A Junk Drawer Comment Extravaganza!
Blogging, contests November 14th, 2008
A lot of blogs kick my giant butt in search engine optimization (SEO). Indeed, I get only a small percentage of visitors from search results.
But what I lack in those kinds of visits, I more than make up for with a loyal following and a healthy amount of comments, and that makes me happier than a pig in poop. Oink!
Comments are the life blood of my blog. I write, you comment, I jettison coffee out my nose reading what you have to say. That’s how it works.
My sidebar displays a live comment counter, and as you can see, we’re reaching quite a milestone — 10,000 comments!
So what shall we do about that? How about a Junk Drawer contest to beat all other contests?
To whoever leaves the 10,000th comment*, you will receive:
A Junk Drawer mug, suitable for any beverage or for putting under a spotlight on your mantle.
A Junk Drawer mouse pad, because mice want to click in style.
A Junk Drawer magnet that your fridge will appreciate.
A $20 Amazon gift card. Money good.
A mug or mouse pad with YOUR blog’s logo on it.
In case you’re worried that the 10,000th comment will be left in the middle of the night and you’ll miss your opportunity, I’m also offering chances to win a magnet with your logo or mine, your choice.
Until we hit the magic number, my husband Dave will choose one random comment** from new posts (including this one). I’ll give him the total amount of comments for each and he’ll pick a random number. I’ll take the final total as soon as I put up another new post.
I cannot tell you how much it means to me that you guys keep coming back for whatever it is you find entertaining here and stop long enough to chat about it. It’s what makes The Junk Drawer what it is today. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Give yourselves a hand and watch that counter!
* Spam comments are not recorded in the counter.
** Resist the urge to leave a million comments because it’ll disqualify you.

Kathy .. the main reason people visit your blog is because of the writing .. it is not only original but highly entertaining and in turn it also brings out the best writing in some of the people who comment!
Congratulations on approaching the 10,000 and also on your anniversary for last week!

Congratulations on reaching this milestone and I hope your second 10,000 is just around the corner!

Wow, this is a really cool idea for a contest and good luck to everyone commenting on all of your posts and watching the comment counter until the wee hours of the morning! I’m glad that I found your blog and I did so through Entrecard, which I am terribly addicted to. I tend to get a bunch of traffic through search engine results, but it really isn’t anything good and I don’t develop addicted Woman Tribune readers through it, just people looking to get their blog or website out there and people who leave comments saying very little that I end up deleting anyway, so SEO isn’t all that good when it comes to wanting to develop a following.

Some friend I am…I missed your blogaversary! Congrats on that milestone and your approaching 10,000th comment. When my blog grows up I want it to be just like yours! :0)
I gave up worrying about Google Page Rank and all that SEO stuff a long time ago. I’m happy for the traffic I get (not that I wouldn’t want more) and I strive to attract my quality, rather than because of search engine results.
You are, and have always been, a class act. That’s why people keep coming back, and many of them subscribe to your feed. Keep doing what you’re doing, Kathy. It works!
November 14th, 2008 at 9:45 am

I’m happy when I get just one comment. Though, my blog isn’t as interesting as yours.

I really can’t be bothered with SEO. I’m getting hits from Google, but I can’t be bothered to chase them -especially since most of them don’t hang around. They usually arrive to find out something in particular, and either they go away satisfied or they go away disappointed, but they do go away.
I guess it might be down to whether or not you are chasing money from ads.

