My Vacuum Cleaner Sucks
Stuff I hate September 18th, 2008Boring post coming up. My apologies, but I’m desperate.
I don’t ask for much in this world. I just want my washing machine to clean clothes, my microwave to heat stuff, and my vacuum cleaner to suck up dirt.
It’s not sucking anymore.
At least not very well. We have a cheapo Red Devil vacuum that we’ve had for a couple years. The only benefit is that it’s very light, unlike my former Bissell vacuum that made me feel like I was pushing furniture around every time I cleaned.
But it fails to suck well enough and I want your recommendations on a new one. All it needs to do is adequately vacuum up kitty litter and not spit it back out through the sucky part.
And it needs to have its electrical cord coming out the top, not the bottom.
Look at this stupid thing. See where the cord comes out? Try vacuuming with that. It falls on the floor, I curse, I run over it, I curse, do the mambo trying to get at it, and I curse, all while trying to dodge kitty litter spraying out like shrapnel.
If you have an unhealthy love for your vacuum cleaner, I want to hear about it. Does it make you want to vacuum for the sake of vacuuming? Do you brag about it to your friends? Did you give it a name?
Bring it on. I need the exact make and model. Money is no object. It just has to have a cord that won’t trip and kill me, and it has to suck real good.
If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed!
Stumble it!

I most definitely have! Having tried a variety of cleaners over the years, I have found the best I’ve ever had! My whole family have bought one! It’s extremely lightweight and has a fantastic suction, extra long cord that comes out of the top! It sucks up cat litter and cat hairs! I can’t remember what it’s called though ha ha ha!

Okay kathy I swung by your blog on the off chance you had something new, and whaddaya know! Anyway, with three hairy dogs, I regularly use a Steam cleaner in concert with a Dyson vacuum, but Mrs C says there is a powerful Pink Dyson at Target to support breast cancer, Buy it now, and kill two birds with one stone! that’s advice direct from Mrs C, BTW.

I wouldn’t consider myself an authority, but because I have long haired dogs, maybe it puts me in a special category to talk about Vacuums. We pretty much go through one every coupla years
The best vaccum ever was my grandma’s pale blue Eureka with the aqua blue bag. That thing lasted for 50 gazillion years and sucked up anything. I am talking decades. I grew up with that thing. It was a pain because you have to change the bag. They have the retrovac now that is blue with a checkered bag that is supposed to be like it.
A friend of mine swears by Dyson. But her dog’s hair matches her carpet so it is less noticeable.
If the cord truly is the dealbreaker, i would just get a dustbuster

I DO love my vacuum cleaner, though I haven’t named her. She sucks real good, but it’s just a business relationship. She does a spectacular job and I recommend her without reservation. Her name:

Kathy, I had a vaccuum cleaner that I hated. I also have a dirty husband, three dirty sons, a filthy hairy dog and two hairy (not so filthy) cats plus a bird who spits feathers out it’s cage like there was a damned flock of chickens in there with him. Needless to say, I needed a big super duty sucker. I threatned to hire a cleaning service, I guess the dirty husband panicked and thought I was serious. Like most men, he HAD to have TOP of THE LINE. SO several days later, a giant box arrived at my house carried by my poor UPS guy who is bow-legged by now. There, in my living room sat a bright shiny super Dyson. The biggest sucker of them all. It was purple, pretty! Well, I plugged that baby in and tossed all those goofy tools in a corner and proceeded to begin sucking. Remember those hairy cats I told you about? Not so hairy anymore. In fact, it sucked those sheer curtains right off my windows and then headed toward the phone cord. There was plenty of cursing and screaming, “hey was that the bird?” I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with the kind people at Dyson and they told me how to reset the damned thing. Then I proceeded to vaccuum by sneaking up on things but never getting too close to them.
Moral of the story, if you want a hairless cat, and I know you’ve got them (cats I mean) then the Dyson (pretty purple) is a wonderful vaccuum plus they have nice customer service people so I have someone to talk to in the middle of the day while I try to rehang those stupid sheer curtains.

