How to Make Sure People Find Your House
Bizarre September 5th, 2009It would be so much easier directing people to my house if I had one of these. "Pull in at the seven foot bird."
When my husband and I parked outside this house to take pictures, I’m pretty sure no one wondered why.
Polly want a cracker? No? How ’bout some junk mail?
Stumble it!

A couple of miles from the town (on the outskirts of Houston) where I live is another little town called Kemah, right on Galveston Bay. In that little town, a number of business have adopted the same statue of pelicans (about this size) that they’ve painted in ways indicative of their businesses and displayed. It’s really rather interesting.
If I took pictures worth a crap, I could take pictures and show you.

Way back when, when I lived in S.F., I had to walk my dog on a leash on the city streets. Sometimes we would pass houses that had one of those lions at the front gate. You know the ones that usually have one paw raised up in some sort of greeting or something? Well occasionally my dog would give them sideways looks and a low growl as we walked by. I can’t imagine what he would have done if we had come across one of these!

It’s too bad, because the house and grounds are so pretty! In certain areas of Broward county, it’s popular to have a big gray manatee mailbox. Luckily, in our community the mailboxes were installed by the builder and they all match, and they are maintained (repainted and such) by the HOA.

Using my skills of deductions I have a vague idea of where you reside. Knowing your distaste of extensive travel, this leads me to believe this parrot is located close to where you live. Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — Manatees scare me. I don’t know why. I’ve never seen a real one.
Crabby Blogging Lady — And birds, and squirrels and probably visitors.
Alan — I know. It doesn’t quite “go” does it?
Barb WillThink4Wine — I’m guessing they have a bird motif inside. I wonder how many parrots they have squawking in there.
Moonshadow — Got that right. I can’t imagine that bird getting a green light. It’s kinda neat, but the size of it?
Stephanie Barr — That does sound cool. Come on, won’t you take one picture for me?
C.B. Jones — I agree. It makes an excellent scarecrow of sorts. The closer I got to it, the more scairt I got!
Babs Beetle — I can’t either. Everyone else has lovely little mailboxes and then there’s that.
Jeff — Ha! If I’d thought about it enough, I’d have taken crackers with me, put ‘em inside and ran!
Mamaflo — From a block away. Can’t miss it.
Flo — I knew somebody would want one. It really is kind of neat, and I love the colors, but it doesn’t go at all with the neighborhood.
amber — Now that would be something to see. Even if all the mailman delivered was bills, you’d still be smilin’.
Jerilyn Mckinley — Remember when all you could get was a black box on a post?
JC — Yes, this is the Rolls Royce of mailboxes. Can’t top it. So what’s the weirdest mailbox in your neighborhood?
MikeWJ — I imagine for a time the neighbors couldn’t even look out their windows at it. But I bet they’ve learned to love it. OK, maybe tolerate it.
Will — You would have lost your dog forever. Can you imagine what this thing looks like at night? Creepy!
Cromely — I thought the positioning of the box was bad myself. Yes, mail should go in its mouth. Once you start giving “turn at the cow” directions, you can never get rid of the cow. Moo!
Daisy the Curly Cat — Some of the houses and landscaping nearby are even more gorgeous than this property. I always wonder what the homeowners do for a living to afford it. My whole house could fit in their garages. What’s with the manatee mailboxes?
Data Entry Services — Yep. It’s a striking difference. I’m all about being unique, but yikes!
Momo Fali — Agreed. I’m curious about what the inside of the house looks like. If they’re not afraid to show off their taste in mailboxes, I wonder what else is unique in there. If I’d had the guts, I’d have knocked on the door and asked them what possessed them to adorn their yard with a parrot on steroids.
Sherry at EX Marks the Spot — Yes! See above. So tempting, but Dave would have never let me walk up and ask.
jafer — I knew there’d be some of you who’d love it!
Donna — This house is in Emmaus. Not in my neighborhood. I dare you to duplicate it. It’d make a nice painting project for your kids, though.
Mike — There was one other house nearby that I figure was twice the size of this place, if you can believe it. It was a sprawling mansion on the top of a hill. With a normal mailbox.
Elisha — Aw, I think the koala mailbox must be cute. It’s not 7 feet tall, is it?
Karen at Blazing Minds — Believe me, this is incredibly unusual. In my whole life I’ve never seen anything so big. We do have some concrete ones, but they’re tasteful and boxy. Not cartoony and scary. A poodle! Yes!
JD at I Do Things — We think alike because the first thing I thought was that it could eat small children.
Carla — Ha! I was thinking of that! Wouldn’t it look a sight adorned in Christmas lights?
September 6th, 2009 at 11:25 am

