Windy’s Birthday Party
Fun, Windy April 9th, 2009As you know, Windy had a birthday yesterday, complete with cake and balloons. Someone who saw me walking into the building with obvious party items asked me "Whose birthday is it?"
I couldn’t bear the thought of responding "A plastic bag," so I said simply "Someone special." It wasn’t really a lie, was it?
I emailed colleagues from my building to let them know they should come to my office for the cake cutting at lunch time.
But then something strange happened.
I heard a rustling coming from the cake room. A plastic kind of rustling.
Somehow Windy’s friends must have intercepted the email.

Ha ha ha ha! Oh what fun for Windy, but sad she couldn’t be at the party herself! Did somebody climb the tree with a piece of cake for her?
I thought that was a cat sitting on a guest but, looking closer, I realize it’s a black bag ha ha!

storybeader — Who knew?! Loved the cake. Delicious and weird!
Babs Beetle — It’s ironic, isn’t it? The first party ever where the honoree wasn’t there. You know, I would love to bring my black cat, Shadow, to work. She would be so quiet and not bother anyone. Except she poops in the car when we take her anywhere. Kind of a problem.
The Jillybean — I think Windy would have loved to see that all her plastic friends came to her party.
BabaBooey — Yes! And thanks for coming over for some crumbs. There’s only about a 4″ x 4″ square left now. Tomorrow it’s gone!
absepa — It was heartwarming to see who came out to celebrate her special day. Who wouldn’t love Windy?
Lori — We thought so too!
Margaret — I certainly will. And she’s shown us that she has a lot of life left in her. I don’t doubt there’ll be a 2nd birthday party in her future. Maybe next time I’ll hired a band and we’ll have dancing.
Melissa — I remember thinking after she first landed there that if she didn’t get out in the first week, she’d be there for many months. I was right.
Lin — Yeah, we had quite a mix, didn’t we? We thought it was appropriate for a recycling bin to show up, too.
audrey — So glad you liked it. We thought it was a hoot, too!
dizzblnd — Yes, humans came over the lunch hour. By then Windy’s friends had moved along. I’m just glad they left us enough cake.
Shelly — Everyone who saw it thought it was just the right amount of crazy. So far, I haven’t had to hide under my desk to avoid the orderlies.
Roxanne — Oh, absolutely. About a dozen humans showed up and there was still half a cake left this morning. I rounded up more people and demanded they come back to finish it off. Thankfully, it’s almost all gone now.
Shawn — Just when I think I’ll have nothing for a “weird list” I’ll always have Windy material.
Carmen — You’re welcome. We laughed our heads off, too. But we had to tell the bags we were laughing with them, not at them.
Daisy the Curly Cat — What a funny joke you made! My husband laughed too. You’re like a kitty Henny Youngman.
H.E. Eigler — Thank you! I’ll take that as a compliment of the highest order.
Grant — Glad that BabaBooey didn’t eat it on the way back to your office. I’m happy you could celebrate from a distance.
earthtoholly — As well they should be. Poor bags. Maybe you could at least share your dessert with them after dinner?
Chris Casey — There will be a wake, absolutely. I’m not kidding here at all. It’s going to be a very sad day. Some people asked me how I would take it if she left the tree, and I seriously think I’m going to have problems. I’ve looked at her every day for a year. You can’t give that up easily.
Ds Trout Flies — I feel a little bad that I didn’t get her a present or two. I love that this is the second comment that described where I work as a prison. It’s an ugly room, isn’t it? Windy will be a fine, upstanding adult. We’ve kept her on the strait and narrow. No worries.
DONNA — It’s OK. Roll with it. We do.
Wendy — I second that.
amber — And third that.
Marsha — I know. It’s kind of a weird phenomenon. You think “this is insane,” but then you let it go. It’s OK, really. We’ve all been there and I give you permission to care about a bag.
Michelle Gartner — There’s one big bag in the back that used to hold some kind of environmentally-friendly pellets. My coworker offered up that bag. He’s nuts. He makes his own biodiesel fuel for his car. Having a giant pellet bag in his cubicle didn’t surprise anyone. I have trouble remembering my canvas bags, too, even when I leave them in the car. Shame. I should use them more.
Grace — I do, and I’m very lucky.
castrocreations — I’m glad you liked it. We loved it too.
Toni — I’m still chuckling about it myself. They looked so cute sitting around the table with their cakes plates and forks at the ready.
Beamer — Uh, oh. I’m afraid to read it!
Maureen — What leftover cake? You know me better than that. Well, you’re one of a kind, too. I’m guessing there aren’t too many other people who would take a stuffed animal on a cross-country trip. You realize that puts you in the same category as me, right? Certifiable!

Did you ever stop to think that Windy did not need a cake. She may have wanted friendship. Their comes a time in every bags life where she has to “branch out” (lol) and meet some new bags. I have half a mind to find her hangout and and give her a new friend to hang out with.