Kathy:
I’m afraid that I can’t offer any help on this point. Every vacuum cleaner I ever owned was a pain in the backside. The cord? Major problem. No suction? Major problem. Backbreaking heavy? Major problem. Spitting dirt and dust out the other end? Major problem. Filthy bags that spew dust everywhere when you try to empty them? Major problem. I guess what I am trying to say is that they all have major problems.
My Queen wants to get one of those little round robots and turn it loose in our house. Guess what? Battery life? Major problem.
If you happen to find a top secret vacuum cleaner that was accidentally left here by space aliens who had planned on sucking up the world – that is, before they crashed – then please, oh please, let me know. I mean, after all, even Area 51 has to be vacuumed once in a while.
Happy trails.

We had a vaccuum cleaner that stopped sucking too, was very sad. Vaccuuming is the only household chore I enjoy, just feels kind of satisfying to vaccuum after cleaning a room and I like that clean smell afterwards.
I don’t know that much about brands etc, but the one we have now doesn’t have a bag and has this little container on the outside that all the stuff is collected in. Very easy to empty (or to find something you’ve sucked up by accident)!

My wife and I never have had any luck with vacuums and HATED to use whatever crappy one we had at one time or another. Until…TADA!! We bought a Dyson. Okay, the cost is a joke, more than I spent on my first three cars (that isn’t a joke, by the way), but it has been well worth it. We actually both LOVE to vacuum now–it even does a great job on our hardwood floors. Good luck!

I know many people have already suggested a Dyson and I want to add my vote for this mighty vacuum cleaner. I love my Dyson. It handles the fur load of two dogs including one very big German Shepherd/Husky who during shedding season, which seems to last all year, drops enough hair in a week to make a whole new dog.

EVERYONE: Thanks for your recommendations! Way to pull through.
robert bourne — I’ve never used a bagless vacuum. It sounds weird to me. But if it does the job…
Babs beetle — When I read your first comment, I was like “But what’s it called????” I know the Orecks from the infomercials, but never knew anyone who had one. Thanks!
Chris — After reading all the comments, I think Dyson is coming out on top. And I can get a pink one??? I would love a cute pink vacuum! Thank Mrs. C for me, please.
HoundsGood — Man, they don’t make ‘em like they used to. Every time I buy one, it’s crappier than the last. Another vote for Dyson, I see.
Ferd — I think we used to have a Kenmore, but kept having to have it repaired at Sears. We probably bothered to repair it because it worked so well. Thanks for the specifics!
Donna — Hilarious story! Thanks for the chuckle. I’m envisioning everything in your house getting sucked up. If I get the Dyson, I’ll remember to read the manual first. One of my cats is very tiny. Don’t want her going for a ride!
Swubird — It used to be that all I hated to use was my carpet shampooer. Lately, I haven’t wanted to vacuum either, so my house is messier than normal. Yeah, I wouldn’t want to get a Roomba either. Those can’t possibly clean well enough, and certainly not on carpets. Thanks for the chuckles, I’m not supposed to be laughing this hard at 5:30 in the morning.
Jenny — Oreck is coming in a close second to Dyson. The Oreck guy seems very sincere when he tells me how well his product sucks. You gotta feel good about your vacuum, eh?
kouji — If you remember, come back and let me know.
chatblanc — That’s EXACTLY the kind of vacuum I want – the kind you’d marry!
Kelly — Looks like Dyson is the clear winner. I always wanted two, also. Hate lugging the stupid thing up and down the steps. But the cord comes out the top, right? It has to come out the top.
Erin — I love vacuuming, too (normally). Nice to see everything clean for ten minutes before the cats start coughing up stuff again and leaving fur balls everywhere. I’m intrigued by the bagless kind. Never had one of those.
Shadowsrider — It’s the cheapness of it, for sure. I don’t know that I paid even $100 for our Dirt Devil. You get what you pay for. Lint roller…funny!
Alan — OMG. Are you kidding? What a vision! Stand clear!
Karen — I can do without a retractable cord, but it has to come out the top. I hate that you can’t test the vacuums in the store. Maybe I wouldn’t have bought my Dirt Devil then. I did test pushing it around (it was nice and light), but then I discovered it didn’t suck.
Jeff — Thanks for letting me know that Consumer Reports gives the Dyson a thumbs up. I think that’s what I’m buying. And I’m excited to know I can get a pink one. Because you know I want to look cute when I clean!
Mike Foster — I’m prepared to spend a fortune if it means I won’t have to fight the beast. Thanks for the recommendation.
Riayn — Would you believe how excited I am right now to think about pushing around a Dyson? When I was at the animal ER this week with one of our cats, I watched a Husky dog shed about a pound of hair in one hour. His side of the waiting room looked like it was carpeted. Incredible.
September 19th, 2008 at 5:07 am
I used to by reasonably cheap vacuums but they all broke one me. This is particulary odd since I only vacuum every three months or so. I would be shocked if any of them had more than 50 hours on them.
I finally got fed up and bought a Dyson. I bought one because it seemed really geeky and cool and like it might even work.
I like. I now vacuum on an almost monthly basis and it does a great job picking up plant debris.
Of course now I want the cool one built on the ball, but I don’t think this thing is going to die anytime soon.

