The Stinky Weight Loss Plan
cats, food, Fun September 5th, 2010So how much weight have you gained since blogging?
Me? A whopping 30 pounds and I’m tired of walking around with all that extra tonnage. So what am I doing to lose?
- Walking two miles most weekdays and eight on weekends.
- Eating a healthy breakfast and lunch, with fruit for snacks.
- Having a very light dinner.
- Eliminating the Frisbee-sized iced cinnamon bun I used to have twice a week. OK, make that three times.
I’ve had good success during the first month. And rather than mark my weight loss milestones by a straight number of pounds, I’ve decided to mark them by the number of Stinkys I’ve lost. Stinky, my beautiful, sweet kitty, weighs 5.2 pounds.
My progress so far:
| Weeks 1-2 | Weeks 3-4 |
Every time I lose a Stinky, an angel gets its wings. Wish me luck. I’ve got four more to go! And to the guy who asked me last week if I was losing weight, you have no idea how close I got to jumping in your lap and giving you a big sloppy kiss. Thank you!
Stumble it!

OK, WHERE are you losing weight? Seems that a “before” picture is in order… of Stinky.
September 5th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
That’s hilarious! I was hoping I would lose weight on the C25K program, but I haven’t modified my diet so I suppose that is the answer. I was hoping that just the addition of exercise would be enough but not so far. And it’s been 5 weeks.

Wait, I can blame my weight gain on blogging? I started having my friend put me through some tough workouts 4 times a week. It’s a lot more fun to have a group of us working together, and Sam takes no prisoners. I think he takes delight in torturing us. I love that he switches things up and I can never know what to expect. It keeps things interesting, the workouts seem to go by fast, and my body will eventually look good if I stick with this!
I can’t wait to see how many Stinkies you lose!
Good luck!

Heh. I’m on the Sandwich Diet. I drink three cups of coffee between 8:00 and 12:00, then I have a little bag of doritoes or a little bag of cheetos, and a coke, and then for dinner I have a sandwich (bread, mayo, mustard, cheese, and meat), a bottle or two of water, and a multi-vitamin. Three times a week, I have a Monster Nitrous, Extra Dry. Sometimes more. I also only sleep a couple hours a night.
It’s like a healthy diet. Sort of. There’s corn. And a vitamin.

Dieting, not a fun sport. Why oh why is it so much easier to gain than to lose?

Congratulations! Keep up the good work lady. I also had put on a few pounds the past year and some of the rest seems to have shifted to places I would rather not mention. I try to eat right most times.I swear those cookies just call my name in the middle of the night though. I thought hmmmm I’ll get a puppy it will make me have to be out more. So I did and we walked faithfully for months. Then the hot weather set in. I bought a treadmill thinking it would be wonderful to use during these triple digit days. Sadly I find all kinds of reasons not to step on it. I’m happy to tell you that not all is lost. The dog loves walking on the treadmill and is quite fit and trim as I type. I see now where I failed. I should have gotten a cat instead

I kicked myself into high gear right after the new year and so far I’ve lost 30 pounds!!! I’m down to my college weight and loving it! But…working out 4 days a week is a LOT of commitment:( On the plus side, good for you and keep up the good work!
September 6th, 2010 at 4:19 am
Congratulations!
That is a tiny kitty you have there. My former cat Chloe weighed around eight pounds, I think, (it’s been over seven years since I scritch-scratched her chin.) Anyway, Stinky must be a mere whiff of air.
Regardless I’m struggling to maintain my one-Stinky loss.