Everyone: See, this is what I love so much. Coming home from work after a crummy, rainy day and finding a bunch of comments in The Drawer. Thanks! You guys are awesome!
Robin — Oh, I hope so! Somehow I’ve managed to gain a following of people who are so funny and engaging. Where did they all come from? How did they find me? All I know is I never want to lose this great little community. It makes blogging that much better.
Bella Casa — I don’t know why I bother reading about SEO anymore. I clearly don’t know what I’m doing. And part of me almost doesn’t want a flood of drive-by visits that won’t mean as much as the visitors I find organically.
JD at I Do Things — I might if everyone catches wind of the prizes! You’re another blogger who has such a wonderful group of followers. It’s for good reason. You’re one of the funniest ladies I know.
Shelly — This is the best way I could think of to thank those who comment here. If I could afford magnets for everyone, don’t think for a second I wouldn’t hand them out like candy!
Chris (Casey) — Too bad. You’re in the contest because it has to be very official and random! I love your idea of messiest cubicle. I want to see the spaces where people actually try to get work done and not suffocate in the process.
Lauren — Oooo! It wouldn’t happen to be a Keurig, would it? One of my sisters got one as a gift and now I have coffee maker envy. Everyone needs a hundred dollar machine to make a good cup ‘o joe.
Margaret — Ah, yes. But you’re a very popular blogger! I don’t know that anyone outside this group even knows who I am.
Daisy the Curly Cat — Oh, yes. 10,000 is almost as much as a squillion. It says so in all the math books. Don’t hurt your curly little head about it. You only have to know that it’s a very big number, and thank you for being among a few very special kitty visitors to The Junk Drawer.
Karen — I wasn’t even sure how many comments I got on the blog until I grabbed that counter. I have to say I was blown away. I’m so glad people feel compelled to speak up here. It means I’m doing something right.
Woman Tribune — I’ve had very good success with Entrecard, too. Some people say it’s a waste of time, but I disagree. The quality of visitors I get through it is very high. You’re absolutely right about SEO. Yes, it’s great to exploit that if you simply want to make gobs of money. But if you want genuine readers, I haven’t found that I’ve needed it.
Karen — Who the hell knows? I’ve read about SEO in general terms, but I swear I don’t know how to implement half of it. And I’m too tired to figure it out. The arrangement is still in the office where it can’t hurt me. And don’t worry about comments. I had a pittance in the first six months and it’s taken me a long time to increase them. Slow and steady wins the race.
Canucklehead — Ha! I guess we’ll see how many posts it turns out to be. I’ll try to post every other day to give plenty of opportunity to win something. And, hey! You do well for yourself, so no sulking. You’re going to make people think you don’t have your own huge following!
Karen, author of My Funny Dad, Harry — I knew I wanted to show my thanks somehow for all my visitors. I hope everyone knows how much they make my blogging experience some of the most fun I’ve had in my life.
robert bourne — Well, I could give you a magnet and I could wrap it in a Wal-mart bag, but it ain’t gonna be THAT bag. Honestly, it’s never coming out.
absepa — Thank you, my dear. I’ve always said half the fun of blogging is reading the comments. They make each post doubly fun!
Maureen — I don’t know either some days. It is a lot of work sometimes keeping up with comments, but they really are gold. Oh, and Dave’s totally OK about that post. You know it was really me who felt bad about it. You’re safe!
carol at A Second Cup — Thanks. It’s really an insane number, isn’t it? Good luck to you!
Nicole — Thank you for your visits. Maybe if you don’t win, I could send you a magnet or something anyway in trade for a pile of your delicious chocolate chip cookies?
Babs beetle — You should be pleased! You have quite a following yourself, me among them. I’m so glad to have met you in the blogosphere. We’re having a great run, aren’t we?
Lee — Thanks a bunch, Lee! I couldn’t agree with you more about SEO. There’s something very satisfying to find readers organically, through referrals or whatever. It means so much more to me than fly-by visits. Gosh, Lee. You’re going to make me cry. Thanks so much, buddy.
Steve — Trust me, I worried about that! But I can still tell a genuine comment from a bot one. The bots tend to be obsessed with their shortcomings if you know what I mean. Your MS OS date post made me insane, in a good way. I hate it just the same as you.
Jenn Thorson — You’re such a sweetheart and an amazing writer who actually writes Class A material! Sometimes when I read other humor blogs, I think how ridiculous mine is and I feel stupid half the time. I don’t have a way with words like other people have, and I’m not all that witty. But somehow this thing works and so that’s all that matters, right?
Bernie O’Hare — You know I’ll never forget the huge boost you gave me back on my grade school post. I’ve always seen that as one of the pivotal moments in turning this blog into something that more than my family read. Muchas gracias! I owe you more than a magnet.
fragileheart — Cancel vacations, don’t take bathroom breaks, and for God’s sake, don’t sleep!
Jaffer — My friend, Jaffer! Thank you! I always seem to get the weirdest hits from Google searches that I wonder what they must think when they land on my blog. I almost don’t even pay attention to how searches lead people here. For me, it’s more about subscribers and commenters. I’m doing something right, but I don’t know what!
chat blanc — It IS a comment party! Did anyone bring drinks? Oh, who am I kidding? Did anyone bring bacon?!?!
Gandalf and Grayson — It IS a lot of yacking! Uh-oh. Maybe you can get another human to help you out with commenting and blogging? You’re so cute, I’m sure you can find somebuddy!
Ferd — You should have a Junk Drawer anything. You’ve been with me so long. You never know. You’re number might be up (in a good way!) Nom nom is right. Makes me hungry every time I see it.
GoingLikeSixty — You’re in!
Joe — As do you! I love your blog because it’s like a mind dump every day. (No, not THAT kind of dump, silly!)
Steven Wilson — I like the sound of that!
shadowsrider — As writers, we all say we’re just happy to have our stuff published, but yeah, there’s something really rewarding about getting instant feedback through comments. It did take me a very long time to get them, though. No magic bullet here!
Broadway Matron — That’s so funny you said that. I do get a lot of comments here, but I have to try very hard to leave non-stupid comments on other people’s blogs. Why is that???
The Hawg! — For sure! I somehow managed to grab the attention of the chattiest people around. I love it!
Preston — I could put anything you want on a mug. I could put your mug on a mug! Your blog’s banner would look really neat scaled down, don’t you think?
Fancy — Ah, thanks chickadee! But it’s really the eclectic group of people who, for some reason, have latched onto me. I can’t take credit for how funny these people are!
Lori — It’s very hard to keep writing and feel like no one is reading. That’s how I felt in the beginning. For people like me who aren’t after the 5,000 page views per day thing, this suits me just fine.
brooke — You DO love to comment, girl! I’ll never forget how you read through just about the whole blog and commented on everything. That’s dedication. Or insanity!
Ken Armstrong — Is that the BeeGees I hear? What? Oh no. Now I have Jive Talkin’ in my head. Do whatever you need to do to win. It should also involve clicking your heels twice. And blinking. Or something.
Jay — You’re right. They don’t hang around, which makes them almost useless to me. I only run ads here so I can do stuff like pay my hosting and BUY PRIZES FOR CONTESTS! I don’t want to chase pennies either.
Data Entry Services — This may be your lucky break!
Shinade — I’m so glad to have you as a regular reader. I don’t take any of you for granted. This blog wouldn’t be the same without you guys. If you stopped commenting, I’d close up shop immediately. We’re having crappy weather, but that’s OK. A wedding to attend tomorrow and you know what that means — free food! Well, not so much free as PLENTY of it.
Trade Show Guru — Oh, that’s too many questions! I promise you the mug will be unused and spit-free! Oooo! I should include coffee, too! If I remember, I’ll ship that as well.
Karen C — Oh, thank you for reading even though you don’t comment. I love that I even have readers. Comments are icing on the cake. Mmmmm. Cake. I’ll put anything on a mug if you win. Doesn’t have to be a logo, so no worries.
Musing — Oh, no. Are we already staring at the counter? I was thinking today what a frenzy it’ll be when it gets very close to 10,000. That’ll be fun!
Regan — Hey, girl! Don’t you already have like everything you can possibly have from The Junk Drawer showroom? If you don’t win, maybe you’ll find a mouse pad under the Christmas tree. If you’re good.
the Grandpa — Oh, how cool! A spotlight blog! But your profile says you might junk other people’s writing. Please don’t junk The Junk Drawer!