I had a Dyson way back and it was fantastic. Finally we had to get a new one, so went for Dyson again. It was rubbish and broke down within weeks. When we made inquiries we discovered they were no longer made by the same company and cheaper parts were used. I will never buy a Dyson again. £200 totally wasted.

You don’t need a new vacuum cleaner, you just need that one cleaned.
If you don’t have an air compressor, find a neighbor who does, and blow it out. There are a few little filters in there, and when they get clogged with dust, it severely dampens “the suck.”

Consumer Reports top rated upright is the Kenmore Progressive … and I’ve been using one for years. It works really, really well. They retail near $300, but Sears will run sales periodically. OK, I finally got up off my butt to see what kind of vacuum we have. It’s Bissell, and that’s all I can tell you. It has a bunch of labels: “TURBO!” “LIFT-OFF” “BRUSH!” but I don’t think those have anything to do with its name. It works fine, and Dave did a lot of research before choosing it, so there’s that.
Oh, and I named her Sucky.

Definately a Dyson! Our is the purple model specifically designed for picking up cat hair. It’s lightweight, easy to move around and does an excellent job. It’s not the cheapest one out there, but it is well made and well reviewed. I bought mine at Target.

I have a Bissell upright which I bought about 6 yrs ago for $50 at (dare I say it?) Walmart. It’s no hassle and it sucks real good, especially when I change bags frequently. I do have to clean the rollers of Tootsie’s hair occasionally, and I pour scented thingies in the bag to hide the Tootsie smell. The cord comes out the side somewhere near the bottom I think.

We got a Tri-Star but it’s not sold in stars. It does a great job of picking up litter and everything else–it even got a sock of mine that my husband rolled over! I was able to rescue it though without too much trouble. It’s a canister and very easy to empty. It’s light weight but kind of clunky for carrying up and down stairs, but then, any good one probably would be. It cost around $1,000 if I remember correctly.

It works okay, but it ain’t nothing special.

My mother STILL has the Kirby from around 1979 or so, and it still weighs about 100 pounds. My husband and I have 3 vacuum cleaners (from when we joined households) and the one without the bag is somewhat more satisfying than the other ones because when you pull out the canister to empty it, you can see what all you have vacuumed up. Even if you think your carpet is clean, there is still a bunch of dust in the canister. I think it’s a Bissell. And the cord comes out around the middle part.
September 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Kath, Look into a Roomba — no cords, no hands! Little robotic miracle. I love it. I actually killed my first one by overuse and stupidity. I’m on my 2nd in the house, got one for the RV and bought one for each of my kids. You just push start on the little sucker and off it goes. It can even play with the kitties…like a space alien trailing them. It’s a riot.
It doesn’t suck quite like one of big turbo booster jacked up machines, but does get the kitty litter, the cat hair and most other crumbly junk laying around on my floors. It has picked up paper clips and pennies (although not recommended). I still run the monster vac every week or so, but I let Roomba do his thing (yes, mine is a man since I get a kick out of seeing a ‘man’ vacuuming) a couple of times a week. The IRobot website even has reconditioned ones if you want to start inexpensively.

