So How Bad Did I Screw Up?
Stupid things I do January 14th, 2010Attention all shutterbugs!
How bad did I screw up my new(ish) digital camera? I think it happened when I dropped my purse getting into my car yesterday.
Every good blogger carries a camera with them at all times. But every smart blogger puts it in its carrying case so it doesn’t sink to the bottom of their purses and break when it hits concrete.
D’oh!
For the record, I can still take pictures with it. I just can’t see what I’m taking pictures of until I transfer them to a PC. I also can’t see anything through the small viewfinder. Why?!
Anyone ever done this and, if so, can it be fixed for much less than the cost of a new camera?
Stumble it!

January 14th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
I am the queen at dropping and breaking phones and cameras. It never fails and I will say it is definatly cheaper to buy a new camera than to get the one fixed.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
yikes. I hope there is a warranty clause that does not mandate the use of padded camera cases. It could be akin to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty or whomever cracking the magical looking glass. Who had the magical looking glass? Was that the Queen in Snow White or someone else?
Of course, you could always just “point and guess” like they did with some very early cameras, no?

Carico — Maybe I should switch to disposables? I wanted to cry when I saw the screen. Nothing I tried worked. I still don’t understand why I can still take pictures, albeit a little off center.
Chris — I didn’t ask yet about a warranty, and because I’m uber stupid, I probably didn’t even fill out the warranty card! I’m sorta wondering if my pictures will be just the same “pointing and guessing” as when I’m really trying. I was never any good before.
January 14th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
I’m more of a ‘get a new one’ kinda gal. Of course you dud not mention the make and model, age or cost of your camera and there’s the whole what’s broke and how much would it cost to repair it thing.
I’m also a ‘put the camera in the case’ kinda gal. Aka dork. Or sensible, cheap or frugal. Your choice!
Loved the ‘point and guess’ moniker!

Oh no! I can barely take decent photos even with the view screen to guide me. I don’t know what I’d do with a broken screen. I wish I could help, but I haven’t a clue. I’d try taking it to an electronics store and seeing if any of the knowledgable employees can help you, or call the manufacturer and see if they have any ideas. Good luck!
I’m only just remembering to take my camera with me places. I missed a great opportunity for photos the other day, but then I caught one when I had my cam with me on a recent grocery shopping trip. Which reminds me, I need to upload those photos and write that post!

Ouch!
I have never (knock on wood) broken a camera, but usually when the latest little gizmo’s go bonkers, the cost to fix always seems like 10x more than the cost to replace.
I would try out the warranty first though or find someone local who might be able to repair it. Avoid the advice from people at Best Buy or any company like that though. I swear, whatever they suggest to me, doing the opposite usually works out better.
Good luck!!

Barb — It’s a Nikon Coolpix P60, cost about $200. It’s about a year and a half old. I guess no matter what, I’ll have to go back to putting it in its case, even though I find that a PITA to deal with when I have a shot I want to get quickly. That’s why I got lazy about the case.
Surfie — Me neither. I’d be fine if I could at least look through the tiny viewfinder. I don’t understand why, if the LCD is busted, the viewfinder thingy won’t work either. I’ll probably go to the place where I bought it, a family-run place locally. Yes, you must always have your camera at the ready. It’s in integral blogging tool.
Monique – I’m afraid they’ll tell me it’ll cost a hundred dollars to fix. If that’s the case, forget it. I don’t even know if it’s possible to fix because I don’t understand what’s broken. The screen isn’t actually cracked. It’s like something inside is amiss. I doubt I filled out the warranty card and I did google a little and people said this kind of problem isn’t usually covered under warranty. I’m willing to get it fixed for a price, but not a crazy price!
January 14th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Kathy, I just ran your problem by my husband, the amateur photographer. He said that, if your camera is not a top-of-the-line model, it might not be worth it to repair it. But, if it was a more expensive model and it’s fairly new, he would check with Nikon about a repair estimate. He uses Nikons, and he said he believes that Nikon will give you a free estimate on the repair, but you will have to pay to send it off. Check the “Service and Support” (or similar language) link on the Nikon website, which should give you the option to email them about the estimate. Hubby said that you could go to a camera store and have them do the legwork for you, but there could be an additional charge, and you run the risk of getting stuck with an unscrupulous camera dealer. Hope this helps! Sorry about the camera–that totally sounds like something I would do. And then I would never hear the end of it from Camera Boy.

