Cell Phones: Then and Now
Fun April 12th, 2009Yep, that’s my first cell phone from circa 1995. I actually used it in a grocery store to make the emergency call to my husband that cell phones were built for: regular or Double Stuff Oreos?
I’m pretty sure that’s when the whole Wanting to Punch People Who Use Cell Phones for Unnecessary and Stupid Calls thing started.
Sorry. You can blame me.
Stumble it!

LOL Regan – there were actually BIGGER phones than that. I remember the first ones that were real car phones. They came with a bag that hooked into your car and you were tethered to your car just like we used to be tethered to the wall with corded phones.

@Shawn Man o’ man… I remember watching Saved by the Bell and seeing Zack with that huge cell phone he would pull out of his back pack. It was awesome.
I don’t even have a cell phone still. I don’t really need one. I had a ‘pay as you go’ phone for a while, but figured it just wasn’t worth it. Besides, I think they are the most annoying thing in the world. Whenever I am out with friends and their phone rings, it is like a slap in the face. If you want to talk on the phone and not me, stay at home.

Chris Casey — I occasionally see something like that in movies or TV (most recently on the X-Files, I think). Cracks me up every time.
Shawn — I never watched Save by the Bell, so for all the others who don’t know what a Zack Morris phone is, here ya go! Too funny!
Regan — Har! What a weisenheimer! The phone is also very heavy and ugly and obvious, but I never misplaced it.
Roxanne — I’ve only seen those kind in movies. For the time it must have been something, but geez. They look so ridiculous now.
The Mother — That’s so funny. It’s like with PCs, too. I remember getting a Gateway PC with a whole one gig of disk space and I told my husband “It’s huge! We’ll never fill it!” Yeah. I said that.
Babs Beetle — I’d love to see one of the earliest phones in person. So funny to look at. When the economy turns around, and if I want a phone with more bells and whistles, I could see myself with an iPhone. Right now, my little pay-as-you-go, no frills phone works fine. I found my old phone in the basement. We actually had two of them, but I donated the other one to Radio Shack, who turned around and gave them to women’s shelters. It was a program to give free phones to women who needed to take and make private phone calls while they were trying to get their lives back together.
The Hawg! — Guess what? This is my only personal cell phone since 1995, too. I used to have one for work that I only used for work (rarely). And I only bought this one because I’m traveling alone this spring and summer. Not sure if I’ll want it after I’m done.
lilruth — Double Stuff, all the way. I should have known it was a dumb question. Shouldn’t have had to ask.
Lola — A colleague swears by his Motorola. In fact, my old clunker was a Motorola. I do like my cute little Nokia. It’ll do the trick for my needs, which are few.
Mike Foster — It’s weird, too, because I’m not a pack rat. I guess I kept it because I still think it was way cool for the time.
AVCr8teur — I bet it was. Should have kept it so you can show the young’uns how life used to be back in the stone ages.
Gary — I have distinct needs for this pay-as-you-go phone. I’m traveling alone this spring and summer, and after that I’ll probably get rid of it. The phone itself cost only twenty bucks. Yeah, I’m cheap. But the good news is I’m a very polite cell phone user. If ‘m on one, I always move to a private room and shut the door. Wish more people would do that.

I’m glad I was not alone in wanting to punch those early mobile phone users. I lived in London and seeing those berks on the tube prattling on about their supper used to *kill* me.

If anyone who saw him using it, he/she would have given him the ‘are you showing off’ look.

OH MY! Do NOT get me started on cell phones (and I don’t blame you..that was an emergency)! I don’t think anyone under the age of 30 should be permitted to own or use a cell phone (unless they have children and it’s an emergency). I also think that every state should ban cell phone usage in any moving vehicle. And, all cell phones should be confiscated at the door of schoolhouses. Furthermore, they should also be confiscated as you are entering a restaurant. We were dining at a rather exclusive restaurant several weeks ago and the cacophony of the different ringtones during dinner was deafening! DARN IT…you got me started!

I remember reading in some science magazine when I was a teenager (Omni?) that one day — get this — we would all have tiny communicators that could clip on our belts, and people would be able to reach us anywhere we went. Just like Star Trek! Geek that I was (am), I thought that sounded pretty damn cool. Now I grudgingly keep mine on and charged most weekdays so my clients can get in touch, but I only really relax once it’s switched off at night.
So that’s two down: tiny communicators, and doors that swish open automatically when you walk up to them. Still waiting for my personal phaser and a ride in a transporter. Oh yeah, and my personal helicopter. Just what exactly happened to those, anyway?

