Where Do You Blog?
Blogging September 2nd, 2008Until the first snowflake falls, this is where I’ll be blogging:
I love sitting out on my patio, enjoying the morning or evening air. The stillness, the peace, the tranquility. It’s the one space I where I can get far from the ear-splitting, earth-shaking tremors brought on by the theater-quality audio system my husband bought to accompany our HDTV.
The audio system that has my cats hearing things that aren’t really in the room and now they need therapy.
The audio system that requires its own stupid remote control.
The audio system that is the size of a microwave and needs its own stabilizing table.
The audio system so sensitive that when I moved one of its speakers to dust, it gave my husband a coronary and prompted a lecture that every time I move one of them — so much as an inch — the whole system needs to be recalibrated and don’t you understand hi-tech audio, woman?
Um. No?
I don’t know what I’m going to do in winter. Earmuffs? Cone of silence? Move?
I’m curious where you guys blog. Drop your comments in the drawer — quietly.
Stumble it!

I think the answer is to wear a really skimpy French maid outfit when you dust, and then your husband won’t really mind whether you move his speakers one inch or whether you actually pick them up completely to shoulder height and lob them out into the yard.
Or has he become immune to your charms? I’m trying to imagine that circumstance.
No, too far fetched.

I blog at a desktop computer that is in what is supposed to be a breakfast nook, but what I’ve turned into my office. I look out the window in front of me and see two mature maple trees. There’s a window to the right, where I look out at my neighbor’s house.

Hmm, I don’t blog. But I comment on my couch! Don’t worry, we have about 5 remotes in our basement, and a lot of buttons. Sometimes I push the wrong set of buttons and the TV makes this really loud static-y sounds and it scares me and then dad tells me how easy it is and I feel dumb.

I blog in the lounge, the same room as our HDTV and surround system! I am quite used to noise, although sometimes at those crescendo moments in the movie, I have been known to say “That’s loud!” Mo very kindly turns it down :O)
We don’t have the ’speaker’ problem, our system consists of one center speaker. It has twenty six small speakers and two bass speakers in a single cabinet! You calibrate it with the remote.

I sit at a desk with a good old Dell PC with a large old time 19″ monitor and listen to the TV Ten feet to my left. I’d love to say that before me is a huge plate glass window that over looks a placid lake with ducks and geese floating lazily on by.
But in reality right in front of me is a wall hung shelving unit with a ton of software, CD’s, floppies, pencils, books and stuff. To the left of that is a nice window over looking Our Neighbor’s yard, which is bad need of Landscaping.