OK…you’ve learned your lesson. Always put the camera in a case in your purse.
I did the same thing….I learned the hard way also.
Look at it this way…it will be fun shopping for another one!
January 14th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
OK. I see it’s a Nikon, so not a cheap camera? Is it not covered under your house contents insurance? I don’t know how things like that work in the US, but certain items like cameras, watches, musical instruments etc., that get broken outside of the house are covered. Any one item valued at £1000 or over must be specified. Anything under doesn’t have to be.
Just to make you feel a bit better I let Mo borrow my point and shoot for her holiday. She returned it all dented and scratched! She dropped it on the beach. I reckon she dropped it from a great height, AND on a rocky beach myself! Thankfully it still works though.

I did this to a little canon powershot–also about a $200 camera–when I had it sitting on the computer desk after uploading the photos, and a child knocked it off. Whoops. I had to get a new camera. It’s the glass (because I investigated by pushing on it a bit, and the cracky thing grew longer, even though it didn’t look like it was on the front of the glass. You know?) And it was going to cost more for a fix.
Besides, it gave me an excuse to get a much nicer camera. Which I did. LOL
Still–it stinks to be without one for awhile, and $200 IS $200, after all.

Yikes. I would totally cry if I dropped one of my babies and if it’s broken or something doesn’t work, I’d rob Peter to pay Paul and buy another camera the next day. You’ll have to ditch the purse and start carrying a padded camera bag to protect your goods. And i sleep with my cameras next to the bed, a little unnatural, but I love them. Sorry. I would probably get a new camera. Canon.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:58 pm
oh, ouch.
Been there, done that – last year had a car accident with a 2 month old laptop in the car – Dell’s waranty is good, but not THAT good. I also somehow managed to smashthe screen of my Palm LifeDrive rendering it totally unusable – in both cases, repair was going to cost about 75% of the cost of replacement

Kathy,
The warranty card is usually for companies to get your address so they can send you stuff the rest of your life. Sometimes on the box it says stuff, or maybe the store you bought it has some sort of a repair program. Depending on how much you bought it for it MAY be cheaper just to buy another one but I’m the type of sap who would rather have things fixed if I could. You know, the whole “green” thing.
But you could always get a new camera and if this blog post becomes internationally popular, auction the old one off as historical memorabilia. Well, maybe not…

We had a Coolpix S40 (I think) of about the same vintage. They don’t even consider fixing them. It seems that anything other than a digital SLR is basically, disposable. For the replacement (not a Nikon this time) we broke our own rule and bought the extended warranty.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
I have two camera’s. A NikonD40 that I seldom use (because I don’t know how and can’t have the time to learn) and my little digital Kodak. I love my little Kodak Easyshare and have had it for about 3 yrs now. I like you, keep it in my purse and never in a case. There is so much crap in my purse that I think it keeps it protected. I’m really sorry this happened, you will probably have to invest in a new one somewhere down the road.

If you bought it with an American Express card, they will refund you the money. Otherwise, toss it. It will cost more to repair and the guarantee that it will be totally healed is probably not going to be forthcoming.
Consider it a lesson learned. A bad crappy lesson but a lesson nonetheless. I always keep mine in a case because I’m afraid the big picture-viewing thing (not its technical name) will get scratched.

I dropped my Nikon Coolpix 2300 a few years ago as I was handing it across the table at a restaurant. It fell into a cup of ranch dressing with its lens open. It was terrible. I took it to a local camera shop and they replaced the lens for $90. It cost $125 new. But my little Nikon was too dear to let die, so it was worth the cost. I now use a Nikon L18 (which gets 2-4 times more pictures on a set of batteries) but my old camera is still operational. I hope your camera recovers!