EVERYONE: Thanks for chiming in on the great vacuum debate. It seems like Dyson is the winner. I’m bummed that I spent $800 on vet visits this week, but that won’t stop me from buying a new expensive vacuum!
Elizabeth — I think I’m sold on the Dyson. I can’t wait to get a vacuum I love to use!
Cromely — Maybe they turn to crap from non-use? Like a car? I want a geeky vacuum too! And pink! Is there such a thing as Pink Geek?
Babs beetle — Oh no! One black mark for the Dyson! How can this be??? I’m sorry you didn’t love yours {sad face}
Neena — There’s another check in the Oreck column. I think I actually need to calculate the votes when this is all said and done.
Bucky — Yeah, but it never sucked quite right from the beginning. I’m thinking I just didn’t spend enough money. The Dirt Devil was only about $100.
Melissa Johnson — Ok! Ok! Ok! Is it reasonable to assume that ALL Dysons are good? Do you have a lot of dirt to vacuum? (Not that you have to reveal the condition of your carpets, just curious if I need a big one.)
Hilary — I do think we once had a Kenmore, the one whose motor kept breaking down. We took it to Sears to get it repaired twice, probably because it did the job. My husband is a big fan of Sears stuff, but I’m thinking of going with the Dyson. I’m the one who vacuums more, so I get to decide. Tee hee.
Kelly — That’s funny. I do the same thing. Are you ready for this? Wed. night I dreamt I was driving a stretch limo from the back seat. I remembered thinking how much easier it would have been had I driven it from the front. Anyway, I was wearing a T-shirt that had someone’s Entrecard logo on it. It’s not the first time I had a dream involving Entrecard, since I drop the max 300 cards every day. Anyway, you are not alone dreaming about blogs.
JD at I Do Things — Geez. Turbo? Liftoff? Is it a vacuum or the space shuttle? I hope Sucky sucks in a good way.
Kate — I would like a lighter one, too. You know, I loved my old house. It was a ranch home and vacuuming was a breeze. No dragging it upstairs! I miss that ‘ol house.
Ginni — I got sidetracked today searching on the Target site. There’s a store nearby, so we might take a drive and check ‘em out this weekend. I want a pink one, but I’d take purple if that’s all they had. I didn’t care about color until I read all these comments!
Marlene — I liked my old Bissell, except that it was so heavy to use, not to mention lug upstairs. I like your idea about throwing freshener in the bag to cover pet smells. You’re always thinkin’, sister!
windyridge — Sometimes I don’t trust Consumer Reports, which is why I asked for recommendations. Where do you even find Eurekas? Are they in regular stores or must you order online?
Karen — Holy cow! A thousand dollars?!? The last time I used a canister model was when I was still living at home. I remember it being unwieldy at times. I fight with my carpet shampooer like that, since it’s a canister-type deal.
Daisy the Curly Cat — My kitties hate the vacuum, too! So loud! Hurts their wittle ears!
Babs beetle — I love all these comments! I’m getting such good information here. Consumer Reports, take THAT!
Lee — Welcome back! I’ll head over to your blog this weekend. Got so busy this week. It’s a toss-up between Oreck and Dyson. They seem to be priced comparatively. I don’t think I can go wrong with either one.
Broadway Matron — OMG. Do you know how lucky you are? Cleaning must be a breeze. Good for you!
Jay — Hmmm. Never heard of the Nilfisk brand. It sounds expensive, too, if it’s meant for an allergy house. I know. Babs had me goin’. That stinker.
PaulsHealthBlog.com — OK, that’s two for The Boss (I love the names they give vacuums, don’t you?) Oh, wait. You’re not thrilled with it? Hmmm.
mlm — And I bet you’re going to tell me they don’t make Kirbys anymore. Why would they, if they’re going to last 30 years? Wow, impressive. I’m curious about these bagless ones. Somehow it seems harder to empty. Wouldn’t the stuff come flying out everywhere when you dump it?
Peg at Lehigh — I always figured those Roombas were inadequate for most households, but you are changing my mind. I’d still love to see one in action. Invite me over for a demo?
Regan — Oh, just wait. You’ll be caring about vacuums soon, when your mother starts making you help with the chores. Enjoy your freedom while it lasts.
KFJ — I hate to say it, but hairless cats are the freak show of the animal kingdom. I can’t imagine cuddling up with one of them. But, yeah, vacuuming would be so much easier. I still can’t believe a Roomba actually works. How long do you go before you have to empty it? Every couple of uses? It’s so tiny, isn’t it?
Geakz — If I can get my hands on a pink vacuum, it’s happening and you’ll hear about it! Yes, there is someone missing. I’ll let you take it up with him. I’m both intrigued and freaked out by your sixth comment. I’m not sure I can handle it. But, yeah, I needed an editor on the blog. Also added a random post widget and a comment counter, which BTW, I caught at 7,777 at one point today. Took a screen shot and everything. You know how I loves me my special numbers!
September 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
But if your vacuum sucks, isn’t that a good thing? You want one to suck more?
We have an Oreck, I’m not sure of anything besides that.
I just know we’re not ankle deep in dust bunnies, so I guess it’s ok. Have had it for a long time, so I doubt they even make the model any more.