brooke — So you have cat hearing?
Joe — I can’t blog and watch TV (unless I’m dropping EC cards, and even then I get distracted).
Richard Catto — It’s too far-fetched because I can’t fit into anything skimpy.
Libertine — I used to blog in an upstairs office, but much prefer a natural view as you do. Clears my head a bit.
Regan — I’ve been instructed to press only three buttons on the audio system remote. Up, down, or mute. I’m afraid to touch the others. God help me if I sit on it by mistake.
Babette — I used to do that too, but the cats bother me there.
Kelly — My patio-blogging scenario is not without its mosquito bites. Keep forgetting to cover up.
Alan — Hey! Where were you when I went to Toronto? We should have met!
chatblanc — I only have a cat problem when I’m blogging from the kitchen table. Usually it’s a butt in my face. Dave researched the audio system for months beforehand and I knew it. I was afraid of its arrival, for good reason.
Christy — I’ll never understand how parents blog at all. Honestly, how do you think while dodging Cheerio missiles?
kouji — While watching TV? That seems popular and I’m jealous because I can’t multi-task.
janeywan — The glare can be a problem, and the hot sun. Working on getting drop shades installed out back.
SmallWorldReads — That’s nuts. I’m in awe because I need almost perfect quiet. We’re thinking of enclosing our patio so I can have the best of both worlds. Quiet and protection from the elements.
Matt — That I might be able to do, considering I don’t know anything about sports, so it’s not like I’d have to think about it while trying to write.
Babs beetle — Those crescendo moments are usually what sends me fleeing to the back yard. Your system sounds more insane than ours!
Tiffany — If I ever blog from the bathroom, shoot me. I do think about getting a Bose noise-blocking headset. Kind of expensive. Maybe for Christmas.
Maureen — You and your water issues. All I can do while the TV is on is surf, where I don’t have to think too hard. But if I’m writing, I can’t have noise. I’ve never been able to filter it out.
Jeff — I expected nothing less from a project manager! Way to be efficient!
Curtis — Two busiest places in the house! Couldn’t do it.
Jaffer — I love to people-watch, so a cafe or library probably wouldn’t cut it for me. But I’d like to. It sounds like a nice change of pace.
Christine Bean — Having a beautiful view is helpful, isn’t it? When I worked inside on the desktop, I found myself staring at the screen a lot. At least outside I have nature.
Beamer — That’s exactly the view I have when I work at my desktop, which is why I don’t write there much anymore. But in the winter, I guess I won’t have a choice. Unless I start blogging in a parka.
Luxor — I’m sure she just loves when you help!
Daniel — And why not? Sounds like Jeff would!
julia — Thanks so much for the award! I’m feelin’ the love!
Monique — Wow! Old school! I’ve occasionally written down ideas on paper (or emailed them to myself), but never wrote a whole post that way. Lazy me.
Jay — Dave got to blast it to his heart’s content while I was away a few days in Canada. The cats were probably happy when I came home, since that put an end to the ear-splitting noise. Someone should make a blogger’s chair that has a big pulldown tray with built-in outlets.
Dori — I expect in winter, I’ll be at the kitchen table. At least in the kitchen, I’ll still have a view.
Ricardo Bueno — I have to say, the system is amazing when it’s not ripping my face off. Takes the HD experience to a whole new level.

Kathy, When I’m out on my deck, I light the Tiki torches, that seems to keep the bugs away, but twice in the last two mights I’ve had the pleasure, if you want to call it that,of watching a Moth fly into the flame and incinerate itself.
As for blogging on the deck until it snows, why not get a portable propane heater, leave the Umbrella out, and turn that baby up to incinerate to blog out there in the Snow? Just wondering? We have a chiminea, and after my adventures with lumberjacking, we’ve got plenty of kindling for those chilly fall Sunday adternoon/evenings!

You’re lucky. There’s this one remote where you have to push buttons so the TV knows what you’re trying to control, like the sound box thing, the DVD player, the TV, and so on. It made static noises because I forgot to press the TV control-button, then pressed the button I was supposed to press. But it doesn’t work if you don’t push the TV button first.

I blog in our spare bedroom that we made into a music room (we call it that just because it’s where I put the piano and our cassette tapes). Since I’ve got the computer, I now call it my computer room. I have a PC emachine and my husband has mentioned several times he’s going to get me a laptop so he can have some time on the computer. I tell him to just let me know when he wants to come on and I’ll let him, but he doesn’t like to chase me off–nice of him, isn’t it?

I tend to blog at work, on my lunch hour. Or sometimes not on my lunch hour. But I feel guilty when I do that. I tend to compose blog posts in my head while I’m driving; playing with a turn of phrase passes the time on long trips. I carry a little notebook in my purse and jot ideas or impressions that come to me in my travels so I don’t forget them. If I can only remember to bring my CAMERA on these trips!
Ah, the sound system. I see them all the time. All I have to do is wave my pen in the general direction of the speakers and the customer usually says “Oh, I will pack those. I will move those. You won’t touch those. My precioussssss….”

Ha! A blogger’s chair is a great idea Kathy!!! You’d better patent it; it would have to have an extra thick padding for long sessions, a place for a Starbucks, a portable power supply and lamp, and enough room for my cats to perch their butts instead of on top of my laptop while I’m trying to write.
Thank ye.