Ken Armstrong — Oh, I wanted to punch early users and I also want to punch current users. Probably more than before. We don’t want to hear you, people! Nope, never heard of a handy. Thanks for the lesson.
Steven Wilson — Were you a trucker? Love that you needed a wall mount for it.
Steve — I don’t know, Steve. You might be onto something there with the vibrator. It’s like a Swiss army phone.
John J Savo — I have no idea. I know. It makes no sense whatsoever.
JD at I Do Things — A purse phone. Hysterical. I love your mom. Well, I didn’t know if Dave was in the mood for more cookie or more middle.
The Daily Blonde — Wow! 1987! I thought I was hip in 1995. You trumped me.
shadowsrider — That video is awesome. Bookmarking it. Loved the fart thing at the end.
Jenn Thorson — It was a clunky, chunky phone and I thought I was so cool. I love how tiny my new phone is. However, I won’t go smaller. I’m not a Bluetooth kinda girl.
staciesmadness — I wonder how important the calls were if the phone weighed 10 pounds? I think it’s proportional to how much you sweat carrying it around.
Grace — I was probably hoping he’d say regular because did you ever look at the calories of a single Double Stuff? It’s criminal.
Maureen — Ah, another cell phone pack ratter. I was thinking of a Blackberry, but honestly, I can’t justify the expense. Yes, I’d like to have email and stuff, but I definitely don’t need it.
Aftercancer — I think I had a pager in 1990 or something. You don’t really see those anymore, do you?
Stephanie — Wha? Glad you traded up for a more considerate husband! Geesh.
Tiggy — I’m finding my tiny phone is REALLY easy to lose. A colleague saw it and predicted I’d lose it in short order unless I got a carrying case for it. He’s probably right.
BK — I have to admit, I felt very silly calling from the grocery store, but hey, it WAS cool for its time. Never again. It’s ludicrous to call for every little thing and all it does is annoy everyone around you.
wiregems — I’d love to see it. I’m guessing you don’t still have it, though. Does your ghetto blaster still blast?
Daisy the Curly Cat — Hardly. It did exactly one thing. Let you place calls about cookies.
Sherry at EX Marks the Spot — In suitcases, too! I’ve never seen one in person, but I have on TV. Can you see Jack Bauer using one of them on “24?”
Jim at Cool Stuff for Dads.com — Ah, but it’s worth pulling out and laughing at it. I did love my Treo for the email and web access. But they were mostly perks. Definitely not a real need.
Pricilla — Oh, good grief. How many accidents did we have back then? I’m sorta wondering, too, how good the coverage could have been. I mean, how many cell towers could have been in operation back then?
Judy Miller — In all honesty, I wouldn’t have one either if not for my traveling this spring and summer. I do not need a cell, and part of me was proud when I didn’t have one. I can be untethered if I wanna be!
Babs Beetle — I love the pay-as-you-go option. It’s really all I need. Oh, and I noticed today that there was another 10 bucks put on my account somehow. I’m guessing it was from the nice AT&T people because I wrote a glowing letter to the woman who sold it to me for her exceptional service. Either that or it was a mistake and I’ll be paying for it later.
Shieldmaiden96 — You’re right, but it was sooooo cool! So I have to tell you, two services told me I won’t get good coverage when I come to visit you next month. Do you live in a cell phone vortex or something? I was told to make my last calls to you three miles out of your town before I lose it. We’ll talk.
Chris — But do you use all that? I have to admit, I liked playing my Bejeweled game on my Treo. Like when I was in a waiting room or something. Passed the time quite nicely.
TheSnackHound — I will save it forever! And maybe hold it for Regan’s kids (if I live that long). Good idea!
Christina — Good for you making it that long without a phone. If I never needed one for work, this would have been only my second phone in 15 years. And I would have been proud.
Beth — I thought I wanted a big one, too. In fact, I thought I wanted a flip phone because then it would feel like a real phone. But I gotta tell ya, I’m loving how small my Nokia is. It’s a baby!
Judy — I feel exactly as you do. EXACTLY. And I think states should ban all cell phones in cars. You can’t tell me you’re paying attention to the guy in front of you, the people on the side of you and everything else that happens on the road when you’re talking to someone, even hands-free. You just can’t. Studies have proved it.
Bill — I love seeing how fast the technology is moving. Do you ever wonder how things will be in a short 10 years from now? I love considering the possibilities. I’d like a transporter too. Still waiting….
The Futurist Trade Show Guru Steve — My husband wants that. He actually wants his ATM card implanted in his wrist so he can just swipe that to make purchases. Hey, it could happen.

