I’m All For Eco-Friendly, But Geez….
Stuff I hate, food January 30th, 2010Has anyone bought Sun Chips in the new eco-friendly bag? Ay-carumba!
They are touted as the first of their kind to be “100% compostable.” That’s great, but they’re loud as hell!
I Googled the issue and found a few discussion boards where people left the following comments:
I swear it’s capable of waking the dead if you so much as breath in its general direction, much less actually touch it or reach inside to get a chip.
Just curious about other’s comments on this ear-splitting bag. Is a fully compostable bag worth it if everyone within 1/2 mile knows you’re eating Sun Chips?
My wife was asleep upstairs and I opened the bag in the kitchen and it literally woke her up. Man that bag is loud!
Well, at least the neighbors know you are engaging in the proper consumption of said “Sun Chips”. Next time you go out and pick up your mail just say you had an excellent dip experience.
Sounds like a car crash whenever I go to grab a chip.
I’m all about snacking, but I’d like to do it in peace. Does everyone have to know I’m off my diet?
Have a listen…..
Stumble it!

Whoa! What is that bag made out of? It’s like they TRIED to make it that loud. Criminy.
Coincidentally, I had SunChips last night, but they were in a normal bag, not a wake-the-dead bag.

No more sneaking Sun Chips, I guess.

Hey, early commenters! I changed the video. I filmed myself and you even get to see my cat Shadow in the background at the kitchen sink where she always is, looking for water. I posted about her obsession a little while ago, so now you know I’m not kidding.
Christine — And don’t you want to just punch them? If anyone even thinks of eating out of this kind of bag in a theater, they’re dead meat.
Surfie — I think someone suggested it’s cellophane. Annoying, huh? Enjoy the last of the quiet bags. You’re gonna hate these new ones.
JD — Yes, I WAS disgusted. Like “Out damn chips and stop giving me a headache!” No. No sneaking ever again. I think it’s a ploy to get the country to lose collective weight.

I think we better get use to the idea of compostable packaging. We need it. Hopefully technology will provide us with a bag that has an air-tight seal and doesn’t wake the dead when we touch it. In the meantime I applaud the Sun Chip people for their efforts. We think nothing of throwing our packaging into our landfills, but we really should start thinking and demanding compost friendly packaging. I cringe every time I take meat off a Styrofoam tray. Wish I could afford to shop at the corner butcher store, he uses old-fashioned waxed freezer-wrap paper. I for one am willing to live with the noise in favor of packaging that lives forever.

I like the new video even more. I can barely hear you speaking over the noise of that stupid bag! I feel the need to rush out to the store to see if I can find this new bag and compare it to the noise from a regular bag. We need someone with one of those dB meters so we can scientifically measure the difference in the noise levels between these two bags. Maybe if you contact Sun Chips about the noisy bag they’ll send you some coupons!

Daisy — Sorry about your ears! I laughed when I watched the video right after taking it. Yep, there’s Shadow in the sink, looking for water. See? I told you she’s always there!
Blog Angel — I love the idea of this kind of packaging. I think it’s supposed to fully decompose in 14 weeks (in a hot compost pile). One thing I try to do is not even take packaging whenever possible. The first thing on the motto “Reduce, reuse, recycle” is REDUCE. So that’s what I try and do. I won’t be buying Sun Chips anymore, though. Yikes!
JD at I Do Things — Don’t worry. The next time I vlog, I won’t have a noisy bag in front of me and I’ll have a better camera. And thank you for the lovely compliment. You know how scairt I was to film myself.
Pricilla — Still sorry you couldn’t get sound. I’m not sure what else to suggest. Maybe try going directly to the YouTube link?
Spicybugs — My husband and I are trying to out-annoy each other with the bag. It’s truly insane. Good idea, in theory.
earthtoholly — Yeah, you can’t possibly snack under the radar with this bag. The whole house would hear you. And even if you hide in the garage, I think the noise would penetrate the walls. (And thanks for the compliment!)
Cromely — Yeah, but that would take 14 weeks! “Unimpeded chip access.” Love that!
Surfie — You MUST go check out the bag. I was hyper-aware of the noise even in the store. I laughed when I put it past the checkout scanner and it was already crinkling and I hadn’t opened it yet. It’s truly bizarre. The noise is deafening. I’m telling you. Gotta go sound test to see for yourself.
Jen — Yes, exactly.
CatLadyLarew — It’s such a great idea, though. They’re on the right track. But no way am I ever buying those again. I fear they’ll make the snack bags the same material. Forget it. If you tried eating out of one at your desk, your co-workers would beat you senseless.
Buggys — I try to at least reuse my Ziplocs. They’re very sturdy and can hold up to rinsing out. Saves me money too.
Babs Beetle — Ha! Yep, that’s me all right. The ‘ol bag needs to go. No way am I buying them again. I did write the company and I know others have too, based on my research. They have to do something about it.