I’d be sooo blogging in front of that stereo. That sounds cool!
But as it is, I have no cool stereo, no lap top, no porch from which to look out on a beautiful view (just neighbors, and sorry to say, they’re no fun). I usually blog from my “home office” (aka spare bedroom, place we dump things we don’t know what else to do with them), which has a window…but again, looks out on the side of a neighbor’s house. Bucky — Getting a laptop changed blogging for me. I used to only write posts and comment when I had just the desktop. Now I can do other duties as assigned. The freedom!
Chris — I’m more worried about the squirrels. As for the outdoor heater, don’t laugh. I wouldn’t put it past me.
Regan — I try to stick with only the TV remote. I haven’t touched the DVD one in months. I make Uncle Dave set it up for me. He keeps trying to teach me, but I keep not paying attention.
windyridge — It’s nice to blog on-the-go!
Karen — My husband was exactly the same way. Never chased me off the desktop, but I felt bad for him, never getting any time on it. Treated myself to a laptop for Christmas last year. Do we see one in your future?
A. — Everyone should have a nest. I’m in awe of people who blog in the busiest/nosiest place in their houses. Can’t do it.
muskrat — That sounds like the perfect scenario!
Shieldmaiden96 — I stopped trying to blog (or answer comments) at lunch. Too many distractions. Like you, ideas come to me while driving. If I can’t find a pen, I call myself on the phone and leave a message. As for the camera, I keep my old one with me in my tote and my new one at home. I had no idea speakers really weren’t just speakers. I’m never touching them again.
Maureen — OK, so which one of us is going to work on that? It’s really a brilliant idea. My sister works on her laptop on a chaise and keeps all her necessities (drinks, phone, etc) on a table to the side. It really needs to be built into one massive chair. The Blogger’s Chair!
JD at I Do Things — What I need is a second AC adapter to keep near the bed so I don’t have to drag the one I have up and down stairs. Anyone wondering what to get me for Christmas, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Just sayin’.
Singular Girl — Yeah, but at least you’re not getting sand in your computer. I know, I know. You wouldn’t mind if it meant you were sunning yourself somewhere nice. Sorry.
Lauren — Thankfully, my husband is careful to only blast out my ears and all six of my cats’. The neighbors have it easy. We’ll be deaf by winter.
Lisa — Funny! It’s tempting to blog at work. The most I’ll do is email myself an idea or drop EC cards at lunch. Anything else requires too much thought and I can’t think anywhere other than my patio, apparently. Seriously, I don’t know what I’m going to do in winter.
lizzyt — If it makes you feel any better, my view is not perfect. I get stared at by at least five people every night. “What’s that woman doing over there? They look at me like they never saw a laptop before.
Sugee — Don’t worry. That was me for the first six months of blogging. After the laptop, it all changed. I say start dropping hints NOW.
Jenn — Oh, man. So close, yet so far! Don’t even start me on online fixes. I almost checked myself into a hospital when my ISP was down for two whole days on the weekend. Crossing my fingers DHL pulls through for you soon.
darla — It’s not too bad this time of night (6:00-9:00 is perfect). Can’t do it in blazing sun, though. When I need A/C, I blog from the couch. BTW, when exactly is it going to stop being 90 degrees? I’ve had enough.
Geakz — OK, I’m totally getting a fake spill glass. Except that Dave’s been reading these comments since yesterday, so honey, can you play along with me when I try to fool you? Sorry for Stinky Woman (and idiot flip-flop wearer from your Tweets today. There’s one guy near my office who cannot pick up his feet when he wears them. One of these days he’s not going to have any feet. Just bloody stumps).
LOL cats — You’re lucky you can blog at work. The only thing worse than being too busy at work is being too bored. Good for you.
Fancy — Sounds cozy and QUIET!
cardiogirl — I always wonder how you knock out such great posts with children. Frankly, I don’t know how any parent bloggers with small children do it. Girl, you’re doing something right.
Lee — Now you’ve done it. I shall always read your posts imagining that such inspiration came while you were in your skivvies. Laptops make blogging infinitely easier, no doubt.
unfinishedrambler — I say put up your own light show in the window you look out of. Keep it up all year. Your blog posts will always sparkle!
Jay — OK, so you, me and Maureen are sharing the patent on that one, right?
brooke — And he probably says “When you’re older and you have your own TV, you can turn it up as loud as you want.” That’s a classic Dad response.
Joe — I agree. Nobody wants to see a 90-yr-old anything without a shirt on. Sorry. That’s gotta kill your inspiration, eh? p.s. Monk lover here too!
Natural — Ah, but I know one place you can’t blog — your sister’s! I remember the post you wrote about your ISP being down and not being able to write quite right (say that 3x fast) outside of your home base. Still gives me a chuckle.
mommyto2 — If my husband blogged, he’d be able to do it in the middle of anything. I hate that he can still focus amidst chaos and I can’t.
Tiffany — Touche! You know, I should. Someone once let me try on his Bose headphones. They’re incredible. He said you have to be careful because you can freak out a little when you can’t hear a single thing except your own heartbeat.