So sorry for your loss.
I believe for a camera a year and a half old, you are better off purchasing a new one (probably for less $ – with more features) than having it repaired.
You might want to get a Square Trade warranty for your next camera…with the accidental droppage add on ;^)
January 15th, 2010 at 5:25 am
absepa — Thanks for running it by Camera Boy (ha!) It’s not top of the line, and now that I’ve slept on it, I’m less upset about it. The thing is I wasn’t in love with the camera anyway. But I’m still upset that I did a dumb thing and dropped it with no protection. I’m still going to check with the place I bought it (not a box store) and see if they have an idea about cost of repair. I’ll make a decision then. If it’s 50% of the cost of the camera itself, I guess I’m going shopping.
Linda — An expensive lesson! And no it won’t be fun shopping. I hate shopping for things like this. I just want to point at something, take it and run with it. I don’t want to learn about all the features.
Babs Beetle — I hadn’t even considered whether it was covered under home owner’s insurance. But it’s only $200, so maybe not. I think Mo and I are cut from the same cloth. Good for her she didn’t bust it all up or you’d never loan her anything again.
Lynn — Well, I can’t see a physical crack on the outside, but that part in the corner where the blob is seems to indicate it’s broken on the inside. Glad you got a nicer camera out of your boo-boo!
V — I totally believe you sleep with your camera. And you’re not the first person to recommend Canon to me. I think that might be the way I go.
flit — Ouch is right. I’m sorry you’ve had bad luck with your equipment. We both probably learned our lessons.
Chris — I do want to see about fixing it to possibly save money on a new one and then I won’t have to feel bad throwing this one out (as it can still take a picture, just don’t know WHAT!)
Uncle Billa — I was afraid someone would say that. And btw, it seems like everyone’s buying those SLR cameras now. But $500 and up is too rich for my blood.
Spicybugz — We are two peas in a pod! I don’t like learning everything either! And I took this picture with my old (slow, but good) Kodak Easy Share. It takes a good picture, it’s just slow to click. And YES! I thought all the crap in my purse would be enough of a buffer, but I guess it sank to the bottom and then it was all over.
Suzy — Oh, wow. Good to know. But I don’t have AE. Yes, bad, crappy lesson. I sulked about it for hours after the discovery. Incidentally, my picture viewer thing never actually got scratched in all that time. Of course, that’s what my biggest worry was. Until now!
Maureen — Grey Screen of Death! Yes, it was. You should have seen me. Turn off. Turn on. Turn off. Turn on. Remove batteries. Put them back in. Turn on. Turn off. Cry. Oh, cell phone drops in toilets must happen hundreds of times a day somewhere. Were they saved?
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — Well, that’s one bit of good news. Yeah, bet the hubby regrets it. But yes, I’m wondering if it’ll ever be right again if I do get it fixed . Depends on the cost and how much I’m willing to spend for the chance.
morethananelectrician — I thought so.
TC — Yep. “Possible but not handy.” The thing that kills me is that I wouldn’t have cared so much if I could at least look through the tiny viewfinder. Why that doesn’t work, I’ll never know. Will ask when I take it in.
Steve — Oh for crying out loud. Ranch Dressing?!?! You must have wanted to cry. When you find a good camera, it’s hard to let go. That’s how I felt about my Kodak. If it weren’t for its inability to “be ready” for a shot, I never would have bought the Nikon.
kathryn — Yeah, it’s wrong and it’s a PITA. I don’t have a phone that has a camera. Weep for me.
mike golch — Eh, it ain’t that fancy!
wlmo — Maybe, maybe not.
Reena — I can’t remember what I paid, but when I looked on Amazon for this model, they sell there for $200. I have a feeling we paid more than that. I suppose if a repair, if possible, costs less than $100, I’ll consider a repair. And yes, I’m going to ask about warranty coverage if I buy new. Now I know I need it.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:48 am
Oh, I hate when things get brokened! I am not allowed to use the fancy DSLR camera, but we have a small, inexpensive camera that goes in the purse. I hope you can get it fixed or else get a new camera that you like even more!

I think I would be inclined to get a new camera. Or just try taking a bunch of pictures and maybe you can figure out how to hold the camera so that it takes a good picture. But that would drive me nuts. I think a new camera is the next step. I agree with you, if you put it in a case, it is hard to get it out in time to take the picture. Good luck.

