If I Say It, I’ll Have to Do It
Fun, literary, work May 21st, 2010
This post is more for my benefit than yours.
I’m taking a two-week vacation in early June. Everyone who knows it asks me where I’m going.
While I’d like to say I’m jumping on a plane to take me to some faraway place, the truth is I’m headed to a dark, dank corner of my basement.
I plan to lock myself down there for at least the first week so I can finally get my book off the ground.
No sunlight.
No fresh air.
No email.
No cats.
No husband.
No TV.
No distractions.
Just me and my laptop.
I’ve been wanting to write a book for the last couple of years and I settled on the subject matter only recently. You’ll probably all be mad at me for not telling you what it’s about, but I’m superstitious and feel that if I tell you, I’ll jinx myself.
I also feel if I announce publicly that I’m going to venture into book territory, I’d better actually DO IT.
So send me your good vibes that despite being surrounded by dusty old Christmas decorations, furniture we don’t use, kitty litter boxes and bugs falling on my head, I will still feel creative enough to knock out a few thousand words a day of decent book material.
I consider this venture the hardest thing I’ll ever do, but probably the most rewarding.
If you’ve ever tried to write a book, I’m open to advice and suggestions, but I’m scared you’ll all tell me it’s a waste of my time.
You know what?
Lie to me.
Stumble it!

May 21st, 2010 at 5:14 pm
I’ll lie to you. It’s a waste of my time.
So what’s the book about? Huh? Huh? Huh?
I know. I’m always full of questions.

I’m sprinkling virtual Good Writing Glitter on you right now! Can you feel it? Make sure you put take some live plants down there with you so you’ll have a nice environment. (Plus they’ll help freshen the air!) I would love to write a book one day, but I don’t think I’ve got one in me. I can barely think of anything to write on my blog!
I understand not wanting to let anyone know what you are writing about. Can we at least know what genre?

I’ve not written a book so no advice here, just best wishes for success. I do have a dream of one day publishing a book of my favorite recipes, but that’s not quite the same thing. Good luck!

Goodbye ol’ friend – before you leave, can I take away your Internet connection from you !
Yeah – you didn’t think you’d get away by not mentioning that eh !
Now that you have blogged about it and more people know – you have raised your own bar !
Now go write that best-seller.

I can’t wait for the results! If your book is as entertaining to read as your blog count me in as your first sale.

Surely you can tell your niece about the book? Because you love me so much? It could be like part of an early birthday present or something. Will it be fiction, like a story or just a humor book? Or perhaps nonfiction? I am very interested and would love to help if you need it and would love to be in the dedication.
May 21st, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I would love to tell you that I’m jealous of your vacation destination but that would be less than honest. I do wish you luck though and look forward to hearing what it’s about. I’m assuming that once you finish the jinx factor will have been removed and you’ll give details.

While I am not trying to defeat your lofty goal, we all have novels bottled up inside of us. I think it best to lock yourself in the basement and try and hammer out a short story just for practice sake. Trying to pack as much meaning, insight and inuendo in 50 pages will teach you a lot more than attempting war and peace the first time around. ….. good luck!!!

Having read several (ok, two) books, I feel extremely well qualified to offer this little nugget: best of luck!
Seriously, I wish you great success! A friend of mine wrote a book about holidays and had a tough time finding a publisher. She lucked out and met someone who worked for a publishing company who ended up helping her get past the mailroom garbage can. Stephen King also wrote a book called “On Writing” that was pretty interesting, and applicable even if you’re not looking to write horror stories.

Ooh, awesome! I have a historical book published, and it was very hard to keep going. Just don’t give up! Give yourself mini-deadlines if you have to. I finally got it done, but that’s because I had a deadline from the publishing company.
I’m also working on a novel now, and it’s been hard to get started. It should be fun because it’s based on my blog, but it’s still a lot of work to get started.

