A Very Expensive Cat Chair
cats, work April 28th, 2010This month marks my 25th anniversary working at a local university.
Before y’all gasp and pity me for working at one place so long, I haven’t worked in the same job all that time. I’ve held several different positions in two vastly different departments, so it hasn’t been boring and I haven’t gotten stale.
Last week I was notified by the HR department that, as a gift for my years of service, I may choose between two kinds of $425 hand-crafted solid maple chairs.
Not a bad deal. They are very nice chairs, except I know deep down I will never sit in them because I’m not 93 years old.
Obviously, I would have to make a decision based on the seating preferences of someone else in my house:
Meet Shadow.
Her first favorite spot to sit is in the kitchen sink.
Her second favorite spot to sit is on a junky chair we keep in the dining room.
Shadow, my dear, you just got an upgrade.
I decided to go with the second chair since the rocker will probably slide on the floor every time she jumps on it and bang against the wall as a result of her girth.
The stationary chair will serve her well.
Of course, something tells me she’d be happier sleeping in a $2 hand-crafted cardboard box.
Too bad. She’ll just have to suffer in luxury.
Stumble it!

Is that something all universities do? Because that do that at my college, too. For something like 40 years, you get a nice bench. I know this because my boss got one a couple of years ago.
Shadow’s going to love the chair.

Congratulations on your 25 year milestone! I’ve been doing sort of the same thing since 1980. My customers love me so I do not think I’ve gotten stale. Surely not. Right?
I’d have chosen the rocker! I have 2 rocking recliners that all 4 of my cats enjoy daily… although not simultaneously! I also have 4 swivel chairs on my patio which they all believe are theirs. ::sigh::

I have worked for the State for almost 20 years. Last time I checked, I think I was awarded a paper weight. Personally, I would take the rocker and give your cat my hockey puck to play with.
April 28th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
WOW 25 years, I wouldn’t pity you at all I think that’s pretty impressive.
You and your shadow are getting quite the fancy chair. I have to wonder what it is about sinks that cats seem to like so much. I had one that did that too

That’s a really nice chair and even nicer is that when Shadow does start using it (with pillow or blanket) if guests show up all you have to do is remove the pillow and blow the cat hair off. It would work for the rocker too but you are right about it hitting the wall. My cat jumps on my rocker and smashes into the wall every time. Congrats on being recognized, it is a really nice chair.

I really like how the twirly thing to the left of the cat looks to be her tail. Very nice.
And cats never ever ever prefer what we would like them to prefer. Give a dog a basket, he’ll lie in it. Give a cat just about anything, he/she will look at it, lick a paw and then go lay down on your just recently tumbled dried black laundry. Mmm. Cats.

Nice chair. I’m sure Shadow will love it, but I don’t know if it’ll compare with the sink. However, give a cat a box and they have a bed, a hideout, or just a place for some quiet time. I get mail order, and Sophie gets the box. Heck, she even gets into the recycle bins.
I worked at one company for almost 20 years, in 5 different departments. The last one from 1987-2000. I moved around a lot until I found my fit.

Lucky Shadow.
But I would have that chair on eBay so fast…

Kathy, ask for the money, honey. $425 dollars! you can sit on my back for $350 and a snickers bar. i can be a chair for at least 5 hours and then, a folding chair.
April 28th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Oh, I have one of those TOO! Except mine is cloth so it is nicely accentuated with Himalayan cat fur. I brought it home for work for free – they were just giving it away and no, it wasn’t worth $425! I’m with V – tell ‘em you would rather have the cash than fire wood.

My human actually LIKED those chairs. But then she is way over 100, at least in cat years. And she would never get a rocking chair because she knows how we get in the way of everything. But anyway, the really important thing is not what my human thinks of the chair, but what I think of it, since I have more in common with Shadow than she does. And I think you should get a nice, plush, comfy cushion to go on top of the seat. Wood is not that great of a napping surface.

Congratulations Kathy! I wonder who decides on the gifts given to staff at these milestones. A chair is very unusual. Maybe they think that if you’ve made it to 25 years, you must be old and need a rocker, on the porch. I wonder what they give at 50 years!
In our house it’s a case of ‘If it’s a seat, it belongs to the cats. We have to cover the seats of all our furniture, and if guests arrive off come the seat covers. Shadow looks lovely sitting in the sink.

Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — Oh, I know you would just lurrrve a simple box! Tell your mommeh I have no idea why my EC is saying “Thanks,” but I say Thanks too for the visit!
Chris Casey — Yes, I did think of that, too. I don’t need Shadow rocking the chair over another cat’s tail. He wouldn’t appreciate it. I have no idea what comes after this. I think they start encouraging you to leave?
Kelly — Dunno. Possibly. A bench would be nice, too. Then I could pile it up with all kinds of stuff near the door.
Barb — Nah, neither one of us is stale. I think. Although I suppose we’d have to ask someone else what they think, but I’m not gonna. So I’m guessing one out of two times there’s a cat in the chair you want to sit in?
Bruce — And the cat wouldn’t care, I’m sure. I got a clock at 20 years, a pen at 10 and a pin at 5. So is your paper weight weighting down paper?
ann — Shadow is a giant PITA with the sink. She hangs out there because she’s hoping we’ll turn on the water for her. She makes preparing dinner or just being in the kitchen a challenge. But we love her, so she gets the sink.
Fisher — Aw, you’re right! And thanks!
Jen — Absolutely. Have to find a chair pad and/or blankie. I’ll have her shop online with me. And thanks. I agree the chair is really nice. I’ll be appreciating it visually. It’ll look grand in my study.
Wynn — Ha! Just noticed that. Funny! It does! Yep, you got the dog/cat thing down perfectly. Cats just aren’t open to suggestion. Dogs are happy their owners do the thinking for them. I think dogs are smarter.
Linda — Sophie knows what she wants. Boxes do make great hiding places. Shadow won’t be able to hide on the chair, but she can sit like the Queen that she is. Moving around a lot in jobs isn’t a bad thing. In fact, I knew a guy who held the exact same job for 35 years. I’d have put a gun to my head.
Nicky — Thankyouverymuch! I’ll at least be able to enjoy it visually. That is, unless I pile so many blankets on it I can’t find it anymore. We’ll see what Shadow wants first.
Nanny Goats — Har! Not a bad idea. Although I would love it if this chair is what weans her off the sink. You have no idea how hard it is to work in the kitchen when she’s there. Waiting and waiting and waiting.
GoingLikeSixty — I don’t know if anyone would want it unless they graduated from my university. Their seal is engraved on it. Holy cow. 42 years? I’d probably want the same thing — to be able to keep on working there. Honestly, what other job could he possibly find? Well, for what it’s worth, the $425 is retail.
Susan Montgomery — Diamond-encrusted, maybe? I received an oak clock at 20 years. It’s quite nice. I keep it at work, though, on my bookcase.
Karen — I know your cats rule (as they should!) I remember one of your cats thoroughly enjoyed being spun around on top of a swivel recliner. Crazy cat!
Daisy the Curly Cat — Thank you! Mercifully, they’ll ship the chair. I don’t know how I’d get it home otherwise. I don’t have a vehicle that could fit such an awkwardly-shaped item. I didn’t know you loved sinks, too, Daisy. So do you like that the metal is cool? Or do you just like it because you get in mommeh’s way?
Fin — Ha! Yeah. One of those short-sided ones, like a tray. That’d look real classy, wouldn’t it?
v — No can do. Already asked around. So you’re renting yourself out as a chair? Are you soft and comfortable?
Momma Drama — Don’t you just love it when you can score free furniture from work? I saved a barrister bookcase from the trash once. It’s lovely (and in my office at work). It had a broken base, but someone fixed it for me and it’ll last forever now (as long as I don’t break the glass in front.
Mom — Boxes are the perfect toy. For both pets AND kids!
Pricilla — I know you would love that many apples! And I bet you’d eat every last one of them. Shadow says “Thanks! I can’t wait!”
Sparkle — I promise I’ll get a nice chair pad to make Shadow’s napping time the most comfortable time of the day. That is, when she’s not laying in the crater she made for herself on the couch.
Lanny — She is and she says “Thanks!”
Kalvin Chinyere — Thank you. Sturdier is better in this house. And there’s the risk of Shadow rocking over our other cat’s tail. I’m sure Lucky wouldn’t appreciate a flattened tail. It’s all good.
Anne Israili Mom — I love her little locket, too. She has a bigger white patch on her belly, but we rarely see it unless she’s sprawled out on the floor, exposing it. Don’t tell her I said this, but she has a little bit of flab down there that seems to hide it. Shhhhh.
Babs Beetle — Thank you! I don’t know who decides, but there are rumblings about changing the procedure so that employees can choose from a gift catalog and pick something they want more than a chair. I think there have been just a couple of employees who’ve made it to 50 years, who probably worked up until the day they died. Hey, that could be me! Yeah, we’ll need a cat hair cover, for sure. Shadow says “Thank you. I like when people say I’m lovely.”
Lynne — Shadow would need a biiiiiig shoebox. You can’t see from the picture, but she’s very bottom-heavy. There’s a lot of Shadow you’re missing.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:36 am
Shadow you are very handsome. We are sure glad your Mom didn’t get stale at her job.
Your new chair is just gorgeous. Mom could make things even better by putting a box in the chair and then it would be purrfect. Also a little step up to get into the chair since you are a little roly poly. Good job Shadow getting that chair.

