Happy Birthday, Mom!
Bizarre, embarrassing February 9th, 2009
My mom celebrated a birthday this weekend. I think when it’s my birthday, I should celebrate her again.
Why?
Because I weighed 10 lbs, 8 ozs. (4.8 kg) at birth.
And she didn’t have a C-section.
Yeah.
For the record, my mom was, is and always will be rail thin. I’m guessing I stole everything she sent down the chute. She must have thought she was eating for six.
Oh, and if anyone was born fatter than me, there’s a Junk Drawer magnet in it for you. And sympathies to your mother.
Stumble it!

February 9th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Holy moly! I was nowhere close. 5 lbs 15 ounces and 22 inches long. My Mother told me I looked like a spider, all long spindly arms and legs and a little round tummy.
You should definitely do something special for your Mother on your birthday. Maybe you could buy her a 10-pound bag of potatoes and throw in a couple of extra bakers so she can relive the experience…

does the weight i have added since birth count? No wonder you like bacon!! It is in your genes!! How can you explain 10#?

My sister carried twins at over 7 lb each, does that count? She was so big a tent coat wouldn’t fit her!

My dad lives near me here in Colorado. He’s now 87 and weighs 200. But at birth he weighed 13 pounds. Eight years later she gave birth to twins, individually weighing 7 lbs and 8 lbs—total 15 lbs! Ouch! I love the photo you posted along with this story. It’s adorable!

I wasn’t that big at my birth but my daughter was a whopping 9 lbs 9 oz, also not a cesarean, so I empathize deeply with your mom.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Too funny, Kathy. It’s a good thing birth weight has no bearing on adult weight, huh? You beat my husband by two ounces…he was 10lbs 6oz. His younger brother was 11lbs 5oz. But I’m not giving you his address…I’m too selfish, haha.
When I was pregnant the first time, my mother in law kept telling me how big the baby would be because my dear husband had been a big baby and was/is a big man (6′5″ tall and 300 pounds). But none of my babies have been big…the first was 7lbs even, the 2nd was 5lbs 12oz, and the 3rd was 4lbs 5oz. I’ve said that if I have another, we won’t be able to find it because it’ll be too tiny. They just keep getting smaller.
I think the world record for biggest baby is 18lbs.

When my uncle was born In 1920, he weighed 13 pounds and was so broad-shouldered the doctor had to push him back in, then pull him out with one arm over his head to avoid breaking my grandmother’s pelvis. She was advised not to have any more kids, but luckily she had my mother 6 years later.

I wasn’t a big baby…but my grandmother loves to tell stories about my dad’s birth…he was apparently almost a month late and she refused to have a c-section. She claims he weighed almost 14lbs and could practically sit up on his own already. I’m not sure about the last part….but I believe that he was a big baby since he’s 6′4″ and 300lbs now. I can’t even imagine it cause my grandma is a tiny woman.

ROFL I was premature, and my son was premature. He was 5 lbs 4 oz, 19 in. long and was born at the first week of the last trimester. He decided to come out sideways and has a huge alien head and line backer shoulders. We’re waiting for him to grow into them. Now he looks like I starve him, is finally getting SOME height to him, and is nearly 10 years old. He still has an alien head.
He would have been a 10 lb baby if I’d of carried him to term. But then, my labor lasted all of 4 hours, I slept through it and delivery (au natural natch)and woke up to push, got told by the nurse “don’t push! don’t push” “gotta push” “don’t push, don’t push!” “gonna push” and pushed, my mom is a retired RN and caught the boy bungee jumping out before he hit the floor (and a fluffy middle aged woman belly sliding had to be a sight, too bad I was sleeping), and then nearly died because the Doc refused to believe I was in labor and didn’t show up for 3 HOURS after he was born.
It’s just cool when people hear it and the look on the face.