No cats! Wow, you are serious. I’ve written three completed, published books (well, the third one isn’t coming out until August, and Sparkle is the author, not me), and several as-of-yet uncompleted ones, and I’ve never done it cat free. I’m just not that hardcore.
My advice? Just do it. And really make it your first priority. You SAY you are going to do that right now, but saying and doing are two different things. You’ll find this out, trust me. Even when you have a husband who is annoyed that you are spending all your time in the basement and not doing whatever he thinks is more important than your book. My fiance is a musician and a creative person and supposedly understanding, and I still had to train him. And if you are doing it cat free, trust me, he will be bugging you because the cats are bugging him. But don’t let that distract you, tempting as it may be. (And it will be tempting after you’ve been at it a while.)
I have no concerns about your writing ability, your story, your theme, or any of that. I know all that will be just fine… as long as you stick to the plan.

Unfinished Rambler — Sorry, you got caught in my spam filter, don’t know why. I will only say that it’s fiction/humor. Please don’t make me say anymore.
Surfie — Ooo! Good writing glitter is so pretty! Thank you. I at least need to put a nice lamp down there to help warm the place up. The overhead naked light bulb ain’t gonna cut it. I have trouble writing for the blog, too. But I’m hoping because the book has more focus, I’ll succeed at getting more words out. All I can say is that it’ll be fiction/humor.
Linda — Books of recipes are very popular. I could see you writing a book of recipes with little stories about your favorite food memories weaved throughout. Try it!
Jaffer — You caught me. I have considered turning off my wireless connection for a few hours a day while I’m writing. The temptation to get on Facebook and read blogs will be too great.
Kim, Rambling Family Manager — Ah, thanks! It helps to know I have some support here before I even finish.
Regan — Your mother knows. Ask her. Yes, fiction and humor. That’s all I’m saying here. You will most definitely be in the dedication. You’re not only family, but you were my very first reader on the blog and stuck with it while Junk Drawer got its legs.
ann — Yes! Once I finish. Of course, it could turn out to be crap and I still may not divulge anything. I have a lot of fear going into this, though I have some good stuff written already, so I shouldn’t feel so afraid.
Bruce — I do have some material under my belt and I like it. That’s why I’m even thinking I can do this at all. I laughed at my own stuff and that’s always a good sign because I’m typically so critical. Yes, I’m taking it in chunks. I’ll defeat myself if I think I can knock this out very quickly. Although Stephen King wrote one of his best-sellers (before he became famous) in three weeks, so it is possible.
Daisy the Curly Cat — Oh, you tell your mommeh that I’m lazy too. That is why I’ve been sitting on the idea for months. I did get 5,000 words out, but it’s taken a long time to do that. You know, that lazy thing.
Nicky — That’s great about your friend. It does take some measure of luck to get a book out to the masses. I’ve decided to go the self-publishing route and see where that takes me. I have Stephen King’s book On Writing and it’s one of the best books I’ve read, well, on writing. And you’re right. It’s applicable to any writer. I highly recommended it. I just re-read it last month to help me get remotivated to do this.
Cashier — Congratulations on your book! That’s wonderful! I would buy your novel in a second, since I love your blog so much. I predict big things for you.
Arafat Hossain Piyada — Time is everyone’s nemesis, I think. But when I consider how much time I waste online, I have absolutely no excuses.
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — Yes, and you’re free to eat them when you’re done.
Sharon Heg — Thank you so much. I don’t expect I’ll blog much during that time, and if I do, I may not be able to respond to comments as I usually do. We’ll see.
Lisa at Boondock Ramblings — Thank you for the vote of confidence. I need all the help I can get.
Grace — You’re right, and I’m sick to death of saying over and over that I’ll do this. That’s why I thought I’d commit to it publicly.
Jen — No work email and no fun emails either. That’ll be easy to avoid because I can just keep the email program closed. Internet will be another story, since I want it for research and ideas. Thanks for your support. I feel lucky that I have what I think is a great idea. I researched a bit and didn’t find anyone else who’s written a book like it, so that gives me hope too. Oh, yes, I will be happy to sign it for you.
Tracy — Oh, please. This coming from a woman who’s been posting on her blog every day for what, a month? I can’t even do that! I have to remember what you said about being free to write crap first. I know it’s good advice. I can always kill things later. The important thing is to write every day and give myself a word count quota and hit it every time.
New Jersey Memories — I know so many of us bloggers have a book in our minds. I guess I’m at the age now where I don’t want to be one of those people who talks about it but doesn’t get serious about it.
Arnold — God, I hope so. Or won’t I be embarrassed?
Janiss — I’ve already experienced the problem with the cats. The last time I worked down there, husband decided it would be fun to send two of them down to “see how I was doing.” Well, they were all freaked out because mama is never down in the basement and isn’t this fun and let’s try to sit on her lap, oh, wait. The table is better and how ’bout some fur on the laptop? Congratulations on getting three books published. That’s really something. Thanks for your support!
Cromely — I normally only take a one-week vacation, but I knew if I didn’t take two, I would too easy can the idea of spending what little there was on doing anything but writing. That first week is going to be dedicated to little else. Yes, it wasn’t until I had a eureka moment that I got serious about starting. Then I knocked out a bit of it and thought “I’ve got something here.” Then I got distracted by a million things. Enough is enough. This has to get done!
Barb WillThink4Wine — Because it’s the only place in the house that’ll be quiet and I can’t see outdoors. I need to stare at a cement wall to keep my focus. I have a hard time writing for the blog when I’m in my kitchen, where I can see the back yard. Hours and hours are wasted daydreaming. I don’t know. We’ll see how my plan goes. I have considered going to the library at the university where I work. I think it’ll be quiet enough because the majority of students are gone for the summer. If all else fails, yeah, might have to go to a hotel.