storybeader — Thanks! And, yes, commenting on other blogs is perhaps the best way to increase readership. It also builds a community between and within blogs. Can’t go wrong!
Lee — Your fingers would fall off and then you couldn’t enjoy the gifts. Also, everyone would hate you because you cheated.
meleah rebeccah — I can just picture a whole bunch of people with their fingers on the click button at the magic moment!
Neena — Oh, thank you, my dear. I do hope I bring a smile to people’s faces. But it’s the commenters who are really something. They’re the chattiest people around!
ImitationAngel — Thanks! I can’t wait until the number rolls over. I can feel the excitement building.
Marty — Don’t worry. It’ll be clean and unopened. And spit-free!
Jamie — Thank you! But, admit it. You do really want cool stuff. I would!
Monica — I love reading the comments because it’s like I get a whole other post to read. Comments really double the fun here. Good luck.
Beamer — Awesome! Thanks for translating, because if you hadn’t I might have thought you were insulting me. DORK!
Vivienne — “dong king kong” Hilarious! Don’t correct her. Ever.
Lilly — Oh, I feel the same way many times. I sit and read the comments and laugh and laugh, wondering why I even write at all. I think one day I’m just going to put up a blank post and let the comments roll in. There’s an idea — let the readers write for me!

You have accumulated an amazing amount of comments and that is testimony to your writing skills and hard work. Good idea for a competition too!

I am so proud of you! I read you because I miss you and you make me laugh - something I need after a day of people who play bingo. You deserve to have a million comments because you are funny and a fab writer. If I figure out how to post this, it will be my first of many - I was too technophobic to leave one before!

Kathy, this is my first time here, but I will surely be back. You have a wonderfully entertaining writing style, so I am not surprised that you can boast with almost 10,000 comments! What a milestone. Congratulations and I like your celebratory idea.

I come to read because you entertain and enlighten me…although I don’t comment as regularly as I should, I am a faithful reader. Keep on keepin’ on!

Since I’m out of the running for the date of Windy’s freedom, I’d like to submit a date and time for the 10,000 comment. Friday, Nov. 21, 7:30 a.m. Pennsylvania time. I won’t sleep until the winner is revealed!
November 15th, 2008 at 8:12 am
Wow, we’re rally getting up there. You see, I will commenting once or twice a day and it won’t be spam.
Like, right now, I’m about to go to breakfast with my dad and later my friend is sleeping over and we’re going to see the new James Bond movie =)
I’ll be commenting to tell youse guys how that was too.