Wow! And I thought my girls were big, each weighing just under 9 lbs. I don’t know how much I weighed at birth. I do recall that my dad weighed just over 12 lbs (my poor grandma!), but he grew up to be 6′5 and 220 lbs, so I guess that was to be expected. I saw a picture of him when he was 2 and he looked like a kindergartner.
February 10th, 2009 at 6:17 am
Mary Lou — I’m sure you’re mom was like “Yea for spindly!” Oh, man. A 10lb bag of potatoes looks HUGE! So sorry, mom.
rattln’ along — I love how everyone here knows how much I like bacon. Five people sent me the link to Bacon Explosion that’s been floating around the web. One woman even said “Here’s a link for your bacon blog.” I don’t have a bacon blog. Do I talk about bacon that much?
Chris Casey — Then I guess apologies are in order for your mother too. I’m sure the doctors told her “He’ll grow into it.”
Babs beetle — I’ll have to ask her if I lost a lot of that soon after I arrived. I can’t imagine having twins, much less being that woman who recently gave birth to eight. How is that physically possible to carry that many???
Becky Jamison — Holy shmoly! 13?!? Wow, and twins at that weight? There’s something really not fair about that. If you have twins, they should only equal one baby, I say. Yeah, I liked the picture, too. I got it from http://www.sxc.hu/ (free photos) when I searched “baby feet.”
Red Flashlight — I love how everything can be blamed on Nixon. It’s like Six Degrees of Nixon. Awesome.
April — Oh, you poor thing. Tell me, how do you have enough energy to push and also scream your head off? Cuz I’m sure there was a lot of screaming. God bless you.
Cindy — Wow, those are amazing weights for both of them. I’m relieved for you that you had small babies. OMG. Can you imagine an 18lb baby at birth? That’s like having a three month old. Cripes!
Angi — Yikes! I don’t know how any woman would survive that without drugs. Wake me when it’s over.
Lauren — I can’t find my hospital card. Looked last night because I wanted to scan it and post it here. I don’t recall being extra long, though. It’s only the scary birth weight that I remember from the last time I looked at it. I’ll try to locate it again.
Jen — I imagine you have to go grocery shopping twice a week to keep a growing 16 yr old boy fed. You probably look in the fridge and think “Didn’t I just buy that? We’re out already?”
Ladybugg — Oh, man, another 13 pounder! Why do I keep hearing screams? Get me a Tylenol. Strike that. Make it morphine. What a sweet story, too. Thankfully your grandmother didn’t listen!
cardiogirl — And the story has it that it was one of the hottest Augusts she could remember. And no A/C. Honestly, I should be giving her gifts on my birthday, not the other way around.
JenniJ — OMG. That takes the prize. Funny about almost sitting up on his own. Thank God the human anatomy makes it possible to be small, but pass watermelons when the need arises. But holy God, 14!
SewDucky — “Huge alien head.” Oh, I’m sorry I’m laughing, but you said it! And you mean like the face I have right now? Oh, thanks for the chuckle!
Jane Doe — OMG, I keep laughing when I know I shouldn’t. I keep feeling so sorry for the mothers who had giant babies to deal with, but the thought of kindergartner babies make me laugh.

My son was a month premature, and was 9 pounds 11 oz then! (yay C-section!)On his due date (after losing weight for two weeks because of premie issues) he was over 10 pounds. He has made up for being premature, he is 20 and over 6 feet, and built like a football player.
I am only 5′4″ and was a small baby 6 pounds and change.
My father and uncle though, were 12 and 13 pounds, born in the 30’s, which meant NO DRUGS! My grandmother was a saint.

Gestational diabetes can lead to some very big babies, so bing big and premature is not impossible.
You have me beat and everyone in my immediate family. My aunt, who’s like 5′ nothing married to my uncle (6′7″) had three babies over 10 pounds.
Even though I had gestational diabetes and doctors were worried about the size of my children, I kept it under control. My first, born late, was 7.5 pounds. My son and daughter, both born a few days early, were 8 even and 8+ (am I evil because I don’t remember exactly?) respectively. I feel for your mother. Seriously.

I gave birth to my son who was 10lbs, 8 oz, too. No C-section. Ohhh yeah. He got, uh, kinda, STUCK, halfway into this world. The doc was about to break my son’s collarbone to expedite the process, but we prayed first, and the boy was instantly born. To this day, the doc looks at my son and says, “It was a miracle!”

