What’s That? Wednesday
contests November 5th, 2008Here ya go, folks! Another installment of What’s That? Wednesday.
How it works:
1. The photo shows a small portion of a larger object.
2. First person to guess the object it’s a part of wins either 500 Entrecard credits or a Junk Drawer magnet, your choice.
3. Guesses accepted until 6AM EST Friday, November 7. If no one gets it by then, a prize will be awarded as soon as someone does.
Really super helpful information: I realize it looks like a face if viewed standing on your head. That it looks like a face has nothing to do with the object. I didn’t photograph it right-side up OR upside-down. The thing doesn’t have an up or down. Well, it kinda has both. Oh, nevermind.
There now, didn’t that help?
What the heck is it?
CONTEST CLOSED: So many of you guessed correctly that it’s the strike plate of a stapler! I announce the winner here. Keep in mind, the next one will be much, much harder to guess!

I think it might be part of a stapler. You know the part you can twist to make the staples close together snug or loose.

I knew this one right away (stapler thingy) but alas… I don’t check my feed reader often enough to win around here. Maybe next time you can tell me in advance what time you’re going to publish and I’ll watch for it. Better yet, next time tell me in advance what the mystery object is and I’ll win for sure!

Definitely that part of the stapler where the staples come down. Then there’s that button on the bottom where you can rotate it to curve the staple outwards. I never understood why you’d wanna do that, but whatever. I guess it makes the stapler seem like it has “features”.

Oh crap I never knew you could turn that plate around to make the staple curve out. Hah. Learn something new every day. Not sure what difference it makes but I think I’ll leave my stapler like that just to see if anyone notices that my staples are unique.

Hey, everybody — I’m pretty screwed up with my commenting schedule tonight. I’ve already posted who won, so go check it out. I warned the winner everyone would hate him for getting in first, but that’s the price he pays for winning.
Joe — Nope, and would that be a really tiny toaster?
Happy Hour Sue — That would have been my guess. Feel good about that.
TheSnackHound — No, but I had studied some VCR/DVR things beforehand and thought it’d be too easy.
Jenn — Good guess!
ethanator1088 — Everyone hates you.
Tess — Right, but too late.
Canucklehead — You weren’t alone. So I guess it wasn’t that easy!
Mike — Correct, but too late.
mp stewart — Yep, but too late.
Jeff — Prove it. Sure, next time I’ll cheat for you. Do you think anyone else will be mad?
Shieldmaiden96 — Correct. Yo. And for the love of God, how did you know it was the Swingline model 545???
Babs beetle — Yes, but a bit late to the party.
Steve — That’s OK. You were pretty fast, but you got beat anyway. Sorry!
April — Yes. For the record, I post these on some Wednesdays at Noon EST. So get in line then.
RedRaider — Nope, but good guess.
shadowsrider — Nope, but good guess. Shieldmaiden96 guessed the exact model, which kinda worried me.
carol at A Second Cup — Aw! I like that guess!
Susan — Hilarious! Yes, how did you know?
The Jillybean — Got that right. Keeps me laughing all day long!
Shieldmaiden96 — Freak.
brooke — Nope, but it made good sense. Hey, but you’re already a winner over at JD’s I Do Things blog, so good for you!
Regan — And you already had, what? Twelve guesses when I sent it to you ahead of time the other night?
absepa — Don’t worry. Lots of people can’t get them. There will be many, many more chances, so don’t lose hope!
Daisy the Curly Cat — I’m glad you are not allowed to use a stapler because I’m afraid you might use it on Harley when he’s pestering you.
Fancy — It does, but nope!
Vivienne — Yes, and if you could have guessed the exact model before Shieldmaiden did, you would have rec’d a magnet too. Did you get called nerd a lot? Or worse?
Chris (Casey) — Feasible, yes. Beam me up (to get away from the farts).
storybeader — Yeah, I felt like I had to eliminate “face” answers right off the bat. And no. Sorry!
pussreboots — The latch thing seems to be the next best guess. Good job, but sorry. You lost.
robert bourne — As God is my witness, you WILL get a magnet one of these days.
Lee — Well, it depends on how you do your stapling. It is upside down, no it’s not, yes it is….
ImitationAngel — Late, like mostly everyone else. Don’t feel bad.
Shinade — Hi!!!
Beamer — You scare me. But in a good way.
JD at I Do Things — I’m sorry Gus! Don’t be ascairt! Hey, when you get yourself a blog, you can have credits. Now get crackin’!
Ava — OK, so I don’t understand this button thing you’re talking about. I’m intrigued. You mean I can make my staples do different things? How did I not know this?
Alan — I love that it was a face. There’s a book out there that’s nothing but objects in the wild that have facial features. Sounds like something I should have thought of first. Dammit.
karen — Yes, I do indeed. Remember 8-track, too?
Donna — Yes, but you’re way late.
kara — This whole thing with the switch is interesting. I haven’t figured out how to mess with it, though. I need stapler training, apparently.
Jamie — Way to go! But you’re late to the game. Better luck next time.
Don — Yep. You’re in good company. Evidently this was too easy. Watch out next time. I’m making it as brutal as possible.
Gandalf and Grayson — I’m sorry. There’ll be many more chances, so keep your kitty thinking caps on!
Data Entry Services — It’s fun, isn’t it?
Dan Brantley — Sorry. Don’t mean to make your head spin. Oh, who am I kidding? Yes I do!
Jocelyn — Stapler butt! Perfect! You are right, just late.
April — I didn’t either. What’s that all about? A stapler’s supposed to be a really dumb item, not have all these fancy features.
BabaBooey — You wish you could see my belly button. It’s the only thing on my body I wouldn’t be embarrassed to publish. Don’t dare me, cuz you know I will.
Preston — Your comment made me chuckle. Said it in my head just like that nasty witch!
Canucklehead — Thanks for Swinglining by again.
meleah rebbecah — You weren’t alone. And p.s., I think I can spell your name now without looking! Yea for me!
JEANNE — I totally know what you mean. And thank God it does have a name or else a whole lotta people would have had to say what you said. Now that would have been fun.
Matt Oxley — But you’re correct! That counts for something. Just doesn’t get you a magnet.
Bruce — Nope, but that seems to be the 2nd most popular guess, so feel good about it.
brooke — Yes, I’ll get you your prize from JD’s blog. Not a problem.
November 10th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Thank You!