I’m a newbie visiting TimeThief on Blog Catalog - saw you & since I have a junk drawer too, I thought I’d visit. WOW - what a site! Congrat’s on 10,000; I’ve just hit 500 and you & your site will be an inspiration! Anyone who videos bags in trees and flowers planning murder & mayhem - is right up my alley. I love your writing style, you crack me up! I stopped in yesterday but somehow was too chicken to comment, like I was intimidated because the post was about comments or something. (Not sure what was up with that! You have gotten me to try to guess how many balloons are in a cubicle and recognize parts of objects, but I could not say “Congrats!”?
Anyway, your blog is great and congrats on your comment milestone!

I come here for so many reasons: my friends are here too, I love what you write, I am in good company when I can’t figure out what that thing in the junk drawer might be, and giggle at the comments other people leave. I hope your nose will be alright after all that caffeine douching it gets.

Comments should always be the life blood. For if you had no readers who would you write for. I know my inspiration comes from the comments received, but for some strange reason I am still somewhat of a wall flower myself. I will read a blog, and the comments left on it, but very seldom leave a comment. Only if I feel I have something to contribute to the conversation.
I am slowly working my way out of that. Thanks for the excuse to leave a comment.
BTW. I love your writing.

Mark — Ah, thanks! Of course, holding a contest about comments will get’cha more comments, too!
Mary Theresa — Welcome about the comment train! Glad you made it. Thank you, my dear. I’m so glad to put a smile on your face.
Rika Susan Marvin — Welcome to The Drawer and thank you so much! I’m still wowed every day when I see all the funny comments people leave here. Reading and laughing over them is one of the best parts of my day.
Barb (Craft Junkie) — Oh, thank you! It’s nice to know you and others are still out there, even though you don’t comment. I read tons of blogs I rarely comment on. Sometimes I feel intimidated by all the other funnier commenters and keep my trap shut!
ann of the junkdrawerblogfamily — You might be onto something, but will that commenter be YOU? Come on, you know you want it.
Regan — Well, technically, you’re supposed to only comment once per post. There’s a new James Bond movie? I think I’m blogging too much.
Kate — Hey, welcome from BlogCatalog. I don’t get too many visitors from there (I think I’m doing something wrong). I’ve been at the blog for 16 months, so it took a while to reach this milestone. Stick around for more zany. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Kelly — Thank you! You know, I always laugh that I seem to have really dreadful visitor numbers, but somehow I have a high number of comments. Someone should do a study on that. It doesn’t make much sense.
Kat — Thanks for swinging by every day. It’s so great to have a group of regulars, you among them. I just hope I can keep this up and make your visits worthwhile.
SavvySuzie — A buggerload! I love that! And it sure is. If I had known I’d see that number back when I started, I’d have laughed my head off. I’m the luckiest girl in the world.
Maggie — That’s funny. Sometimes I want to comment on other blogs, but I chicken out, too. So many of the comments left before me on humor blogs are way funnier than anything I could write, so I run away.
diesel — Speaking of blogs I rarely comment on, I don’t know why I torture myself trying to come up with a caption for your movie photo contests. I’m always late, and everyone before me kicks my ass.
LGR — Thanks! And, yeah, isn’t this theme the best? Thanks again for offering customization services. I love what you did with the 2-column theme I used to use. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t designed the first one. It took me days of searching and I never liked anything more than this.
Carol — Love your ducky avatar! Thanks for swinging by. Even if I have a less than stellar post, you can always count on something funny in the comments. I’m really grateful for them.
TheSnackHound — I’m really excited for the big moment. I hope it comes at a time I’m awake to see it. Maybe I’ll have my husband record the moment!
Eric S — It’s a paradox, isn’t it? We crave comments, but don’t always leave them on other blogs. Maybe it’s because all the “professionals” tell you not to comment unless you have something really valuable to add. Don’t worry here. Say anything!
Jeff — Yeah, #6,913 had that special something, didn’t it? It had the humor of #2,710, and the bizarreness of #8,021.
Celia — Dream it, baby!

Regan — Yes, my dear. ONE comment! Now stop commenting! So does your Auntie Kathy get some gingerbread house or what?
meleah rebeccah — It’s gonna happen faster than most people think. Seriously, I’m getting very excited for the Big Moment!
Jodi — Thank you very much!
KFJ - Yikes! Can you imagine a million comments? How insane would that be?
Braja — You get points for being honest. (p.s. I love that monkey picture over on your blog!)

Well, I might let my Auntie Kathy have some if theres any left next time she comes over.
And I’ll give her some extra if I can comment some more.