goinglikesixty — I was hoping the first 10 would come right off my butt. As for Stinky, she was always slender, except for the hanging belly years between 5-12.
Pop and Ice — I had to look up C25k. Sounds like a great program, but yeah, looks like they expect BOTH diet and exercise. I once lost 25lbs without exercising, but that was 10 years ago. I realize at my age now, I can’t do it with just one or the other. I hate that it needs to be both!
Surfie — Oh, yes. It’s totally the reason why I gained. I swear, there was a whole year where I didn’t exercise once for at least 30 minutes. My ass became part of the chair. It sounds like you have exactly what you need. I’ve often thought I needed someone to belittle me into moving more. I do a pretty good job of that myself. Lots of self-talk before putting my sneaks on. Keep it up, girl!
Rufus Opus — That sounds exactly like what got me into trouble. Replace the coke with a whole box of cookies, and that was me. Dude, at least you have the vitamin.
C Lanctot — I gained in my 20s, too, but I could lose it all just by thinkin’ about it. Now? Totally different story. Working twice as hard for half the benefit. I want to scream.
Katherine — You’re absolutely right that having a dog to walk would help. Just read a study about it on another blog. Something like people who go to the gym only work out 2 hours a week, but people with dogs get out and walk for 8 hrs/week. Like you, I had a hard time walking this summer. The heat made it near impossible. But I’m taking advantage of the good weather now. Everybody hates treadmills.
brookeamanda — Congratulations, girl! That’s remarkable. Yes, it’s hard working out, but I tell myself “Would I rather sit here in front of the laptop for 30 minutes or walk for 30 and feel awesome afterward?” It gets me up and moving every time.
cardiogirl — Yes, Stinky is very tiny. She’s also 18 years old with a thyroid issue. So we are always trying to get her to put on more weight. Maintaining Stinky losses are the hardest part. I know what I have to do when I hit my goal weight. And it doesn’t involve cinnamon buns.
Daisy the Curly Cat — Poor Harley. I know you are only making a funny because you love Harley like we do. Well, maybe a little bit less when he spoils your good times.

Good for you! It’s so satisfying to meet weight-loss goals, especially when someone notices and comments on it. I haven’t had much of an appetite since my surgery, so I’ve lost about five pounds…it probably would have been 10, but the only thing I’ve really wanted to eat is ice cream.

I am trying to lose 30 pounds, it was about time I lose the last 30 pounds from having five kids… I can no longer use my baby as an excuse because #5 will be 3 in October.
I wanted to get it all off before summer was up- I started in May laying off the sugar and walking every night. But I lost a little motivation when summer got really hot and stopped exercising with regularity. The good news is that I didn’t put any weight back on because all I ate was Popsicles when it got hot.
When I think about losing 30 pounds I think about how many 5lb bags of sugar that is and there is no way I would carry 6 bags of sugar all day long…
I have lost just over 3 Stinkys since May- I have 3 more Stinkys to go. Good luck!

Karen — You’re not the only one who’s said we should rename her. But it’s the only name she responded to. Her first name was Hobbes. She didn’t like it.
absepa — Got that right, sister! Oh, now why’d you have to mention ice cream? I can eat a half gallon myself in two days. Chocolate chip cookie dough. I think you’re lucky you lost weight after surgery. Lots of people gain because they don’t burn off nearly what they take in. Good for you!
Babs Beetle — You think right. I’ve publicly announced it now. Gotta stick with it. I hate to call it dieting. We should all just be eating sensibly, right? Dieting is a dirty word.
Barb — I do too, although I bet they don’t weigh as much as I think. They’re mostly floof, right?
Lynski — OMG. That’s so awesome! Congratulations for making a positive change and getting off meds. Really. That’s so amazing!
Pricilla — Stinky cats are the very best kind. Uh. Try me. What does Abby weigh?
Phunnieone — “Then I can tell people I am losing Twitches” Ha! Cute name. Then everyone will think you’re taking medication for your mental disorder. Or something.
VetTech — It’s totally the internet’s fault! I was pretty happy with my weight before I started blogging and didn’t get out of a chair for like 10 hours straight. Somehow thinking about weight loss in terms of how many cats I’m losing really motivates me. It helps me strive to lose the next Stinky so I can add a Stinky head to my progress chart.
Michelle Gartner — I blew it this summer, too. Honestly, it can’t be healthy to walk in the sort of heat we had this year and I never wanted to walk before work when it was dark. So that meant no moving whatsoever. Congrats on the three Stinkys! I’m rooting for you and so is she!
Tarheel Rambler — Hee! You know, my two mile walks are much, much easier now. The hardest was the first week. It took all of my physical and mental energy to get out there and get it done. Now, it goes by so fast, which is why I do four miles when I have more time. Please, God, let me stick with this! xoxo, Lee.

I started late this summer with my exercise routine. Because of pain in my hip I had a difficult time walking. Riding my bike is my prefered exercise anyway. Many years ago I used to ride out of town on the county road, but I had a dog that ran with me. With her gone and no one to ride with I was afraid to ride alone. My daughter showed me her walking route around town and we rode it on our bikes, that was late June. I’ve been riding the route almost daily ever since. After the ride I get in the pool and cool down and stretch. In two months I’ve lost 25 lbs. Still have about twice that to lose. Don’t know if I can keep it up over the winter.
Congratulations on YOUR progress. Maybe we bloggers can motivate each other.