I have just finished my second novel. There is nothing more rewarding than typing those two special words, The End.
My best advice: BIC (butt-in-chair) Write the beginning, middle and end. Edit
Good luck and enjoy!
May 22nd, 2010 at 4:59 am
Good luck Kathy. I have always wanted to write a book but I don’t think I will ever be brave enough. I am sure whatever you write will be good. Just keep that great sense of humor that you have in it and it will be a best seller. I am looking forward to reading this great new book. And the other thing, is have some fun doing it.

I once had to edit “blahbigitty whooo ha ta da!” out of my almost final edit. Writing, if it’s what you want to do, is never a waste of your time, even when it stinks. Writing itself is its own reward – or wouldn’t have been writing since childhood.
Advice? Write what you want to write, without worrying about marketability. If you love it, if it’s appealing to you, that will be reflected in the work and people will catch it.
Once you get in the flow, as it were, it can completely consume you. Enjoy it. Wallow in it. Have fun.

Awesome! I’ve written 2 books so far, and published one of them. Have you ever heard of Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month)? The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. My husband really is supportive of me when I do it, he’s the one pushing me out of the house (I can’t write at home, too distracting).
So, my advice is coffee and liquor. Coffee for when you need the motivation, liquor for when you hit writer’s block. And I’d suggest setting a daily goal for yourself, so you can browse the internet and such a little bit. Otherwise, you’ll go through withdrawal and not be able to write anything until you check Facebook.
Another tool that I love when I need to force myself to write: Write Or Die http://writeordie.drwicked.com/ It forces you to keep typing. Which is really the goal, to knock the first draft out. Don’t edit, and don’t care how much it sucks.
Good luck! Have a writer’s block eliminating drink on me!

I didn’t read any of the comments, so sue me if somebody wrote this already…
A famous author said at a book fair that when she is writing, she doe not share details of what she is writing about. Her point was that the book is the story, and if you share parts of the story as it is being written, then what is the point?
I always thought that made sense, especially when I read blogs that basically are a daily update of a book.

