Nice Try, Spell Checker
Bizarre, work October 8th, 2009Don’t we have enough to worry about with the people in our lives thinking they know what’s better for us?
Now software wants to get into the act?
My sister Marlene emailed this to me today. It’s a screen snapshot of a co-worker’s Lotus Notes program.
The screen shot came attached with a note: “Things just aren’t making a whole lot of sense today.”
No kidding.
What’s the matter, brainless program whose opinion wasn’t asked for? Not feelin’ the 16th vibe?
Kinda like ordering surf ‘n turf and getting a salad.
Thanks. But no.
Stumble it!

Same sentiments!! I never use spell checkers. I am highly suspicious of the education of the data entrants, because if the word I’m using is too “archaic” to even BE in the spell check, then the word isn’t even correct! They still can’t get “children’s” right. HAHA!

I think that it denies the 16th because that’s the day the software’s boyfriend broke up with it.
October 8th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Seriously?! Perhaps the spellchecker thinks the 16th is some kind of holiday and therefore shouldn’t be used.

Dumbass stupid software.

I absolutely positively NEVER depend on spell check; it’s dangerous. After all, it only checks to see if you spelled something correctly. If I can’t find someone else to proof it, I’ll check it myself umpteen times. Had a superintendent of schools once whose secretary depended on spell check; can you guess what you get when you leave the “l” out of public? Yep, a completely different yet correctly spelled word…whoops! (fun post
)

Rebecca — Yeah, I’m annoyed more and more about what’s not in the dictionary already. Some rejections are just silly. As you said, children’s should be listed. (Incidentally, Firefox thinks that’s wrong too). And congrats on being this post’s first commenter!
Regan — Could be. “She” must still be in mourning.
Pricilla — I was going to suggest that it just didn’t like even numbers, but then it went and picked 14. So that blows that theory.
storybeader — Yeah, like showing up two days late for a meeting. “Uh. Lotus Notes didn’t want me to come until now.” I’m sure everyone would understand.
kathryn — I’ve called more than one software title a dumbass, but you’re right. You gotta play nice or it could turn on you. I never say bad things about Wordpress because it could wake up one day and beat my blog to death with a tire iron. I’m scared.
The Mother — Well, then. We should thank Lotus Notes. I’m glad it’s looking out for us. I think.
nettagyrl — I thought so too. Kept looking at it and snickering.
Babs Beetle — Oh, I forgot! You wouldn’t want that, now would you? I say ditch your American dictionary. I like how you spell better anyway. When I type humour, colour and characterise, Firefox complains a lot.
Heather — I got up this morning, made my coffee, thought how tired I was and said to myself “At least I’m not Heather with a paper due by midnight. Wonder if she finished.” Good Lord, woman, you like living on the edge, don’t you?
Grace — Something else Anything but the 16th, apparently.
Knucklehead — Are you serious? That’s funny.
cardiogirl — Hilarious! Yeah, who needs attitude from software? It’s like Hal in 2001 A Space Odyssey. “Open the pod bay doors, HAL. I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Geesh. Lotus Notes is a chick who was wronged and is taking it out on everyone she meets.
Daisy the Curly Cat — It would! And if it did, I’d be asking for another email program to use, PRONTO!
Jen — Google is coming out with something called Wave, that will check for spelling in context, which is sorely needed. Too many people rely on spell check. Oh, and I showed someone how to avoid the public/pubic thing once. I added “pubic” to a list of words that whenever the user typed it, it would automatically get changed to “public.” This was safe to do, because there was never any reason she’d type the former word in her job.
October 9th, 2009 at 5:48 am
Though I’m sometimes thankful for the spell checker in Word – it can sure be a nuisance. You are right, we are pawns!

I have very little use for spell check–it seems like I spend more time fighting its annoying tendencies than getting useful information from it. Plus, as some other commenters noted, you can’t always trust it. I’ve seen some pretty embarrassing typos result from too much reliance on spell check.

Spellcheck is handy for catching my typos, since I never learned to type correctly, and my 4 fingers and a thumb style often gets an extra letter in there.
My husband is notorious for his homonym misuse, for which spellcheck is no good, of course.

I’m with Babs on the American spelling thing. I’m always ignoring the spellcheck on those. A friend of mine publishes the local newspaper, and I’m always giving him a bad time about his editor relying on the spellcheck too often. Came across the term “rouge vampires” recently in the paper. Hmn.. But the number thing? That’s just plain bizarre. Maybe its 16th birthday was like mine (everyone ate the cake while I was at band practice. Long, sad tale of woe), and it wants to block it out of its subconscious?

Data Entry Services — I’m thankful for it in email, since that’s where I spell the worst. Typing too fast!
Elisha — I never worked with Lotus Notes. I know so few people who do. Must be a corporate things.
AuntiE — That would have been funny. A superstitious email program!
BabaBooey — You had me going there. But I’m tired, so I get a pass.
Buggys — If he didn’t, he probably will. Hell, computers are going to rule our lives eventually. Oh, wait. I think the already do.
absepa — Line up for that Google Wave thing. It’ll help you not only spell correctly, but it’ll check for spelling in the context of what you’re writing. It’ll save us all.
Linda — And it’s not only thinking, it’s probably mocking what I wear to work every day. I used to work in an accounting department, and for some reason, that word always came out as “accoconut.” Why?
Allegria — I feel bad now for all the non-American spelling people here. I feel lucky to have at least a checker that knows how I want to write. I’m so sorry everyone at your birthday cake. That’s inexcusable and I want to know more of the story. Here, have a tissue.
CatLadyLarew — Seriously.
Erica — That’s a good a reason as any. Maybe it wanted to relive one of the best days of its life?
Jude — I gotta tell you, that search feature saves me ten times a day. But that’s because I’m a lazy speller these days.
earthtoholly — Never! I hope humans keep ruling the planet as long as I’m alive. Remember Hal from Space Odyssey.
Babs Beetle — Ask The Google. The Google will know. Oh, wait. Try this.
redkathy — I love your creative explanation. It’s always alcohol, isn’t it?
Jen — I keep forgetting about “Add to dictionary” or I’m just lazy.
April — Bastard!
Deb — I actually prefer you spelling of words like favourite. And humour. Sorry you have to always fight with it.
ann — Oh, no. Let’s make it $100,000.
Bryan – Really.
Nanny Goats — And that’s probably why we don’t use it. It’s probably on someone’s software analysis spreadsheet labeled “This is dumb.”
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — Tee hee! Can you imagine, though, if there was no spell check at all? We’d totally butcher the language since no one would even try to fix themselves.

My program auto-corrects to the word most used within a catagory from each major document. If I wrote a memo about a meeting on the 12th, then type up a letter for a party on the 16th, my program will suggest the 12th just in case my mind forgot what date I was writing about. What bugs me? No matter how many times I add my name “kati” to the dictionary, I also have to confirm my name as correct.