It is actually fantastic with cilantro, lime, chipotle pepper, sea salt… with some avocado to boot. Congrats and keep it up!

Hi Kathy!
It’s always been hard for me to gain weight – however, since I’ve become a serious blogger – I’ve actually been able to put on a few pounds. Which is a good thing for me! So I don’t want to lose weight – BUT I do want to lose an inch or so of my newly acquired “love handles” which I’ve never had before.
So, what am I doing to do lose my love handles? I’m being more consistent with certain exercises, while blogging – I’m trying to munch on veggies like jicama, bell peppers, and snap peas with hummus, instead of an entire bag of Pepperidge Farm Geneva Cookies hahaha.
Cute idea of having your goal measured in terms of how many “Stinky’s” you can lose.

Knucklehead! — I guess the key is where and in front of whom you lose your Stinky. Mind your manners now. I wish you luck on your weight loss endeavor and hope you lose as many Stinkys as you need to.
Linda Medrano — I agree. Unfortunately for my husband I got fat and happy when we got married. I’m shooting for thin and happier.
Nicky — My co-worker keeps a foot cycle under her desk at work. The jury’s out on whether it’s working or not. For a time, I used to stand while working at my desk. All that did was make my feet hurt.
Kim — Hey, that’s not a bad deal. I’d love to hear someone say they think I lost weight when I didn’t. It’d be my little secret. Why do cats sleep exactly where we don’t want them?
Moonshadow — Congrats on the riding and losing! I’m a little worried myself about winter. I won’t walk then, so I need to find something else to do. It doesn’t help either having a month of Thanksgiving and Christmas eating. Keep up the good work, lady!
Master Dayton — Holy cow! 48lbs?! You’re my hero. Think of it as almost ten Stinkys. Rack ‘em up!
TC — I have a feeling the cabbage diet would be the same kind of diet. I’m somewhat of a yo-yo dieter too. But you’re right, quitting smoking beats any weight loss.
Katherine Murray — I know I need to add resistance training to my walking. Good for you for adding more to your routine. I’ll get there eventually. Right now, it’s just the walking. At the rate you’re going, I’m confident you’ll lose your last two Stinkys.
Kelli — OMG. I love the Pepperidge Farm cookies. So much so that I don’t even buy them anymore. It’s like crack. Just can’t do it. If you need to gain weight, just never move from your chair. That “worked” for me.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:48 am

A lot of people already noticed that I gained weight and I’m getting bigger and bigger. I also noticed it because my pants and shirts are getting too tight. Sometimes, I just smile to them and said that this what I want in the first place. I know how to gain weight, I know how to lose it as well. Just eat proper diet and be cautious of what you’re eating.

Lin — I dread the sort of weight loss challenge that comes with menopause. It’s been easy to gain 10lbs a year blogging, so I fear that with menopause, I’ll have to work three times as hard just to maintain any kind of loss. You have my deepest sympathies.
Lynn — I’d punch someone if they asked me to my face if I was gaining weight. I’m thrilled I can button the top button of my pants now. Baby steps… We all know how to lose weight, but knowing and doing are completely different things, eh?
Criminal Justice Degree — I think it’s because we’re gearing up for a long winter’s hibernation. I’d like to head into Thanksgiving and Christmas down 30lbs. I’ve got to try some weights myself. They say strength training is as important, if not more important, than aerobic activity the older we get. Sigh.
meleah rebeccah — I believe you. I have to say, part of my motivation for losing was that picture Val took of us when we met this summer. I was pretty mortified by it.
Jen — And same to you. Remember our pact? We’re going to post new pictures of ourselves on our blogs, minus the excess baggage. Keep up your good work too!
Linda — And I would never ask….
Lynda — Good idea, but I know how hard it is to get up off the chair and move. I didn’t do that for three years and look where it got me. Pencil in a walk every day. Make it a “must do” calendar item. Good luck to you!
Lisa — The lure of the computer is what got me in trouble. But I keep telling myself, “Go walk for half and hour and you can get back to it later. It won’t miss you when you’re gone.” Good luck!

Hey Kathy, Great that you are at least trying and taking action, it’s not easy to lose weight.
Also, make sure to drink plenty of water and if you can try riding a bike for exercise too, because it’s low impact and you will lose more unwanted fat and it has resistance which will tone your muscles and burn even more fat…