For 5 years I chose a small folding knife that included a tiny pair of scissors. I’ve never used the knife, but the scissors have come in very handy for trimming broken nails at work (very important — I work in a fabric store and I don’t want to ruin the fabric . . . or my nail). Ever try trimming your fingernail with a full sized pair of scissors? Trust me, you don’t want to.
For 10 years I chose a chiming wall clock. I didn’t really need it, but it was the best of a poor selection that included 9 watches, 5 pens, and other assorted knick knacks, all adorned with the store logo. I’m coming up on 15 years this fall, and I’m sure the selection will be just as useless.

Amazingly enough, I have the rocking chair version of that, but not from a school. My only complaint with it is it naturally tips backwards a bit far and it’s not fun to sit in without a cushion. It definitely seems like a good upgrade from a pen. My cat is really into rocking chairs, but only when I’m sitting on one and trying to read.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Marg — Shadow says “Thank you. I feel wonderful today that mommeh wrote a post about me and is giving me her nice new chair. I will be very happy sleeping on it, I assure you. I will ask her about the box.”
Heather — Lay off me, woman!
Cat Lady Diary — Not that I’m aware. There’s been some discussion about that recently. They may offer a cash gift in the future, but not as yet. I know, a rocker sounds very old, doesn’t it? I’d appreciate it if they paid my funeral expenses, especially if I died at my desk. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants?
[second Cat Lady in a row!] Cat Lady Larew — HA! She will, I’m sure. It’ll be a big day for her when it arrives. And thank you. I feel as old as I feel accomplished.
Grace — I won’t forget! I did think it might be fun to watch Shadow have to steady herself on a moving chair until it comes to a rest, but there’s that banging-against-the-wall thing to worry about.
Surfie — Yes, if it was white wicker on a porch, I would love it with a nice tall, cool glass of lemonade. And I love that you mentioned Windy like that. Yes, I think she might have liked to return the favor.
Grant — Yep, believe it or not. Started right out of high school. Had THE worst job on campus, stuffing invoices and paychecks into envelopes. Yes, you’ll get a pen at your 10th. I didn’t like mine. Too thin. I prefer those fat, grippy kind.
Anna — Thank you! It is a little different and it’s like they think we all have dark, heavily-wooded studies or something. The bottom color will clash with some of my oak wood, but we’ll make do.
DJ — Love him! (I left a comment for you over there, but it went missing. He’s adorable!) And oh boy, do I know what you mean about the paw prints. I’m forever wiping down the kitchen counters. I hate, hate, hate that!
SuziCate — You’re right, but it has to be low so she can jump in. I just weighed her yesterday. She’s 13lbs of plumpy furriness.
Ladybuggz — Trimming my nails? Are you kidding? I just rip ‘em off when they get too frayed. Yea, the selections are never what people really want, but it’s something and I never turn down a gift of any kind. But how many watches and clocks do I really need?
Tracy — I will!
Jaya — She’d appreciate that. As long as it had a luxurious pillow inside of it.
absepa — They gave us gifts at 5, 10, 20 and 25 years. (pin, pen, clock, chair, in that order). I’ll remind Shadow that other people think the sink is a lousy place to set up shop. She doesn’t listen to ME anymore.
Sam Liu — Shadow thanks you. She will love the chair, I just know it. I’ll take a picture of her in it and post back.
Regan — Obviously. It’s why we work. So we can pay off her house.
amy lilley — Shadow thanks you for calling her BEAUTEOUS. She has a little bit of a self-confidence problem on account of her wide-loadness.
Criminal Justice Degree — Agreed. I’d take a Lazy Boy chair over anything else. Of course, your lap makes the best cushion!

Shadow looks like my black cat, Cubby. He died several years ago. He was my baby, and I still miss him. He always announced himself whenever he walked into a room and followed me around like a dog. But, he never hung out in the kitchen sink, although he did like to sit at the highest point in a room. In the living room, the piano was his favorite spot. He used to walk across the keys but had no talent. He preferred chasing mice to practicing his scales.