It would be in your interest to note that unlike many bachelors out there, I am a proud owner on a yellow Dyson DC07 upright. I bought my Dyson a little over a year ago after my Dirt Devil decided to take the path to vacuum hell.
Furthermore, I was already talking with Kathy last night on Twitter, and was actually the first to point her to a DC07 in the Pink variation. This should explain my absence here in the comments section.
Now it is in my best interest to know why you have been missing in action on Twitter the last few days.
Nevertheless, it is comforting to know that I have been missed
Best Regards

OMGOSH…. today of all days to read this. I tried to vacuum today at work with vacuum from h*ll. It was a bissell. I must have bought a dozen vacuums since becoming an adult and having my own house hold. The last one I bought was a Hoover Widepath with wind tunnel technology. Definately the best by far! I got this one about 10 years ago. So far, knock wood, I have only had to replace the belt 2 times. That’s it! Good Luck. The only feature I would like would be a bagless dirt receptacle.

I have to say, I love my Dyson too. I’ve had a Dyson since the first year they came out, and have not had a better vacuum. I had a very expensive vacuum before the Dyson, and it was nothing compared to my fantastic bright colored Baby. I love to vacuum because of it, and so does my boyfriend. He said he never thought he could love a vacuum, but he definitely loves ours. I use it on every surface available, but is is pretty powerful, so every once in a while a cat two gets sucked up in it. Go for a Dyson, just like everyone said, it’s WORTH IT.

I am one of those strange women who doesn’t do the vacuuming in my house. It is one of the few chores my husband prefers to do so I happily hand it over to him (Hey, I do bathrooms, he can vacuum, I say) But he is very particular about his vacuum and when ours went caput a few months ago we got this Bissel (http://www.bissell.com/Products/p/cv+revolution/product.aspx) and he loves it, mostly because it is bagless and has the stair attachment. He hates doing stairs so this helps a lot he tells me (I am actually not allowed to touch the vacuum since he said I “broke” the one before. Why that matter since we got one he liked better is beyond me…and since I don’t like to vacuum this arrangement is fine with me)
Hope this helps.

I would just like to give a shout-out to Hoover. I don’t know how good their vacuums are today, but my upright Hoover vacuum cleaner is 14 1/2 years old, I have 2 cats and a dog, and it still sucks pretty good! I’ve never replaced a thing on it, it’s amazing!

This is so funny – I have had a love hate relationship with vacuums for years. I bought a vacuum cleaner about a year ago. I had it for 3 Days and my son (7) wanted to vaccuum, I thought, what a great kid and said, “sure you can” WELL, within 60 seconds he had sucked the cord up – my new vaccuum was ruined, didn’t work at all, the plastic on the cord was melted and the wires were sticking through it. My husband fixed this by splicing the wires together and putting electrical tape around it. But, every time the cord got in the way (I was always stepping on it) it would pull apart again and my husband would fix it again (x20). After a year of this that same son was vaccuming his room and vaccumed up a sock that got stuck in the hose and would not come out, I FINALLY got a new vaccum, why didn’t I think of that earlier? My requirements for a vaccum were, upright, at least 12 amps, and light.

What a great idea for a post! I myself need an inexpensive electric carpet sweeper. My apt. is too tiny for a vacuum, no storage. To date I have had to return one because it just pushed the crap around the floor. Frustrating. If you get a good recommendation please let ME know. I use a manual carpet rake I saw on tv. It’s good for muscle building

Right now our orange Kenmore really sucks. And not in a good way. The cord won’t suck back in, and dirt falls back out the “sucky part” when we shut it off. And it makes that awful smell if you run it too long.
I will be getting a central vac installed in our house this spring coming up. My wife’s friends all have one, and they swear by them. It is basically an industrial sized shop vac, hidden away with only the plug in openings to attach cords to sticking out of the wall. Our house is too small to install this monstrous unit inside, so we will be attaching it outside the house in its own tiny addition on the back side. I have never heard of anyone having any troubles whatsoever with these bad boys. They are the cadillac of vacuums, and the unit itself only costs $400 to $600 Canadian. Of course, I have to install it. I built the rest of the house, so I can probably get it done in a weekend since I know where everything is and made a little diagram already. This is a good option if you own your house, and almost all new houses built up here in the last 15 years have these as a standard item.