Lin — I keep crinkling it really loud downstairs, while my husband screams at me from upstairs to stop. Most. Annoying. Bag. Ever!
absepa — Please tell your pups I’m sorry! It also makes my skittish cat run for the hills. I think he’s going to need therapy now.
Crabby Blogging Lady — Four bucks. Worth every penny just to hear it. That’s funny that I seem to have an accent. I never knew I had one. No one ever thinks they do.
Video Guy — Yeah, just when you thought chips couldn’t get any worse. If they start making their snack bags out of that material, people are going to get punched eating them around anyone. It’s intolerable when you’re eating alone! Can’t imagine anyone eating in the presence of others.
Jeff — I would love that. I wish you didn’t live in the middle of the country. Can’t you just take a quick 12 hour jaunt over in my direction? You can bring any other kind of chip. But better hurry. If other companies jump on this bandwagon, we’ll never be able to eat chips again.
amy lilley — I swear it’s even louder than the video shows. The audio on that camera isn’t so great. It’s ear-piercing.
ann of the junkdrawerblogfamily — I don’t understand why no one on the development team thought this would be an issue. Or did they just think people would get over it? Guess what? We ain’t gettin’ over it.
Crazy Working Mom — Get ‘em while they’re still quiet. I think they’re rolling the new bag out in different areas. They’ve been making these bags for over six months now and I just now saw them. So you might be able to still buy the quiet kind in your area. But hurry!
Sheila — Anti-commercial for sure. I do love the chips themselves, just not the cacophony that comes with eating them.
Lola — Absolutely. I’m not kidding when I say you can hear the bag all throughout the house. There is NO sneaking around with this thing.
Nanny Goats — Sorry! That was sort of the point, but I basically was screaming how loud they were. I’ll do better next time. Don’t ya just want to run out and buy a bag now?
Sparkle — Aw, you spotted her! She’s the one who is always at the sink looking for the water to be turned on. I cracked up when I watched the video later. It’s no surprise she made an appearance, though. Half her waking hours are in that sink.
Barb at WillThink4Wine — Huh! What!? LMAO.

I saw that cat walking on the counters too. My cats know that is the one place they can’t go. Unfortunately they also think that when we are not home, they are getting away with it. So we just can’t leave things like tomatoes or cantelopes out or the cats will chew on them.
I am all for compostable bags, but would want to know what the bags actually break down into. I remember a plastic bag that was touted as compostable when really it was just a regular plastic bag that broke down into minute pieces that appeared to disappear. It was found that this bag, when broken down in the ocean where many bags end up, dissolved into small pieces of plastic that look like plankton and other small organisms to fish and other sea life. Some creatures are actually starving to death with stomachs full of this plastic.