J.A. Anderson — I bet. I’m trying not to set my sights on the end yet. I will, however, do a little joy joy dance when I’m a quarter finished. BIC. Duly noted. That will be the first note of inspiration I tack on the wall in front of me.
Marg — It took me three years to be brave enough. I just hope it doesn’t take me that long to actually do it. Thank you for your kind support.
absepa — Oh, my dear absepa, thank you so much. It feels amazing to be getting all these good vibes from everyone. It really helps me.
Momma Drama — I feel the vibes! I wrote a bit yesterday and that felt good. I’m trying to write a thousand words when I do sit down for book writing. But it’s hard because I still want to write for Junk Drawer and I’m struggling for something to write here, too. Ugh.
JD at I Do Things — That’s right, sister. NO EMAIL. At least not while I’m writing. I’m putting myself on a strict schedule, like a job. Thank you for the tip. It’s a little like hating exercise. You just have to DO IT. We always feel better afterward, right?
daughterbonnie — I’ll be expecting them! You made me laugh about your edit. I’ve already done something similar, just to get a partial phrase down so I wouldn’t forget it. I think an editor will be my best friend.
Lin — No they’re not! They’re freak, annoying cats, not lap cats. They not only bug me for attention, but one of them talks. all. the. time. He won’t shut up. I expect to hear him scratching at the basement door to get in, but he ain’t gonna.
Ron — Thank you, Ron! I think I’m going to tack up a picture of you on my wall where I write. You are such a happy and positive person. I need all your good energy.
puglette — Keep a pen by your bed. Seriously! Oh, and I didn’t make it clear, but I intend to keep blogging right through this. Sure, the posts might be shorties, but I do want to keep the flow going on Junk Drawer. So don’t leave me!
Pricilla — Oh, you make me laugh so. I know you are educated. I can tell because you have impeccable grammar and diction for a goatie.
Stephanie Barr — Thank you for your good advice. You’re right. I never want to write with the hope of selling a million copies. I want to do it because I think I can write something entertaining, despite my occasional bouts of fear. I will wallow! I’m doing it!
Babs Beetle — You can email and I will get back to you. I’m just not emailing in the middle of writing or it will take me twice as long to produce anything. Thanks for your support, my dear.
meleah rebeccah — Oh, I was so hoping you would give me some advice from your own writing experience. Come on, spill it!
Dorothy Stahlnecker — I’ve never tried writing a book before. The closest thing to that was my Paris journal. I wrote for 1 hour every night and I’m so thrilled I did or I would have forgotten everything. It made me happy to know that the people I shared it with enjoyed reading it. That’s partly why I think I can do a book. Do you still journal now or do you put it all toward the blog?
Michelle Hartz — Congrats on your book success! I’ve known about Nanowrimo, but knew I could never do that if I was to keep blogging at the same time. That word count and short time period is simply insane. I may not write at home either. Thinking the library at my work. Do you think they’d let me keep a bottle of scotch out on the table if I promised to share with other patrons? I just found Write or Die yesterday. It’s so true. Everyone says just get. the. words. out! Thanks for your tips. Really appreciate it.
Fifthmarch — I deeply appreciate all the votes of confidence you guys are giving me. I would be tickled if anyone would drum up business for it when it comes out. Notice I didn’t say “if?”
MrsBlogAlot — Thanks. I think I can, I think I can, I think…
goinglikesixty — Thanks for sharing that author’s remark. Not only do I think I’ll jinx it, but I fear that the idea won’t sound as good as I think it is if I say what it is. The book has to tell the story, not me. So right on with your comment.
CatLadyLarew — “vacation in your basement.” God, it sounds like a horror movie, doesn’t it? I might try going to a library at the university where I work and see if that’s helpful or not. The students aren’t really around now, so it ought to be quiet enough. We’ll see.
Karen — For some reason, you just scared the crap out of me. That’s because I didn’t write today and I feel a block coming on. Don’t say it’s easy! But thank you for believing in me. Means a lot.
May 23rd, 2010 at 6:13 pm

What an excited (awesomely scary too) project you are taking on! Good for you and you’ll do a great job as we who read your blog are aware! Let us know when it goes on sale. You’ll be very busy signing copies and mailing our copies to us.

I started a book called “Horizons Unlimited, Ltd.” and a play called “My Sister – My Lunch” but stopped in time.

I participate in NaNoWriMo every year and I’ve had a great experience. I have your same superstitions about revealing the contents and even Stephen King recommends keeping everything to yourself until the first draft is done then locking it away for a month until even you forget about it and can go back with a more objective view. Everyone has their own style. Good luck!

Yay, for you. I came to the conclusion about a week ago that the only way I’d ever really start on my “project” is to take a week off by myself!

I agree with Tracy – just write whatever comes into your head so you can get the crap out of the way. We’re all behind you 100% (do we get a “Friends and Family Discount” after it’s published)? Call me if you need inspiration (hahahaha).
