An Extreme Home Makeover
Fun November 27th, 2008A hamster I know is having a terrible time of things. His name is Seamus (pronounced SHAY-mus). See, he used to live in this house until yesterday.
It was a rockin’ awesome house. A colorful, activity-filled pad that made him the envy of all his friends. Seamus used to have notorious parties there. The bass-thumping, booze-flowing kind, and a rave or two. The cops came once, but they couldn’t arrest anyone because they didn’t have handcuffs tiny enough.
Seamus’ owner decided that this cage was too hard to clean, and so I joined her on a trip to SuperPetz, where she picked out a new cage that was easier to maintain.
Seamus got an Extreme Home Makeover. And not the good kind. This is Seamus’ house now:
* Not Seamus
See how it’s a piece of crap? See how Seamus’ mother doesn’t love him anymore? Even though it’s been explained to him that the downturn in the economy is not the reason he was moved out of his condo and into slum housing, he’s having a hard time understanding.
Don’t worry, Seamus. I’m calling PETA in the morning.

We had Seamus’ old cage set up for the clinic mice that lived at the veterinary clinic I used to work at.
The cage is really not that hard to clean.
How boring is Seamus’ new cage! Nothing to climb on, no cool tunnels to explore. Just a crappy wheel.

Oh what a shame ! No pet should ever have to downgrade just because their person does not want to take the added responsibility.
Peeshaw !
If this is your level of commitment and if it remains at this level, come few weeks and you going to hate cleaning the new cage just as you did the old one !

Seamus could have cooperated a bit with keeping the house clean, you know? Seamus wants, wants, wants, and his mother does, does, does. She’s tired! I don’t know, but I think most of the responsibility falls on Seamus. Just sayin’.

I think Seamus needs to find a new owner who won’t complain about cleaning a tiny cage.

Ooooh I bet Seamus is pissed! When I moved Princess Tempura Buttfluff from her small cage to a big wire one she was mad as heck for about a week - then she got over it.
But yeah, the wire cages are WAY easier to clean. Pop the ham in a ball and hose the thing out.

Hi, Everyone. Every once in a while, one of my posts is funnier in my head than it is on paper. This is one of them. I’m sorry a lot of you feel bad for Seamus. You don’t need to.
His Mom tells me that he loves his new pad and works out on the new wheel more than he ever could with the old one. He also got a mini-house (not pictured) that he loves crawling in and out of. He leaves the cage often to play with Mom’s kids. She even bought Hamsters for Dummies so she can provide all the TLC that every dwarf hamster deserves. Please believe me when I tell you that Seamus is a lucky little guy to be living with this family.
Also, for the record, I made fun of the Mom the entire time we shopped for a new cage. She knew this piece like this was coming.
OK, I’ll shut up now. Beamer, you were right.

It’s okay…I got the “humor” part. I know just what you mean about things only being funny in your head. I wrote a long blog post the other day about a ridiculous situation in my office (complete with diagram). I was just about to post it, when I realized that anyone who is not me was not going to find it even remotely funny. I guess that’s one of the drawbacks to having an odd sense of humor.

Funny. That first home looked way too high-maintenance, even for a human to live in. I bet Seamus is much happier now that he has simplified his life. We should all take a lesson from Seamus’s mom. As long as we have clean water, fresh shavings, and plenty of pellets, we have nothing to complain about.

Kathy, I think it is funny. I like making fun of that Ty guy on the TV show. I realize it is for a good cause, but some of the stuff they do for those homes is far over the top. I mean come on, they put a bowling lane in one house, was that really a “NEED?”
So the Hamster had to downsize, Hey I understand. I know of a house near me that put a bathroom in for the express purpose to serve their DOG. (Wasn’t us!)
Good to see someone going the other way. Heck I have to patrol the yard for Dog Dirt detail daily, I understand having to clean the hamster cage.
So Kathy, any plans to downsize Stinky’s bathroom facility? LOL!

I thought it was funny. But apparently half of your readers have a warped sense of humor while the other half are morally indignant over the poor treatment of Seamus. Even if I had the first kick-ass house I would be too lazy to get off my hamster butt and take advantage; the wheel is more my speed.

When I was a young lad, I wanted a hamster. My dad said if I learned all about them he’d get me one. I read up on them and proudly told them that they are very neat and use all the corners of their cage. One corner for the bathroom, one corner for sleeping, one corner for playing and one for their food.
The prick got me a round cage.

Seamus’s cage gets cleaned twice a week now since it’s so easy with the new cage, decreasing his risk of hamster illnesses. He loves his new wheel. The fancy one was too heavy for him to really get going because he is a dwarf hamster. Also, Seamus is 1/2 Irish on his mother’s side, not Scottish. Unfortunately, his father was a bit of a wastrel so Seamus’s paternal heritage is unknown. He is very proud of his Irish heritage. Seamus asked me to mention that he is very heartened that so many people were concerned about the welfare of a hamster. It is a refreshing change from those who call him a rat and he is grateful for your good wishes.
