

Jennifer — Thanks! They say the first year is always the hardest.
Curtis — Hey, fellow Tweeter! Thanks for always dropping in. I think we met up at Bloke’s place, right? He’s the perfect matchmaker.
Chelle — The cake was awesome, but I would never take credit for making it. Completely store bought, but tasted like I made it at home. Oh, wait. No. If it tasted like I made it at home, I’d be in the ER right now.
Comedy Plus — Good to see you. Thanks and I’m glad I found you on EC. Why’d I wait so long to join?
Shadowsrider — Whew! I know there’s a faction of people who absolutely swear off the sweet kind of icing. What do they know? Believe it or not, there is one last 2″ x 2″ corner piece left. Most of it is icing. It’s all yours!
Swubird — I’m so glad you joined the party! Please wish the Queen a happy birthday for me, will ya? Thank you, my friend, for your visits and witty comments. They always make me smile.
Jesster — Oh, man. I’ll pretend my cake was made with eggs and butter and nothing ending with -ites or -ates. Yeah, let’s say that. Thank you for dropping by!

Aniya — Don’t worry, you’ll get there. You’re already three months in, so that’s good. And if you’re like me, you won’t believe it when the time comes!
August 12th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Now I know what it’s like to show up at a party two weeks late! The best I can offer now is a belated “Happy Birthday,” and shove a couple of dollars in your fist while you tell me how delicious the cake that everyone else who showed up on time had the chance to taste, and how much fun everybody had playing “pin the tail on the tree-bag.” And I imagine everyone else got really cool goodie-bags with jacks or marbles or thesauruses or transformers or whatever kids get in those bags I never got at the birthday parties I’ve been to.
And it’s not like this date isn’t already burned into my brain. The Junk Drawer’s birthday is the same day as my parents’ anniversary, which is also the same day Prince Charles married Diana, which had to have been on your mind when you began writing this blog.
SO… a happy belated birthday to TJD. I’ve had a blast reading, and can’t wait to show up on time for your second birthday–on my parents’ 47th anniversary–to check on the bag in the tree and scarf down some cake.
Don’s last blog post..Lessons on “Making it Right”

Don — Don’t worry, latecomers still get party favors. Want a magnet? OK, so now you have no excuse if you miss the next birthday. I’m counting on you to be here first. About Diana, I actually remember the day she died, since it was on my human birthday. Thank you for the well-wishes and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the bag is still in the tree. Seriously. It ain’t movin’.