I remember the first mobile phone I ever saw. Belonged to a friend’s dad. It was bigger than my landphone at the time. It was so heavy he couldn’t really keep it in his pocket and carry it around. The battery itself was larger than a complete mobile phone of today. And it needed to be charged everytime he used it.
I never really saw the point of having that… thing. It wasn’t really a phone, and it definitely wasn’t ‘mobile’.
One primary factor for a mobile phone, I think… should be portability. It’s kind of a prerequisite.
April 14th, 2009 at 5:18 am
Momo Fali — I don’t know why, either. I found it on a shelf all by itself in the basement. So I’m guessing it was in a box and I took it out to admire it. Set it down and there it sat for 10 years. Weird.
jafer — And I’m sure he was the coolest guy on the field. So futuristic!
Will — This will be a lesson for all of us. Must take pictures of boring objects. Never know when they’ll come in handy.
Amber — An iPhone may be overwhelming at first, but it’s the kind of thing you grow into and then you’re really glad you bought all the bells and whistles.
Wiggy — A friend of mine watches video on his iPod. I remember thinking how ridiculous that was. Until I tried it and loved it. It’s amazing how good the quality of audio and video is. I never thought I’d take to it.
hammy — You bring up an interesting point. Mobile should also be light. If you have to lug a suitcase around with a phone in it, you might as well leave it at home and look for a phone booth. Remember those?

Ah yes … the cell phone. Love it. Hate it.
My one piece of advice is DO NOT give your teen-ager an unlimited cell phone. Why? My teen-age girl fell in love and spent 50 some hours/month talking to her boyfriend. It took me a couple months to notice this because we initially had tons or “roll over” minutes.
Getting her a call phone for her safety was one of the worst decisions I ever made regarding her safety.
Indoor, under-the-cover use is bad physically, especially on children and young adults. There are studies out on this. The cell phone also brings in way too much emotion for a group that tends to be a tad … compulsive?!
Keep the phones connected to the wall in the hallway of your home where everyone can listen in – like the good ‘ol days! And, get them something that needs to be recharged and will dial 911 which is what all of us really wanted in the first place.

At least it’s not as big as the cell phone the A-team used to hall around. I think back then they were called bag phones because you had to literally take it and the rest of the phone contraption around in a bag.
My first cell phone was an Audiovox from AAA back in 1998. It was pretty big, too.

Like you said… now we’ve gone to the other extreme with those micro Bluetooth ear thingys. I’ve heard rumors that they’ve made chips that will fit in your actual tooth like a filling, so you can just walk around talking with nothing hanging off your head and REALLY look crazy. I can’t wait.

I lament the good old days when cellphone could actually do damage to someone if you threw it at them…..the ones today don’t even leave a bruise.

Oh, my! Hubby had one of these when we were dating. Around 1998 (it was a castoff from his parents). He had to use it once to call them, and they yelled at him: “do you know how much this is costing?” I think it was $10 a minute, or something like that.

My first cell phone was hard wired into my car. It was a corded monster that did have a hands free option. thank goodness for that, I couldn’t have possibly driven and tried to hold that thing up to my ear. I refuse to use a bluetooth. I have a blackberry now and when the weekend rolls around I forget to take it with me. I can certainly turn the job off, when I want too.

Now the cell phones are soooo small they get lost in my purse. It takes me what seems like hours to find it. I’ve even reported my phone stolen once, and it was in my purse all along. HA!

I never know what to do with old cell phones. Somehow it seems wrong to just throw them out. I think I still have every one I’ve ever owned. lol

I’ve had my current cell phone for close to 3 years, so it’s definitely obsolete. My nieces and nephews love to look at it and reminisce about the “good old days.”
It’s fun to see old phones pop up in movies. I was watching “Pretty Woman” the other night (it’s on constantly anymore), and Richard Gere is talking on a ginormous cordless phone. Made me laugh.

I didn’t get a cell phone until 2005. I resisted them as long as I could. My first phone was a prepaid, “candy bar” style phone that kept pressing numbers by itself in my pocket. After I got cut off in the middle of a call, I finally gave in to a contract plan and got my first flip phone. I couldn’t help but think of Captain Kirk’s communicator from the 1960s Star Trek when I got that one.
I was watching the movie “Reservoir Dogs” and one guy in that movie was talking on a car phone the size of a brick in both length and width.
My current phone has a whole bunch of features on it I never use, as most of them pad your bill and eat up battery time. I just use it to talk and to sometimes take pictures. And I use the calculator some as well. That’s it.

I actually remember when cell phones were even bigger than the one you show in the photo. In a few more years they will probably be lighter and smaller.

That looks really vintage. Its functions are still used though.

The best ones were the big chunky phones that required either Hercules or a shopping trolley to carry around the charges. Man you could do some serious damage to someone with one of those phones, totally cool and retro nowadays of course