Grace — I pity the poor pink flamingo. So disparaged. Maybe only when they’re found inland. I expect they look nice in balmy places.
Maureen — I’m sorry to hear you don’t have home delivery. Some of the condos near me have big banks of mailboxes where they pickup their mail. We’re lucky we still have door to door service.
Jen — Don’t be so sure people wouldn’t like it. Also, I think it might make a nice crime deterrent.
DrowseyMonkey — I can just imagine his reaction the first time he had to deliver there. “It goes where?”
Rofl Stuffz — I’d take the house. Skip the mailbox.
Tracy — They’re probably workin’ on it.
Karen — The goose is your mailbox? We don’t have much to identify our house, save for the 10 foot tall grass bush thingy. I really need something like this because my house looks exactly like the two houses on either side of us.
muskrat — “Friendly” and “muskrat” don’t go together much, do they? Aren’t they kind of ferocious? Or am I thinking of a badger? Hell, I don’t know my rodents.
Chris Casey — A dinosaur mailbox sounds cool. You can get any mailbox you want, I’m sure. If money’s no object.
Jay – Yep. Concrete. It’ll last forever.
Regan — I know. It makes ours seem downright boring. Certainly not picture-taking worthy.
tahtimbo — I have to admit it’s so colorful, how can it not make you smile? Though I imagine it looks even more out of place when it snows.
Lin — I hate neighbors too. Except for the one who mows our lawn without even asking. Luckily we don’t have garbage-stacking neighbors. I’m sorry you do.
Jennifer Landsberger — I love it too! Especially the closeup on its face. He’s cute, ain’t he?
Ladybugg — I’m afraid it’s a man-eating parrot too. Aw, I’d like a doggy mailbox. I don’t see any of those around here. Just fish.
Geakz — And that’s why it’s made of concrete.
Rochelle — I know!
DJ — AAARRRR, matey!

It’s not really as cute as it could be… sort of… dated, or something… It’s about a foot and a half tall, I’d say, and it’s even moulded with it’s own bit of ‘tree’ to hang onto. It’s really an ugly cement looking sculpture. ^-^

The publicist moved to a barrier island off of New Jersey when she was 12. As it grew in popularity the northern end (where the rich folk lived) started building highly architectural (ie: ugly) houses. Then they started competing to put out the most unusual mailbox. I bet that it really doesn’t benefit them like you think. They are sponged off of by their neighbors who use the mailbox to give directions to THEIR houses.
“If you pass the giant Macaw, you’ve gone too far.”
“We are the first white house after that big bird.”
And so on and so forth.
Because the neighborhood is getting so much use from it, they should charge their neighbors a certain percentage that diminishes the farther the neighbor lives from the bird. Except the people on the next block behind would get it because they probably tell people “its NOT the block with the bird on it, but the NEXT one.”
You know, you have to pay for upkeep.

I need one of these! I live in one of those neighbourhoods, washing the cars on sunday, mowing the laws, bbqs, everybody working by the same schedule.
How wonderful to have a giant parrot guarding the entrance and becoming a beacon of difference and originality

I will never let a big macaw like the one in the post hang around in front of my yard. A small letter box would do.