Hello. What a nice question after a long day of not spending time on my blog or entrecard today. I normally blog right on my couch after a long day of work. If I get too busy, I normally blog at work, in the morning. Today, I started my blog at 7:30 am, and just couldn’t get back to it. Sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day to work, be a wife, mom, and a blogger!

The bedroom is just close by so that whenever my baby cries, i can easily hear her and get her. i try to blog as much as I can but i guess, there is just too little time to do everything in between audio transcriptions and nappy changes!

In my “office” which is also TG’s “office” which is actually a sunroom we use for this purpose … but it is just steps from our TV room ergo is very noisy when everyone is home … I hate it … I want a soundproof room where I can blog and write and just generally do a Greta Garbo … i.e. “I vahnt to be alone …” … but I understand the folks in the bad place want a drink of water, too. What’re you going to do after the first snowflake falls, Kathy?

Kimmy — I’m amazed parent bloggers have time for all the bloggy stuff we do. I tip my hat to you!
kikamz — Sounds like you have the perfect nook spaces. I have a little stool next to the couch that holds all my accessories (it doubles as a step for my elderly kitty to get on the couch. Soon that’s what I’ll be using it for).
DJ — The laptop makes things so much easier, doesn’t it? It’s come to be like paper and pen.
Jenny — I want my outdoor patio enclosed some day. Then I can still blog with my view and not freeze to death.
Mik — I’m one of the few people with a covered patio, so I can be out there in almost any kind of weather. Except freezing!
Thea Westra — OMG. You have the cleanest work space I’ve ever seen. And even a place to hang a headset? That’s brilliant. Mine sits in a big blob and gets caught up in everything.
Your Pal Pinki — If you blog outside, remember to cover up or the bugs will get you eventually.
Mike Foster — Well, the couch is usually more comfortable. And bug-free!
September 4th, 2008 at 6:06 am
I blog in our living room most of the time and If I need to watch my kids, I transfer in our lounge while watching TV and them lol! Aren’t you not freezing blogging in your patio. I don’t like noisy sound either..That will give me headache..

I’m adding a link to your site on my blog. It’s great fun!

I do most of my writing from my front porch so I can watch the world pass by while I’m lost in my thoughts or ideas. I am both a writer and a blogger, so it goes for both.
I loved your blog by the way!

September 4th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
That looks peaceful. I like blogging out on my porch in the morning, but by the time the sun creeps around it gets too hot. Must get patio umbrella. Most of the time I just write sitting in my living room in front of the tv…but that gets distracting.