Coming late to the suckilicious party, but I have to tell you my Oreck has nearly changed my mind about vacuuming. I don’t ever expect to love it, but when I do break down and wisp the lithe little thing out and let her do serious suckage, I think, “Wow, this is not nearly as bad as I thought it was.” The cord is long, and does not even try to get in the way. She also came with three prizes: 1) car vac, 2) canister vac and 3) not bad iron. If I named her, it would be, “Honey, Could You Pass The” Oreck.

Joe — The suck is good, it’s the spitting it back out part that’s bad. I want a vacuum that’ll last me years and years. This dumb Dirt Devil didn’t make it two I don’t think.
Athena — I can’t believe what happened to you at the Kirby place. Is that even legal? Let’s you and me go buy ourselves a Dyson. I’m convinced it’s what I want.
Jaffer — Thank you for coming back to restore our faith in you as a regular commenter. If you’re late the next time, that’s it, you’re fired.
Christina thecoffeelady — Bissell goes on my Sucks in a Bad Way list. I’m amazed a vacuum can last 10 years or more. Of course, I could buy the $700 Oreck that comes with a 21-year warranty.
Vicki — If you can get a man to love vacuuming, I’m sold! Sorry about the cats. That’ll teach ‘em to get too close!
Vegas Princess — Dave and I have similar arrangements for cleaning certain things. He rarely vacuums or dusts or wipes down kitchen surfaces, but he does the bulk of the laundry and cleans the bathrooms. Works for me. I’m glad you found the perfect vacuum.
Carole — Holy cow! 14 years? The only appliances I’ve had that worked that long are my washer/dryer and fridge. But I do admit every time I hear a strange noise from them, I panic.
Shiela Sultani — Oh, that’s terrible! I think maybe your son needs to be quarantined whenever you vacuum. God bless your husband. Sounds like quite the handyman.
Lauren — My parents have one of those carpet sweeper things for their apartment. It’s mostly OK for their needs, as they have no pets and they’re not slobs. But, yeah, sometimes you need some good suckage now and then.
Military Wife — I’m going with a Dyson, but will have to make sure I get it on sale. I never thought a vacuum could cost more than maybe $300. Dyson has models up to $600, but it sure sounds like they’re worth it.
Bella Casa — Boy, your house must be spotless. I might consider a Roomba if for no other reason than to see how my cats would react. They do love their toy remote mousy. p.s. I don’t find the stuff you find at garage sales. Wow.
Tim — My sister has a central vac, too. She hasn’t replied here yet, I think because she pities us. I know she raves about it. I’m impressed you can install one yourself. Sounds like an impossible task to me. But this is coming from a woman who thinks she’s something for installing a new doorknob once. Good luck! p.s. Congrats to JD for earning a Redneck Gift Basket. I know she’ll just love the cherries. JD is one of my favoritest bloggers. She’s highly deserving!
Elle — This was a suckilicious party, wasn’t it? I love that you love your Oreck! And any good, loyal vacuum deserves an honorable name. Suck on!
Babs beetle — Now I’m on the fence about Oreck. I didn’t consider Dyson and Oreck would go head to head. What to do, what to do!?
September 20th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
I am the proud owner of a central vac. It came with the house when we moved in 15 years ago. It’s lovely only having to drag around the hose, which inserts in several strategic places throughout the house. The downside to it (yes, there’s always a downside for me), is the monthly emptying of the canister. EWWWW.
Picture it…..I place a disposal gown over my oldest clothes, remove my contacts, put on rubber gloves, and proceed to dump out scads of sucked up debris that is about 99% cat fur. Then, I have to reach up into the nether region to scoop out whatever grossness is still holding on for dear life. A hot shower immediately follows. Aside from that, I love my central vac.

I have to say, I LOVE my Dyson. It’s wicked expensive, but it’s the first vacuum that’s lasted me more than a year. Highly recommended!

