I don’t have the time now to read all 71 comments, but as a camera store employee here’s my take.

The issue is a cracked LCD, that’s all. Nothing more. It can be fixed for about 150-175 USD. So, analyze the camera, determine if this is worth it. Regarding warranty, it does not cover impact damage. That is a rather nice camera, and repair may be worth it. I would send it to Nikon directly, and ask them for an estimate.

Just an update to anyone who’s still reading: My nice sister is giving me her daughter’s old digital camera, which isn’t that old. I discovered I could get my broken camera to display the view through the tiny viewfinder, but not all the time. I think I’m giving up on it all together. Thanks for all the advice!

Oh and I forgot to say: you probably can’t see through the small viewfinder because it was damaged in the impact also. These days viewfinders are often digital i.e a tiny screen rather than just a bit of glass.

Doesn’t this make taking photos more interesting? I know a lot of them might not turn out okay but the unpredictability might make it fun? it’s like in the olden days when we didn’t get to see our photos until they were developed!

Something similar happened to me a few months back . I broke the screen of my camera. I took it to a camera shop and got it fixed. It cost me about $100, but the camera itself was worth about $500, so it was worth doing, in my opinion.

Hopefully you can get a few quotes and see how much it’ll cost to repair. Camera’s are so cheap these days, you can get a decent one for not too much money. Good luck!

Get a quote to see how much it costs to get it fixed. Same thing happened to my husband’s camera. We got it fixed and less than a year later, something else was broken. If you want to keep using it, post some of the funny shots you took by estimating what you shot without a viewfinder or screen.

If it’s still taking pictures, then I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s unfortunate that the LCD screen broke, but it’s not completely done yet. You’ll just have to be old skool and put your eye up to the camera to take a decent shot.

You have cracked the LCD and depending on the type of camera you can replace it yourself there are websites that will walk you through it and if the camera is more then $150 then it’s worth it.

I just bought a new camera (I think CommentLuv is going to pick that up), and this post scared me silly. While I carry it in a lovely padded bag, I’m considering an insurance policy at this point.

I think I would have started crying if I ever broke my digital camera! Although, since you cant see what photos you are taking until you move them on your computer, its almost like getting a SURPRISE every time you upload.

You could always just use it as an old camera and look through the lens. My mother still prefers to use that instead of the big screens.

That’s a bit of fall.

Based on my knowledge, even with warranty, it might not cover due to such damage is due to mishandling/accident and not manufacturer fault.

If u are still able to use the LCD screen, u would still be able to use it b4 deciding on the next purchase.