Daisy — I don’t think I’m equipped to use a DSLR camera and now that we know I can’t take care of my things….
Marg — Yes, it does drive me nuts. It’s a very strange feeling to “guess” at your shot. I did take some photos of things on my desk while I was testing the camera and I cut off every single one of the subjects. Drats!
Feron — Yes, yes I will!
Lisa Alterity — Nope, it cost maybe $200-250. I just can’t accept that I screwed up so bad. I always thought all I had to worry about was the LCD getting scratched. Never that the insides would break.
Buggys — But I still remember when they weren’t and people got things repaired and they lasted forever. I guess I’m old.
Karen — Yes. I was so tired that morning and klutzy. Wish I’d been just a hair more careful. And I wish I knew to use the case from that day on.
SuziCate — My husband said “Just get another one. Whatever you want.” And that’s great, except I still feel bad for ruining it. It would have easily lasted several more years.
Shelly — I’m impressed you delete the bad shots before transfer. I’m so impatient, I don’t even do that!
Mr. Stupid — Or should I say Mr. Butterfingers?
hairstyles — Just wait….
Auntie E — I never thought about QVC. Are their prices sometimes less than retail? I’m starting to think I should just go with “cheap and good enough” if this is the way I’m going to take care of my toys.
Jen — I used my old tried ‘n true Kodak Easy Share. I think it’s about 7 years old. I don’t like to use it for action shots because it doesn’t react quickly enough when you press buttons. It’s fine for my What’s That Wednesday pictures, though. Perfect for staged objects. It was always better at macro shots than my Nikon.
Ken — OMG. Your gravatar scared me half to death. What IS that? It is weird to take a “blind” shot and then see what you got. But functionally, it’s broken.
Knucklehead — I’m already there.
Michelle Gartner — I guess I’m going to buy a new one and now I don’t really care how great it is. If I’m to consider them disposable, I don’t want to spend a mint. Actually, I just remembered, my niece got a new camera for Christmas and offered me her old one. I might just take it.
Leeuna — OMG!! I just found the button that does that!! I remember pressing the hell out of it the other day and it didn’t change views to the small viewfinder, but after reading your comment and trying again, IT WORKED!!!!! Thank you for prompting me to check it again. I would still like to see my shots taken on the LCD, but this might do until I get another one.
Branden — That’s an idea I hadn’t thought of. Thanks.
Condo Blues — DSLR? I don’t even know what that stands for, so I’m guessing I wouldn’t be able to understand how to use the damn thing.
Lily Johnson — I’m sorry too. I’m looking at it now and mourning its loss. Sorry camera!
Lauren — If nothing else, I’m comforted to know how many of you have dropped your toys, too. Now I don’t feel so bad.
Bryan — Oh, brother! That sounds like a huge pain. I hope it wasn’t an expensive one.
Anna — If I do, you can be sure I’ll blog about it! I’m increasingly annoyed with my hair right now. It’s long past time for a good cut. When I saw how long it had gotten, Locks of Love occurred to me as a way to make it go to good use.
January 16th, 2010 at 7:06 am
Oh, dear. That hurts!
Quite probably not worth repairing, sadly. As to why you can’t see through the little viewfinder, it’s because, unless it’s a DSLR, the little viewfinder is also an LCD screen, not a through-the-lens mirrored view.
If the house contents doesn’t cover it, and you have no itemised insurance covering your cameras, well, sadly, you’re probably screwed.

Are you ready for Regan’s old camera? It comes with a case!

That’s a bit of fall.
Based on my knowledge, even with warranty, it might not cover due to such damage is due to mishandling/accident and not manufacturer fault.
If u are still able to use the LCD screen, u would still be able to use it b4 deciding on the next purchase.
Hope this helps.

I did the same thing. I love the little camera and can still take pictures but sure miss the view.

You could always just use it as an old camera and look through the lens. My mother still prefers to use that instead of the big screens.

I think I would have started crying if I ever broke my digital camera! Although, since you cant see what photos you are taking until you move them on your computer, its almost like getting a SURPRISE every time you upload.

I just bought a new camera (I think CommentLuv is going to pick that up), and this post scared me silly. While I carry it in a lovely padded bag, I’m considering an insurance policy at this point.

You have cracked the LCD and depending on the type of camera you can replace it yourself there are websites that will walk you through it and if the camera is more then $150 then it’s worth it.

If it’s still taking pictures, then I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s unfortunate that the LCD screen broke, but it’s not completely done yet. You’ll just have to be old skool and put your eye up to the camera to take a decent shot.

Get a quote to see how much it costs to get it fixed. Same thing happened to my husband’s camera. We got it fixed and less than a year later, something else was broken. If you want to keep using it, post some of the funny shots you took by estimating what you shot without a viewfinder or screen.

Something similar happened to me a few months back . I broke the screen of my camera. I took it to a camera shop and got it fixed. It cost me about $100, but the camera itself was worth about $500, so it was worth doing, in my opinion.
Hopefully you can get a few quotes and see how much it’ll cost to repair. Camera’s are so cheap these days, you can get a decent one for not too much money. Good luck!

Doesn’t this make taking photos more interesting? I know a lot of them might not turn out okay but the unpredictability might make it fun? it’s like in the olden days when we didn’t get to see our photos until they were developed!

Oh and I forgot to say: you probably can’t see through the small viewfinder because it was damaged in the impact also. These days viewfinders are often digital i.e a tiny screen rather than just a bit of glass.

Did you ever get your camera fixed or are you still blindly taking photos?

Just an update to anyone who’s still reading: My nice sister is giving me her daughter’s old digital camera, which isn’t that old. I discovered I could get my broken camera to display the view through the tiny viewfinder, but not all the time. I think I’m giving up on it all together. Thanks for all the advice!

What kind of camera did you get?
February 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
I don’t have the time now to read all 71 comments, but as a camera store employee here’s my take.
The issue is a cracked LCD, that’s all. Nothing more. It can be fixed for about 150-175 USD. So, analyze the camera, determine if this is worth it. Regarding warranty, it does not cover impact damage. That is a rather nice camera, and repair may be worth it. I would send it to Nikon directly, and ask them for an estimate.