Babs Beetle — Shadow poops in the car like clockwork. We considered putting a diaper on her, but then she’ll still be sitting in it by the time we get to the vet. Poor nervous girl!
Linda — Windy thanks you!
Alan — I’m not sure everyone here knows that you were the one who named Windy. So thank you again for that. More and more, people who know about her ask me “How’s Windy doing?” instead of “How’s the plastic bag?” Be proud of that. Windbags… hardy har har!
Jeanie — It is impressive! And I’m not sure how all those bags pulled such heavy chairs around the table themselves.
Sherry at EX Marks the Spot — I didn’t feel so weird when a colleague told me she used to get cakes for her son’s favorite stuffed animal whenever it had a birthday. I was glad to hear about another crazy person out there.
Melissa — And it would have been worth it. The cake was scrumptious, and then you could have said “I saw Windy in person!”
DrowseyMonkey — You can come work with me, but we’d never get any work done. We’d be laughing our heads off until we got fired. I’m glad you thought “It couldn’t be” because it be.
Mr. New Dilemma — Oh, please don’t make me feel guilty. I feel bad enough I didn’t get her a card or any presents. I should have at least thrown her a piece of cake, but how much you wanna bet it would have landed on me on the way down?
Chris — Yep, you got it right. All aboard the crazy train! And I take that as a compliment. Nothing makes me happier than to give my readers a laugh or two.

I was touched and honored to share in Windy’s birthday celebration. It occurs to me, though, that the obligatory first birthday picture, complete with icing and other cake-related residue covering the one year old’s face, never materialized.
Too bad, but then, climbing to tree to reach Windy may have proven to be a bit harmful to your life and limb, no matter how humorous to your colleagues!
April 10th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I can’t believe that I’m going to say this, but I’m a little jealous of Windy. I only got one cake in the 4.5 years that I worked at my last job, and the turn out wasn’t nearly as good. People just took their slice and ran. No one sat around a table with me. Windy’s a lucky girl…I mean bag.
Do you think it would have helped if I had hung upside down in a tree for a year?

Dorothy Stahlnecker — Amen, sister! And have a nice weekend yourself.
Trade Show Guru Steve — I’m glad it started your day off right. See how cake (even virtual) makes everything better?
John J Savo, the Authoring Auctioneer — In all honesty, it will be very sad. I’m in such a habit of checking for her whenever I pass a window that faces her tree. I seriously do not know what I will do. It wouldn’t surprise me if I cried.
Melissa K — I’ll never know. Either they’re in on it too, or they make fun of me as soon as they walk away. I choose to believe they’re with me on this.
Pricilla — I do! I only had one coworker remark that I might need some therapy, and it wasn’t over Windy. It was over this.
grannyann — No doubt. I just wish there had been some way to convey to her how many bags and people came out to celebrate her special day.
Monique — God, woman! I thought I’d never see you again! So glad you’re back in business. And you really didn’t think I’d get sane since I heard from you last, did you?
Anna — No, they were quite a reserved bunch. No singing, just quiet clinking of forks.
Wiggy — For the record, Windy is a she. I’ll forgive you that mistake just this once, though. Windy didn’t have any family there (no Walmart bags), but she had plenty of other celebrants from grocery and shoe stores.
BabaBooey — Yeah, I know. It would have been nice to have a shot of Windy in her high chair ready to blow out her candle. And should would have loved to get the very first piece all over herself. Hmmm, I could have asked you to climb the tree. Missed opportunity. I bet you would have done it.
Staci — Oh, don’t make me cry. That’s so sad. People should at least stay and say a few words if they’re given a piece of yummy free cake, don’t you think? I mean, there is a cake etiquette here.
Judy — I like to think that Windy knows how fond I and others are of her. It’s the least I could have done.
April 10th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Steve — I used to get more looks in the beginning, when Windy was first stuck. Now that more people are interested in her, I’ve become sort of a goddess. OK, maybe not a goddess. But I don’t get the eye rolls anymore.
Ferd — Har! I love how this post brought out the Henny Youngman in everyone.
darksaturn7 — LMAO. Very funny.
Emily — I’m glad you guys enjoyed this. Some of my Windy posts get linked at places where people don’t understand the humor in it. Boo on them!
Mike Foster — Windy’s feelin’ the love. Thanks!
staciesmadness — She really is. And I think we’re all beyond thinking it makes us mental for caring about her. It’s a good thing.
P.L. Frederick — Even when Windy disintegrates entirely (pains me to think of it), she’ll live long in our memories, won’t she?
Mark — I can’t believe I never looked this up until now. Seems estimates run from 500 years to a thousand. You’re right. I see a lot more cake purchases in my future.
Joe — There will never be another one like it. I’ll just have to make the next one even better. Band? Open bar?
Lilaphase — That’s so funny you said that. I do feel like a parent, in a mental off-my-rocker kind of way. Yes, next year we’ll have presents and maybe I’ll record a few words to mark the occasion.

Skitto, Peanut and Momma Jodi — Thank you for the birthday wishes. Windy would be touched.
The Hawg! — It’s a little of both, actually, but more of the latter. People are used to the bag now (and me, too)!
Natural — Honestly? She has more than I do, too. I’m not sure whether she’s had a falling out with her family. No other Walmart bags showed up. Hmmm. The cake was marble and delicious. Love me some buttercream icing, too!
Hicham — All of the other bags who joined Windy at one time or another have flown the coop. She remains alone again. She’ll get a wake when and if she leaves, but I’m guessing it’ll be another year at least before that happens.