Marg — Apparently, this video is scaring pets all over the country. And the sink is where we find Shadow 50% of her day. It makes it really hard to get anything done in the kitchen. Just sayin’.
Linda — The crunch is pretty loud, come to think of it, but not as loud as the bag, which rips my face off every time I crinkle it.
Data Entry Services — It’s impossible to sneak some. Impossible.
SuziCate — Yeah, you’re not going to be able to eat these alone unless you get rid of the bag all together. Otherwise, people and dogs will gather from far and wide. Be prepared.
MyMommyDrama — Nope. Your best bet is to dump the chips into another container before you even enter the house. Leave the bag outside. It has no business being indoors where people with ears are.
Will — We have not been very successful training our cat not to jump on the sink. We leave lots of things out in her path, but she’s very nimble and simply walks around them. It’s a losing battle. Interesting about the bags you mentioned. Everyone wants to get on the eco bandwagon, but there ought to be a regulatory body who makes sure they really do break down into truly compostable parts. OK, according to their website, the bags are truly compostable: All about their bags. See page 2, where they talk about the differences between biodegradable, degradable and compostable. So I think they get a thumbs up here. (Noise aside).
Laura Hegfield — But at least you don’t need a cup of coffee then. These will wake you up!
brookeamanda — Yesterday I cut half the bag off the top so I could more easily access the chips. It was much quieter that way. I like the Garden Salsa flavor, too!
Barbara Swafford — Eating straight out of the bag will be a thing of the past, at least with these. Hmmm, maybe I’ll eat less if I dole out just some onto a plate. This might actually help me.
MA Fat Woman — Oh, that’s good to hear! I’m a little bit heavier than my profile pic. Worried about taping myself, but thought, what the hell? Thank you. You made my day!
cat lady diary — Shadow cares not a bit about the bag. It’s actually our male cat, Lucky, who’s going to need therapy because of it.
meleah rebeccah — Yep, it’s the first I’ve ever put up on the blog. See my link in the comment to Will for an explanation about the bag’s makeup. Yes, I’m going to have to ditch the bag, but I like eating straight from the bag! So much for that.
Julie — Thank you! I didn’t even notice Shadow the first time I watched it. I laughed when I did. Good for you on composting. I have a coworker who does it too. I think I’m too lazy for that. I should probably give the bag to him and see just how long it takes to break down. The company says it takes 14 days.
Mike WJ at Too Many Mornings — Yes, get a bag (or at least touch one at the store). You won’t believe the racket. If you take one to church, even God will ask you to take it outside.
Over Paintball — Go get some, but wear ear phones.

Auntie E — Maybe this is all a sinister plan to keep kids from over-snacking. It’s really a brilliant idea.
meleah rebeccah — You’re right. I don’t know anyone who takes chips out of a bag and eats out of a bowl. Except maybe at a party. But in the comfort of my own home, alone, I’m all about digging right in with my hands.

Dan — I wonder, too. They are getting complaints in various places. This is their first effort at eco-friendly-izing bags, so maybe they’ll take the complaints into consideration when designing new bags. One could hope.

Thanks for the heads-up on Sun Chips’ compostable bag. For one thing, the idea of any kind of bag decomposing in a mound of grass clippings puts me off. More importantly, the sonic attributes you describe mean that Sun Chips must be crossed off any future snack-resupply list. The reason should be obvious: like most married couples, my wife and I cheat. Not sexually (true, I can only speak for myself on this), but in terms of food. Both of us are publically committed to restrained and prudent eating behavior. It makes us feel better about ourselves, and reflects a wish–however insincere–to share the pain of denial. Beneath this thin veneer of civilization lies a sluggish, viscous swamp of grease and decomposing organic trash, bootlegged when one of us is far enough out of hearing for the other to safely open the refrigerator or pantry door. This arrangement works perfectly well, but would be ruined by the bag you describe. So thanks again. You’ve made a difference in one more marriage!

Great video, I kept seeing a dark spot moving in the background, but didn’t realize what it was till I read the comments. The bag noise was horrible, isn’t that a type of pollution also or am I making that up?

Whoa! I agree! I couldn’t even hear you speaking! What kind of a bag is that? It’s really really noisy!!!!! That bag is suited to a disco house! I think even if you are in disco house, they can hear it! Anyway, it’s eco-friendly so it’s forgiven.

