Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcakes!
Fun, food August 22nd, 2009I recently discovered the coolest book called Hello, Cupcake! In it is the cutest assembly of fun and whimsical cupcakes you can make easily with regular store-bought cake, icing, cookies and candies.
Here is my first attempt at making something completely non-cupcakey — spaghetti and meatballs!
First you make regular vanilla cupcakes. Then tint vanilla icing with a bit of yellow food coloring for the pasta. Use a Ziplock bag to squeeze the "pasta" out all over the cupcakes. Go crazy!
Top with Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolates dipped in low-sugar strawberry preserves for the meatballs. Finish with grated white chocolate for the parmesan cheese.
Are these not awesome?!
Hungry for a little Italian tonight?
If you have a sweet tooth, these are for you. They are scrumptious! A mess to eat, but who cares? They’re cupcakes! Or are they?
Stumble it!

I am presently waiting for a home delivery of several of the above works of art. Kathy called me, told me to check out her latest post, and voila…soon I will be the proud owner of one of these delightful creations. Wait….is that the doorbell… And bonus…I’m first to post!!

ann of the junkdrawerblogfamily — So did Regan and her friends like them? I sort of wanted Don to walk into the kitchen thinking I’d brought pasta. Anytime I make a whole batch, you’re welcome to half so we don’t eat them all.
Drowsey Monkey — Well, I did have to buy the cupcake pan. I didn’t have that just laying around. Also needed a small spatula to use for scraping icing down the side of the Ziplock bag. I’m not as equipped as it might look.
LOBO — For now. The new management seems to know what they’re doing and running the ship like it used to be. That was what got me thinking about rejoining.
Jaffer — Ann lamented that it was impossible to email them to her. I would send you a plateful if I could.
Melissa k — You really must get the book. I doubted that they were as easy to make as the author insists. But they were! No slaving in the kitchen all day! And squeezing the “pasta” out of the bag was the highlight. Felt like art class without rules!
Alan — Hey, be glad I know how to spell spaghetti.
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — My mouth watered on cue when I gave some to my sister. They’re so good! Tasty as they look.
Annie — It’s weird because you’d think it’d be gross to taste preserves with the icing, but it’s fine. Not so sweet that you can’t stand it. Thank you for the award. I’m a fan of that Lucy episode too. Who isn’t?
redlkathy — I’m amazed the chocolates look so much like meatballs. When my sister was about to cut one in half with a fork, as though it were meat, I told her not to try or it was going to go flying across the room. They’re freaky realistic.
Jeff — Watch where you say it, dude. You might get punched in the face. But, yeah, they’re so good you could…
Babs Beetle — I know! I think I’m a better baker and now apparently, food designer, than I thought. I guess I lucked out with the timing of my EC registration.
Shieldmaiden1196 — Look at me! First homemade pasta and now this! I know that litterbox recipe. Never had the guts (or stomach) to make it. How’d it go over?
Beth — Yeah, when I was taking pictures I thought “Boy, a nice loaf of French bread would look really good with these.” Thanks for the idea. This won’t be the last time I make them.
Jaffer — And thanks to Jeff’s comment, I won’t be looking at these the same way again.
tahtimbo — Me neither! The book is awesome. There’s also an idea for a TV dinner. Mashed potatoes, veggies, everything. So fun!
JS — I hate my camera. I must have taken 30 shots to get only a few good ones. Doesn’t the closeup look realistic?
Barb WillThink4Wine — At first, it feels weird to eat chocolate with preserves on it, but it’s really good. The problem is it’s kind of messy. Suitable for eating over the kitchen sink.
Katie — No kidding! I’d love to make these for a party sometime and not tell anyone what they are at first. The book author actually puts this recipe in their April Fool’s chapter.
Daisy the Curly Cat — I would give you a little bite, but only a little. I know you’re watching your waistline so you can keep fitting into your fashions. You looked lovely today in the Sunday Comics!
Cromely — Yep, it’d be a real downer to get sweet when you wanted carbs and protein. Although, drunk, I’d eat anything.
Chris Casey — They were delicious too. {mouth waters again} We ate three, kept three and gave the others to my sister. Trying to resist the urge to eat one for breakfast.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:08 am