Preston — So much for the newborn clothes, eh?
ettarose — Breech births can be scary, but I guess you figured there was still only one way out!
Regan — As I recall, you were rather tiny. Ask your mom for the specifics. I’m sure she’ll remember. Social security number, cell number and kid’s birth weight.
Singular Girl — Brutal. And same for my mom. One of the hottest summers in decades. You owe her that tummy tuck!
Jenn Thorson — I know. I’m forever apologizing.
Shieldmaidn96 — Hey, if it’s gonna be a car, Camaro’s not too shabby. Loved that car. You must be so efficient now, right? And never late for parties.
absepa — Geez, you and Shieldmaiden. Hey, babies wait for no one, including doctors.
Jenny — Wanna bet? My picture is old. Ask anyone who knows me personally and they’ll say it’s not me. That’s a 2004 me, sadly.
shadowsrider — Does it freak you out that your kids are so burly and they came out so small? Think about it. Freaky! Yeah, early 20th century medicine must have been a bitch.
TheSnackHound — Seriously. Something’s messed up there. Can you imagine a full-term pregnancy? The kid would have come out talking.
carol at A Second Cup– I do! Tell me, is it true that you don’t really remember the pain?
DhoyM — I’m sure you would be able to feel every extra ounce of weight, carrying and then coming out. I tip my hat to you.
Grog — I’m sure it was, especially if complications made a C-section the only alternative. See, this is why I don’t have kids. I’m a big baby in more ways than one.
Kellyology — That’s pretty much what I’d be requesting. “Does it have to really come out naturally? Can’t you just take it out? Thanks.”
Stephanie Barr — A-ha! So your aunt can blame your uncle! You were lucky to have kept things under control. I know of some women who have trouble in that last trimester. I’d be a basket case.
Mrs. Mecomber — Oh, man. That’s so scary. I’m not kidding. Knock me out and wake me when it’s over.
georgie — Well, they were big. You’re to be commended. And they should give you gifts on their birthdays.
Carla — “…fell out.” Oh, too funny. You gave your mom a break now, didn’t you? Bless your heart.
Shinade — I’ll have to check with my mom and see how much birth weight I dropped soon after. I only really got heavier at times during my 20’s and now. I wish my heavy birth weight meant I would be so thin it would be hard to keep weight on, but alas, I don’t have that problem.
Laureli — I’m pretty sure my siblings were all normal-sized. I’m the last born, if that makes a difference. Glad you liked the band-aids!
Comedy Plus — Ah, thanks! She doesn’t read the blog, but Dad sometimes reads it to her, so hopefully he’ll catch this post. If not, I’ll make sure Mom gets all the good wishes. Thank you!
Bruce — I don’t know. I’ll have to ask her. Of course, I was an angel my whole childhood. Ha!
Lee — Same here. I was so cute and I don’t know what happened. I want a do-over.
Geakz — Hey! I’m the last of five, too! I’m sure our mothers would have preferred getting heavier babies out of the way sooner. Our poor moms!
Joel Klebanoff — Oh, I got you beat there, too I bet. I went to Catholic school my whole life. I have enough guilt to last me a lifetime.
Jill — Honestly. Can you even imagine a natural birth of a 10+ lb baby? Makes the head spin. Wow, lots of twins moms here. Interesting!
Kaye — Eek is right! I still can’t get over hearing about some moms who have babies over 15lbs. It’s like a turkey.
meleah rebeccah — Hey, you still deserve an award. God bless you. And thanks for the birthday wishes.
And you too, Joe! I’ll pass them along to my mom.
February 10th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Chelle — I agree. You earned them. I don’t doubt the 9mos. before is the hardest part. I would not do well pregnant. I already blow up when it’s warm out. I’d pretty much turn into a beach ball.
Nancy — I know. Which is why I’m always apologizing!
Sue — I bet you did. And my sympathies.

Actually, no diabetes to fluff up the weight, just good solid Irish farm girl genes. We know he was at least a month premature because he came out covered with hair (can’t remember what that hair is called now, they lose it by the 8th month)and with an immature liver. He had a few other things not quite ready for prime time, so actually I think his due date was a bit early. I did eat a lot of tuna fish and peanut butter though…

Close for me but no cigar, I wieghed 9lbs. 4oz., But i think my dad gets a magnet becasue he was 10lbs. 13 oz. at birth with no c-section.

My mother makes sure that I never forget my birth weight. I was 10 lbs 14 oz. She labored with me for 27 hours before the doctor finally insisted on a c-section. She said it was really hard to have your first child and not be allowed to pick her up. My grandmother stayed with them for a while and she would carry me around and put me into mom’s lap for the first couple of weeks until the scar healed. She tells me all the time now that it isn’t my fault I’m such a pain. I started that way.

shadowsrider — Blogojevich Head on a baby is adorable. The son of a friend came out with very thick jet black hair. He looked like Elvis.
Abbey R — Aw, that’s sweet. I’m quite sure nobody messes with him OR you.
brooke — Oh, your poor grandmother!
Arian — What a great story (for your Mom, not for you!) It’s too bad she wasn’t able to be so mobile right after. I keep forgetting that a c-section is fairly major surgery.

Ehh, my little brothers find it fun to figure out how much they can push him before he holds em upside down or sits on em. A week or two ago I was talking to a friend on Gmail and he interrogated him. Afterwards he sent him and email and said he was just trying to make sure I wasn’t talkin to a person like he sees when he watches Dateline

Wow that is something your Mom must have been pleased when you finally came out into this world. Be very kind to her!

Abbey R — I think that’s what bigger brothers are for.
frostygirl — Got that right! What a relief it must have been.
meghan — Holy crap. If you look at a turkey, it’s hard to imagine what something like that can squeeze through. It doesn’t seem physically possible, does it?

You got me beat, and my daughter too!
February 27th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
My son was 10lbs 11oz and 24″ long but by c-section after trying for 36 hours first. No more kids for me after that one. Not going to see if they got bigger or smaller. His daddy is 6′4″ 225 and now Mike 17 years later is 6′4″ 175 lbs. Me, short and round.

love gucci — I got most people beat, no doubt. I wonder what percentile I was in. I’m too lazy to look it up.
jools — So we can safely blame your husband then? I’m sorry you went through a day and a half labor first. If you could turn the clocks back…

Kathy, you would have been above the 90th percentile, depending on your gestational age- according to Wikipedia- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_weight

You are so big during birth. Your mom must have enjoyed cuddling you. Who’s the baby in the picture? Those tiny feet… They are adorable. I can’t help but notice the fabric used to blanket the baby. It looks like a knit stuff to me.