(Laughing) I’m going to have to try the mambo. I haven’t any good advice for you on vacuum cleaners. Last Christmas my mother gave me a Dirt Devil and I felt like a kid with a new bike. I always wanted one and I was so excited. Little did I know a cobra was living inside. Every vacuum cleaner I’ve ever owned has tried to kill me with the cord. It’s just when I’m about to finish vacuuming, when I realize I’ve wrapped myself into a corner- And I know what you mean about the spit up thing- how rude is that? However, it does suck up kitty litter pretty good at first, but only within the first few minutes of vacuuming. But that’s because it only works for about fifteen minutes. I heard that Dyson makes a good vacuum cleaner from the man himself on the Today Show. So now I’m dreaming of a Dyson. Happy hunting and good luck.

Cheers~

ann of the cellphone bag — On one hand, I love the idea, on the other, can you picture me cleaning that thing out? I’d rather buy five vacs and leave them standing near where dirt collects. That is how lazy I am.
Christy — First, thanks for the award! Kathy so happy! About the Dyson, I’m a little nervous now since Babs warned me about the one she bought. I suppose I have to go over the warranty with a fine-toothed comb.
brooke — Oops!Sorry!
Single Guy Money — While I don’t chuck it out the door, I do use it a lot less than I want to. I used to have such a clean house, but there’s hope. With a Dyson or Oreck, I can see vacuuming a few times a week.
Mandy Harvey — I may be a member of the Dyson Club before long.
Chris — And you might even get video. Me dancing in my living room with my pink Dyson!
robin — Oh, that’s rich. I’ve had my share of frustration with bags. I never save the last one and so I don’t know the number I need. I’ve bought the wrong ones more than once.
Annie — Honestly, I wouldn’t mind SO much if not for that darn cord! I cannot understand why they’d make it come out on the bottom. There’s a clippy thing at the top, but it doesn’t hold it up. Why not just put it there?!?! Also, mine starts to smell like something’s burning after only five minutes. I’m long overdue!
Mike — I guess I was asking for that, wasn’t I?

Eurekas are everywhere, Walmart, online etc. How can you not trust CU? They are really objective. What am I missing? I bought an expensive Oreck years ago. Never again. I had a vacuum fixer tell me the very expensive ones aren’t much better than the $100 models. The oreck is clacking and spitting up at the cabin. I already had the motor replaced once and the handle is breaking off.

I tried several brands of vacuums and I learned that you have to have some luck. With more expensive models (like Dyson) I expected more, but got less. On the other hand, a cheap Bissell surprised me and it is still in my closet, ready for work. I guess you just have to pick something that worked for you before. That never fails.

I’ve been called a vac snob (thanks, Heather ;D) and I have personally tried a Dyson that a friend of mine had. She kept raving about it, so I gave it a try one day while we were visiting. Eeech…I hated it. All of the attachments felt so cheap to me, not to mention the vacuum itself. If I had never used my vacuum, I probably would have been impressed with it, but I absolutely L-O-V-E my girl. I have a Windsor Flexamatic http://www.windsorind.com/products/index.php?id=1.012-003.0, which is a commercial vacuum, but I think the Sebo Felix is relatively the same thing, for the home market. The Flex is just more heavy duty and less expensive…go figure. I think it’s because the Sebo’s are a little more attractive… http://www.sebo-vacuums.com/
I’ve had Flexamina (my pet name for her) for over 5 years, and she truly does NEVER lose suction. When she starts slowing down a little, I just change her bag, and she runs like brand new again. And I use her nearly every day.
Another great feature is the new attachment they just came out with… a high-speed burnisher head that goes right on the vacuum. WONDERFUL for those who also have wood floors. You can polish your wood floors, without buying another piece of equipment!
Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose!
October 19th, 2008 at 7:48 am
Jessie — Thanks for the feedback. We still haven’t bought one yet because we had an $800 vet bill shortly after I was seeking recommendations. Too bad about the Dyson. I do want to get a good feel for one before buying it. I know what you mean about the cheap feel. That’ not a good sign. I love the windsor model. It’s so pretty! (And isn’t that what you want in a vacuum?) Flexamina?! Beautiful name! I can tell how in love you are with it, esp. if you use it every day. Funny!
December 15th, 2008 at 1:38 am
Well, that vacuum does indeed suck. Or actually it does not suck, and that’s the problem.
Anyway, I recommend the Dyson Animal line of vacuums. They are a bit more expensive, but do a great job – since you have a cat.