Richard Catto’s last blog post..What did I do with my Google Chrome today?
September 4th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Jay — Not freezing now, but I’m sure eventually I’ll have to move indoors, probably to the bedroom which is the furthest point from the living room noise. That, or I’ll build a shed in the yard and heat it.
Sherry Martschink — Oh you can’t just say you were on Family Feud twice and not give me details!!!! Please tell us more! And thank you for dropping by. I’m glad you find it fun here! The community is great and you’ll meet lots of entertaining folks in the Drawer.
Nicole — To get out of the direct sun, my husband suggests I blog on the front porch. But it’s narrow and I can’t squeeze a decent sized table out there. Besides, I’ll have even more neighbors staring at me. Somehow the laptop makes me look like the CIA or something.
Babs beetle — Then we need to hold a bake sale. Babs need a laptop!
Barandom — I have the 1501. Very disappointed with the battery life, though. I need to buy a new one and it’s not even a year old. Poo!
Acorn King — Yes, the sun is deadly hot. I need to get some shades to put up on one side of the porch. That’ll make it bearable, plus no one will stare at me anymore.
Mike — It’s my sanity at risk here. I am thinking of getting a Bose noise-deafening headset. I don’t care how I look in them either. Princess Lea, Minnie Mouse? If I can have peace, so be it!
Lee — Thanks, buddy. I’m honored to receive a gift from you. Hope by now your ant bites are all healed. Poor Lee!
Richard Catto — Think again. My husband would only laugh at me. But that’s OK, I wouldn’t be able to hear it anyway.
September 4th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I hate to admit it, but I blog at work. I don’t have time to do it at home, because I have too many projects going on there. I do as little at my office as possible, which leaves more time for important stuff, like blogging and shopping on ebay.

I blog whenever and wherever I have opportunity. It can be at 3 AM. It might be at the office. Usually it is at home on the kitchen island, where I can also watch the TV in the den at the same time. But first, I have to have an idea. I only get ideas once in a long while. Otherwise, there’s just dead air up there! : (

It’s the most comfortable place in the house. (Don’t worry, the bed is always made and I am always fully clothed.)
I also like to be out on the deck, too, or on the couch in the living room. I recently tried to sit at desk, but it just didn’t feel right.

Bruce — You and millions of others, I’m sure. Tell me again what we did without the internet?
MommyWizdom — What a tiny workspace you have! That’s blogging dedication. Praying you don’t have a sauce pan spillover. Hope you have complete care on your laptop!
Chris — I’ve heard that some writers build small sheds, almost like doll houses, where they do all their writing. I want that! Minus the bugs, of course.
sue — Seriously, I don’t know how you do it. I suppose when you’re a parent, you develop a shut off valve?
Shadowsrider — You know, when I was traveling in Canada recently, I considered trying to blog from the hotel room, but it felt too weird. I guess I really need my special space at home for that. Good for you!
Ferd — On very rare occasions, I’ve been able to knock something out in a spot away from home. But I’ve had to be very inspired. It’s like when I was in college. I had one study space and no other would do. I’m with you on the dead air thing. Happening right now. Not sure if I can muster a new post til the weekend.
Jennifer — I feel less comfortable blogging in bed than anywhere else, although I’ve done it. I prefer having my laptop on a flat surface. My legs are a little too lumpy! Yes, this was a popular topic! Maybe I should hand out a prize to the 100th commenter?
maggie — Awesome! I’m a single-task girl. I can’t, say, watch TV and blog at the same time. I don’t know why. It just is.

I don’t blog, but I enjoy commenting on them from my living room, surrounded by all my creature comforts: side table for drinks, snacks, remotes, and phones, lounger positioned toward patio glass doors for optimal viewing of the OUTSIDE, while basking in the climate controlled environment that is my home.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Babs — We’re almost there! Although you might have noticed since I switched themes, my comment numbers are a bit screwy when viewed as a list. I’ll fix that eventually. 100, here we come!
Joe — I’ve reached 100 only one or two other times. One of them was for my blog’s birthday, which seemed to bring everyone out of the woodwork. There was cake, so I’m guessing that’s why.
Alda — Come back tomorrow and maybe you can be 100! Those are very popular blogging spots. Hope they’re comfy for you!
shannon — Oh, please save up for a laptop. You’re entire blogging experience will change for the better!
ann of the shampoo bag — You have quite the setup there. All you have to do now is train your cats to fetch drinks for you out of the fridge. Why not? Dogs do it.