Rene — Not this Monday, but some Monday and you’ll be the first to know I’ve brought them in. Do you mean I’m missing a cupcake? That sole meatball was in the recipe and placed that way in the example picture. I followed it to a T.
Data Entry Services — She’d do great with the book then. There are some things I wouldn’t attempt, like the horse cupcakes. Yes, horse cupcakes. Your daughter might be able to pull them off, though.
JD at I Do Things — If you make the TV dinner, please blog about it. I want to see how the come out. The peas and carrots look adorable in the book.
Elisha — Oh no! Not a fan of eating something that only looks like meat? They were really delicious and if you can get past the mental aspect of expecting carbs and protein and getting sweet instead, you’re in for a nice surprise.
Phyl — They were nummy! See my remark to Elisha.
Donna — I have to say I’m pretty pleased with myself. I was worried they wouldn’t come out at ALL like the picture in the book, but they did. If you lived closer, I’d have brought you some.
Regan — Tell your mom to buy you the book and I’ll come down and whip some up with you. I want to make the corn on the cob ones some day.
Kacey — It is a little disturbing, but that’s part of the fun of eating them. Totally messes with your head. If I can make these, anyone can. I’ve written about my problems in the kitchen many times before. I didn’t have high hopes for these, but I did good!
absepa — Thank you. Yes, get the book. It’s inexpensive and really fun to leaf through, even if you don’t make any. And trust me. They’re really easy make. I wouldn’t lie about that. I saw two other kinds of Rocher chocolates, I’m sure one was the dark.
Jay — You’re not the only one who’s thinks they’re just not right. After the first one, you get past the feeling.
Di — They are! You should see the corn on the cob ones in the book. Now THAT’S crazy!
Jenny — Ruh-roh. Please tell me it was all smoke and no fire! Sorry dinner was ruined, but thankful your house is OK. Will you ever cook again? Yes, I’d love to take the cupcakes to an event and see the reactions. Surrounded by bread and cheese, it’s possible to fool someone, if only for a second.
Cats~Goats~Quotes — As for the next masterpiece, JD of I Do Things has the same book. I’m begging her to blog about the TV dinner she plans to make. It’ll be really cool because you serve them in aluminum foil tins, just like a TV dinner.

grannyann — It is, except the next time I’m taking them OUT OF THE HOUSE. I ate too much today Muh belleh hurts.
Lin — What gives? New management. New AND BETTER management. You get over the cupcake confusion pretty fast. The only thing bad about them is you can’t possibly eat them like a regular cupcake. It goes in a bowl and you eat it with a fork.
Wendy — Yes, they are most definitely doable. I’ll try my hand at other things and post my creations. Even if they come out bad. Especially if they come out bad.
ann — Har! It doesn’t compute, does it?
Chris — The thought of that makes me ill. Although cake is almost bread, isn’t it? And bread goes with pasta, so I could totally do it.
Leeuna — I can too. And we did! Only one left (my sister took half)

People’s aversion to this reminds me of St. Patrick’s Day, many years ago, when our youth group had a potluck where everything was green. And several people just couldn’t get past the look of things, even though the taste didn’t change at all.

Jenn Thorson — Bummer on the cookies. I think it’s worse thinking something will be sweet, then it’s not, rather than vice versa. No fair!
Phyl — See, now that would gross me out. At least my cupcakes still looked like another food in its true color. I expect those people were told to close their eyes and just roll with it.
HUGE-sweet-tooth-trade-show-guru-Steve — It is humanly possible. They totally beat the strawberries on the sweet scale. You would have loved them!
Anne — I marveled at how perfectly the chocolates looked like meatballs. They have a nice bumpy texture. Incidentally, I thought of you when I took a thousand pictures of the food for the blog. I thought “How does Anne DO this?”
Shinade — For the record, I didn’t do as good a job with the “pasta” as I could have. Next time I have to refrigerate the icing longer so the strands stay firm. For now, I’m happy to be back with EC, but if they mess up again, I’m outta there.
Jude — So am I. Really bad. But I’m a decent baker, which I consider a world different than cooking.
Regan – Look in your mailbox in a few days.
Lisa — They’d never survive the trip. I barely got them to my sister’s in one piece and she’s only 15 minutes away from me. BUT! I’d make them with you there! It’d be a hoot!
Buggys — They’re both fun to make and very tasty. Your granddaughter will love them, guaranteed! And thank you for the nice award. Appreciate it.

Momo Fali — They are. I’m so pleased how they came out. It’s the kind of thing kids would love to make. You know. Kids. Like me.

Henrietta — They’d make a great April Fool’s joke. It’d be fun just to watch the reactions. “Oh, we’re having pasta?!” Um. No.
Shelly — I wanted to put a bottle of red wine next to it for the picture, but we didn’t have any. White zinfandel doesn’t go with pasta, does it? Hmmm, does it matter?
Blane — Please do! It really is simple. I seriously doubted that, but I was done with everything in like 30 minutes. Cripes, the picture-taking took longer!
Christine — I’m glad they resembled the picture in the book. Of course, if they didn’t, I would have blogged about them anyway. Good for a laugh, no doubt.