I like my Dirt Devil rechargeable broom vacuum. Cordless feature is nice and the battery lasts a long time. When sweeping pet hair I have to clear the filter often otherwise the motor seems to suffocate. I have used other types of stick vacuums and actually prefer this one. My opinion is if you’re going to spend $25-50 on something like this – go for it. All-in-all using the Dirt Devil broom vac is much better than the traditional broom and dust pan.
January 18th, 2009 at 6:24 am
Evermis — That’s interesting. I always think those less-expensive sucky things don’t do a decent enough job. I could really use that in my kitchen. Between the bits of dried up cat food and cat hair, I’m tired of crawling around with a damp paper towel.
February 1st, 2009 at 8:01 am
I suppose you could place me in the Dyson hating category. I was so excited when my vacuum died..at least I thought I was. I was so excited that I was able to talk my husband into buying me one of these beautiful little machines, and when he arrived home with that great big box, I almost knocked him over before he could get in the door. Well, quite honestly, I was quite disappointed when we took it out of the box. I thought it had an extremely cheap look and feel to it, and it was awkwardly huge. I felt like I was pushing a couch around the house. Okay…exaggeration…it felt like I was pushing a love seat around.
To make a long story short, hubby took my old vacuum to a repair shop, and after a $30 repair, it was like brand new. Thank goodness! Between pushing that monster around and having to lift up all the furniture to be able to vacuum underneath it (a beloved feature of my current vacuum–it lays almost flat to get under things) I was beginning to look like Gorgeous George.
My personal recommendation would be to do a quick Google for the words vacuum store and the name of your city or zip code. There’s usually at least one in every city and they sell all kinds of great vacuums and the best part is that they’ll let you try out all of them personally before buying one. Most of the vacuum stores I’ve seen, not too many but still, have a demo area set up with some various flooring types. You choose the models you want to try, throw some dirt on the floor, and go to town.
And in response to the last post, I’ve never tried one of the broom vacs, but have not seen good reviews on them. But if you’re looking for something similar, I would highly recommend the Swiffer Sweep & Vac (the one with the vac, not just the little swiffer head). You plug it in, charge it up and the vacuum picks up things as large as a piece of cereal, and the swiffer cloth behind it picks up the tiniest particles the vac may miss. For the price, I have been quite impressed with it’s performance. The only downfall is that it does need relatively frequent replacement. I have gone thru one about every 6 months, but with a coupon (and there are frequent coupons for them) it’s usually only about $20. Hope this has helped a bit, and good luck!
February 19th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
You’ll have to shell out a chunk if you purchase a new one. There are stores that offer vacuum cleaner parts. If it’s not sucking anymore, something might just be blocking the hose.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
If you’ve got the money to spend I agree a Dyson is well worth it. On the opposite side I’ve had a Hoover Tempo for quite a while now that I’d recommend. They are under $100.

Having carpet flooring is great for kids however they can get very dirty very fast. Due to kids, pets, and everyday life it is necessary to have a vacuum that works wonders because we need to ensure that our family is not living in dirt.
August 12th, 2009 at 11:56 am
One of the advantages of buying kit homes that vendors usually fail to mention is that the owners get plenty of opportunity to customise the flooring. Floor coverings are not part of the basic package usually, but there’s a good reason. Everyone has different tastes in floor coverings and one reason is that various styles require more or less upkeep. I personally dislike vacuuming so avoid carpet. Carpet never really feels clean to me after people walk on it and it’s the perfect dust collector. And the possibility of dealing with a bad vacuum cleaner that seems to have a menacing life all its own is just another reason to have tile and wood floors. Tile and wood flooring options are very easy to care for and only require some regular sweeping and periodic cleaning with a wet or polish mop. Area rugs were created just for people like me! But if you do decide to install carpeting in the house and have to buy a vacuum then be careful to consider vacuum cleaner features. One is the location of the cord, of course, but you need to also consider the amount of suction; if it has the more durable metal parts rather than plastic components; whether you want a bag or a bagless model; and the accessories it includes. In addition some vacuums are designed today to be convertible in order to clean carpet, wood and tile floors. Of course with that particular style you are faced with the problem of possibly getting stuck with a bad vacuum cleaner. All I can say is my mop never tries to trip me with a cord!