That’s an ideal place to blog and am searching for a similar place. I am planning to spend my summer in some cool place. Perhaps a perfect mountain village is an ideal place to blog for me. I am tired of that covered area where I have been living in these days.

September 7th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
eurail pass — Yes, but is there wireless access in a mountain village? It’s funny how when I travel, my lodging decision is based entirely on whether there’s wireless access.
Elle — I could blog in my sitting room or dining room, but neither has comfortable enough furniture. I bet your armoire is beautiful! Always wanted one.
Carla — Ooo! A lake view! Yes, it’s tough to work on the laptop in the sun. There’s a period of time I can’t do it, say 5-7PM. But after that, it’s quite nice and easy to see the screen.
Babs beetle — Darnit! Maybe next time (if there is a next time).
recel — Wow, another mom who can blog with distractions. I’m in total awe of you. I wouldn’t have a blog at all if I had kids, as I’m unable to focus. Although some parents tell me it’s a learned skill.

Greetings from Texas Kathy. I know I’m not the biggest techie (not even remotely technie), but I am blogging from the Sam Houston Tollway N. outside of Houston in our RV. I’ve been connected in the mountains of TN, the bug infested hot highways of MS and LA, down to San Antonio. Now heading back and just loving this AT&T mobile wireless thingy and my MacBook Pro that lets me do my email, check all my blogs, check locations of all the hurricanes that seem to be determined to chase us away.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Peg at Lehigh — Oh, you are TO a techie and you can’t deny it! I was considering buying a mobile card to take with me and my laptop on my trip to Toronto. But the trip was so suddenly planned, I didn’t have time. Next trip, I’ll be well-equipped to blog from the road. Enjoy your road trip, chickie!

LOBO — I know! I’m really disappointed. I have been thinking of setting up a live “Bag Cam” so people can check in on it whenever they feel like it. But there is no secure location in my building to set up a camera and server. I don’t think my employer would go for a suggestion that they mount a camera on the outside of the building. It’d be awesome, though.

Kathy if I tell you that I haven’t seen snow by now, will you believe? But it’s a fact. Many friends of mine have told me that there’s nothing special about snow. The first time you may get exited, but the next time, all you probably think that is normal. However, I am still looking forward to my first date with snow…I swear I will bring my Mr.Right.

I also enjoy stillness, the peace, and tranquility. Living in a metropolitan area noise is all around almost 24 hours a day.So silence has become very valuable like a rare jewelry.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Hangbag for life — Where do you live? Do you mean you’ve never seen snow ever? Oh, I want you to see snow. But you’re right. Once you see the first one, it’s great. When you have to start shoveling it, not so fun anymore.
Jewelry — Oh, man. That’s bad. I’ve lived in places with lots of traffic and neighbor noise. I do have airplane noise overhead, but I’ve learned to live with it. I wish you peace and quiet!
October 28th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I blog on the couch, with my laptop, usually with at least one dog sharing the lap space with the computer. I had been wanting to start a blog for ages, but didn’t actually do it until we got wireless access, just so I could write from the couch. (My computer desk chair gives me a backache, and I knew I’d be spending a lot of time there once I got my blog going.) The TV doesn’t always bother me, but there are some shows that distract me too much. I can’t write during “Dirty Jobs,” for instance, because I can’t tear my eyes away from the lovely Mike Rowe.
October 31st, 2008 at 7:06 am
absepa — You’re right. Wireless and a laptop make blogging incredibly easier. I hated sitting up in the office staring at the screen. I write easier if I’m in a relaxed place, usually with a kitty by my side (now that I’m blogging indoors for the next few months). Oh, and Mike Rowe is indeed a cutey. I just can’t watch the stuff they make him do. Hope they pay him enough!

Since I’ve got the computer, I now call it my computer room. I have a PC emachine and my husband has mentioned several times he’s going to get me a laptop so he can have some time on the computer.
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:34 am
Instant Loan — That’s what we did. The laptop made it possible for my husband to remember what it was like to surf the web. Poor guy. I was physically attached to the PC chair for months.