Shadow will look awesome sitting on her fancy chair! My dogs (Harry and Honey) have their own car called the K-9 Cruiser. It’s a 5 series BMW wagon. We can’t go with an SUV because Honey is older and can’t climb up in one. We can’t go any smaller because Honey is 80 pounds, and Harry is about 90 pounds. Why BMW? Well, ask Alex. It’s all he will drive. And this is not his car, it’s Harry and Honey’s. LOL! Our cat has his own twin bed, a cat bed and goes where and whenever he chooses. Cats are like that, aren’t they?

erin — “Where does the time go?” I’ve no idea. One minute I was a twenty-something accounting clerk and the next thing I know they’re telling me I need a rocking chair. Ouch.
Lauren — Yes, considering I haven’t worn a watch in 10 years. Did you know the watch business is suffering? People don’t need watches much anymore since they can get the time from their cell phones or other gadgets. Who would have thought? I’m sorry about your Cubby. It’s such a loss when a pet dies. I’m sure you loved hearing Cubby’s piano “recitals.” I bet it was music to your ears, no matter how bad he performed.
Katherine — I also don’t knit. Your contest is a good idea. Except here’s the kicker. Shadow is actually not very fat (I weighed her the other day). She just looks fat, the poor girl. You reminded me of a contest I wanted to run once, where we’d take pictures of the craters our pets make on furniture from sleeping on them. Biggest hole in the couch wins.
New Jersey Memories — Thanks for coming out of hiding! Yep, bags and boxes. Best toys ever made that were not intended as toys. There’s nothing more fun than watching a cat-in-waiting inside a bag and the ambush that comes after when an unknowing other cat walks by!
Linda Medrano — It sounds like Harry and Honey rule your roost. I can’t imagine having 170 pounds of dog running around my house. I’d have to put all my nice things away (if I had any — ha!)
Shieldmaiden1196 — Shhhh! Seamus doesn’t like to think he’s a fat cat. He prefers large-boned, silly.
Linda Dobson — Yeah, we don’t realize what we have until we don’t have it. We’re so spoiled!
Duni — Shadow says thankyouverymuch! I’ll have to get a nice pillow for her to sit on when the chair gets here. Which reminds me, I never heard back from the HR department about delivery. Gosh, I hope they actually send it!

The chairs are very nice but I agree with you that they are suited for an older person. It would be nice if they would give you a choice. The money would be nice or even a piece of jewellery. I’m sure your kitty will enjoy it though!

I do hope Shadow appreciates all those years of toiling for you to get her a chair… what a good cat owner you are.
But a rocker??? Wow what a great way to say “Congrats! You’re old!”

I’m sorry your comment did not show up. I wonder where it went and who else it took with it? Maybe Blogger is having a hiccup.

” except I know deep down I will never sit in them because I’m not 93 years old.”
Kathy, you crack me up. Its good to know your cat Shadow might reap the benefits of your new chair!

Nice chair. Shadow actually likes hard surfaces? Latte likes the soft, cushy types. I don’t know if I’ll be here for the 25 year mark, but I will certainly want the rocker. I will be very old by then and will need it!

I would have grabbed the rocker. I love to rock. My cats don’t like rockers tho. Congrats on 25 years. I worked 35 1/2 before I finally hung it up.

Mom to the Power of Three — Yes, I agree. It’d be nice if they’d give us more of a choice. Or the equivalent value in cold hard cash. Can’t have everything. Shadow’s happy, though.
Maureen — Yeah, we do it all for them, don’t we? The irony of a rocker is not lost on me. It should come with a cane and a little wheelie cart too.
DJ — Maybe! Oh, holy crap. I just went back to your blog and found craw fish! Ugh. Looked like roaches to me at first. {faints}
meleah rebeccah — Hmmm, I wonder if Shadow is 93 years old in cat years?
JD at I Do Things — Sha-DO! Well, she’ll always still have the sink to sit in 17 times a day. Ugh.
MisterXWebz — Shadow thanks you kindly.
Maryann Karweta — Yes, she sits on another hard chair just like those, although there is a little chair pad on it. I’ll have to get another one for the anniversary chair. Hey, the 25 years thing sneaks up on ya. Be careful. It just might happen to you too.
grannyann — I suspect I’ll be hanging it up at 45 years if I stay at the same place. I started there when I was 20. It’s possible.

25 years is somthing to be proud of. It show your a hard and loyal worker. That chair is nice and atleast it’s sentimental. I just spent ten at my company which is really the only company I’ve ever worked at. A great company but the ten year gift came down to a chain saw and a high end French Crock Pot whose name I keep forgetting. Since I live in a row home, I’m not mister soup.

Just hope your kitty loves it and has many sweet dreams on it

Lady Banana — Yeah, and I just found out I HAVE TO ASSEMBLE IT!!!