I love Sun Chips- I will have to get a bag for movie night this weekend.
I find myself annoyed by my teenage children standing behind me eating and reading over my shoulder what I am reading online- and that’s just a small noise compared to that bag.

I think I might like that bag. My little one is always sneaking all the best stuff out of the snack cupboard and eating it up before I get a chance to have any – and Sun Chips are her favorites! With this bag, I’d know from my bedroom upstairs if she’s down in the kitchen digging into the chips again!

Kathy, I only tried the feed addy in the second comment. The first one was the regular addy. And this one is the regular URL.
Okay, I’m sitting watching that comment luv bar bop back and forth and back and forth and back and forth . . . okay, I’ve played two games of free cell, and the bugger is still moving back and forth. Ate a mango, that took awhile, and just as long to clean up afterward, geez they’re messy. Back and forth. It’s been fifteen minutes now. Back and forth. Twenty minutes. Ah, the hell with it.
You’re right. Comment Luv Hates Me.

the cat in the background seems pretty unimpressed by the noise
but hey, why don’t they just wrap stuff in plain paper anymore? when i was in Cuba in 2002 i could even buy some ice-tea type drink in multiple layers of ordinary newspaper, and i wouldn’t get wet hands for at least 15 minutes.
February 6th, 2010 at 9:53 am
I don’t think I’ve ever taken notice of the decibel level of a chip bag. But now, thanks to you, I will be much more conscious of the noise pollution I’ll create when eating Sun Chips.

. I’ll have to test this one out though. On a positive note, it’s fantastic that it’s biodegradable.
February 6th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
I think nothing of throwing our packaging into our landfills, but we really should start thinking and demanding compost friendly packaging. I cringe every time I take meat off a Styrofoam tray. Wish I could afford to shop at the corner butcher store, he uses old-fashioned waxed freezer-wrap paper.

and is that your cat up there on the counter drinking out of the faucet. i would totally shoot my cat in the butt. the first day we brought her home she jumped on the kitchen table. i said next time you do that, you’ll be in the middle of the table with an apple in your mouth. we have an understanding.

Sure enough. I was just listening to the YouTube video and my 5 year-old (who was supposed to be going to sleep), called out, “Mom! What’s that loud noise?” And my volume is only on “1!” Crazy. I don’t think I want to meet that in person.

If the vast majority of companies didnt see the money sign whenever they go, or appear to go eco they wouldnt do it. The supermarkets are all jumping on the wagon in the UK, love food hate waste etc etc. One look in their bins on the other hand which are always bulging over you will see a different story.
Rant over- as for the sun chips, Im flying to salt lake city in a week (not very eco I know but at least I dont lie to people and tell them im going by rowing boat – its the facade of the whole thing that irritates me) so i’ll experiment when I get to the States- although Salt Lake city is a Mormon town, do Mormoms approve of crisps? it wouldnt surprise me either way….

This is hysterical! I love your quote in the Wall Street Journal.
People could solve the whole noisy chip bag issue if they made their own potato chips, and used a brown paper bag. But that requires a little planning.
Can you imagine bringing your own bags to the chip dispenser at the grocery store? I also wonder if the plastics in the chip bag get into the bag’s contents. Makes me want to stop eating chips of any kind.

I thought this was going to be about the composting aspect of it. I am most curious about how it breaks down. I took a bag and didn’t cover it up, I just put it on the ground to see if it will decompose over the summer. It’s still there. It’s lighter in color but not really looking like it’s breaking down. So maybe I should blog about that and see if others are as skeptical as I am. I have the before picture and can take one now to show that over 3 months not much has happened. Just what is the material that is so crinkly????

Wow this is so typically American. Not convenient enough for you America? Should we be able to press a button instead and watch it vanish? Sure helping the environment can be an inconvenience but are you SERIOUSLY complaining about the sound of a crumpling bag?!?!? SERIOUSLY?!?!?! DO you know how great it is that its compostible?!?!? You people make me ill.
