A Weekend What’s That and Comment #23
Blogging, Fun, contests November 15th, 2008I knew when I started the What’s That? Wednesday series, I figured there’d be times when I’d forget to post one on Wednesday. As it’s turning out, not only do I not always have an item for a Wednesday, I feel like posting one on Saturday. I’m scattered like that.
So here goes, your weekend version of What’s That? Wednesday:
How it works:
1. The photo shows a small portion of a larger object.
2. First person to guess the object it’s a part of wins either 500 Entrecard credits or a Junk Drawer magnet, your choice.
What’s That?
Today also brings us our first Comment Extravaganza winner, Bernie O’Hare! In my last post, I wrote that my husband would pick a random comment from each post leading up to my blog reaching its 10,000th comment. The winner receives a Junk Drawer magnet. Dave picked #23.
Bernie runs a very popular political blog called Lehigh Valley Ramblings. He stumbled onto my blog through the blog of newspaper columnist Bill White, who mentioned The Junk Drawer. When Bernie spotlighted my post about grade school memories almost a year ago today, it gave my readership a nice shot in the arm and I’ve never forgotten what that did for me.
I share this history with you because it illustrates how much sheer luck is involved in growing your blog. If Bill White hadn’t mentioned me, Bernie never would have found me and then a year later he wouldn’t have suggested me to our regional paper to be a member of Valley Blogosphere. I’m eternally grateful for the new exposure, both in print and online.
So if you’re a struggling blogger and you think no one’s reading you, don’t give up. Keep writing your best stuff and you never know when someone with influence will find you and give you a boost. It can come from anywhere, anytime. Be ready for it.
CONTEST CLOSED. We have a winner!
If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed!
Stumble it!

Yes, you are absolutely right. It’s mostly luck that brings you new readers and new friends.
Heck, if Darren (problogger.net) had not guest posted on BlogBloke.com in August 2007, we probably would never have met !
Even if Darren and I don’t each other that well, I’m eternally grateful !
I’m guessing that picture is a hole for a hook to hang something on the wall (probably a pair of socks or a tie)

I am going to guess the holding-onto part of a baby’s pacifier. Even though it looks like the baby would have to have fingers as skinny as spaghetti to use it.

Now I don’t know if you have these in the (warm) US but it looks a bit like the top part of a ‘Hot water bottle’ stopper to me. So I will say a screw thread cork style top. If that makes sense :O)

My guess is a bottle opener. The non-opening end, if that makes any sense at all.
Thanks loads for the blogging encouragement. I’m really enjoying writing on my blog, but sometimes I feel like I’m yelling into an empty room. Having you and JD leave comments on a couple of my posts really gave me a boost.

Boy,one of those Junk Drawer magnets would surely look great on my fridge! I’m guessing it’s the top of a shoehorn.
Although I don’t comment very often, I do stop by every day because I really enjoy reading your blog posts and all the comments.
Keep up the good work!

I just read a blog entry from a mom struggling with potty training her kid then I came here and before I even read the post I thought why does Kathy have a picture of a toddler’s potty chair seat on her blog?
I have no idea if that’s what that is, probably not, but it certainly got my interest.
Seriously though that’s not my guess. I guess that it’s a bottle opener. I have not read the comments so I’m probably the 412th person to say that but that’s what I think.
November 15th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
It’s the hook thingy you use to hook nylons to a girdle! Hmmmm…I think maybe my age is showing again.
Wait! I’ve got it! It’s where the eyelet on an athletic shoe attaches to the shoe! Nikes maybe?
November 15th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I think it is the top part (handle)of one of those bouncy balls for kids. They hold that part and bounce on the ball. I am always up for a magnet!!!

November 15th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
I would say that it’s the top of one of those kid’s bouncy toys, but that’s too big, so I’ll guess pacifier even though that’s a sucky guess.

Ok this was a tough one but I did my home work :
This is Tinky Winkys head thingy when he has a severe cold and hasn’t been feeling well. This is of course on of the Teletubby icons, who I am sure your very familiar with. When he, uhm, she, uhm it is feeling normal it is an intense blue, but you caught him , uhm, it on a bad day. I’m surprised he, uhm, she, uhm .. any way let you take her, his photo on that day. Very rare shot indeed. I am truly Impressed.
This is not spam, I swear.
And if it isn’t that, it is part of an experimental candy which only people in your city Block get to taste test and it’s not fair.

Haven’t a clue in hell – since the pic makes the object (or part thereof) seem a lot bigger than it actually is, what it looks like and what it is are 2 different things – okay – that’s fairly incoherent but then again its 12:45 in the morning and my eyes are at half-mast…I gotta go to bed now

hi Kathy,
I’ve been thinking about this since yesterday, but that hasn’t helped, and now I see in the meantime that people above me have “stolen” my answers. I was thinking it might be a funky toilet seat, or the hanging-up end of a toilet brush, or the beer-cap-popper-offer end of a wine bottle opener, or a combo toilet-brush-beer-bottle opener. Hey, can I get a patent on that last one?
Seriously though, I didn’t get a chance to guess on the stapler last time. Can you repost that one?

EVERYONE: Thanks for playing! We have a winner, so check out Sunday’s post. Congratulations, Babs! Now, onto the good guesses, the almost guesses, and the insane guesses.
Jaffer — The random connections we’re all making in the blogosphere amaze me. I know we met at Blog Bloke’s place, but didn’t know on what post. What a lucky connection!
Daisy the Curly Cat — That’s a good guess, Daisy. And picturing a skinny-fingered baby makes me giggle. You’re so funny!
Babs beetle — YOU ARE THE WINNER! Congratulations, and yes, we certainly do have hot water bottles. BTW, my chiropractor tells me heat is the worst thing for a back injury. This I found out after three days of using the bottle!
lala — I kinda sorta know what you’re talking about, but only a vague idea what that is. I’m guessing it’s used for kids’ shoes. Or klutzy adults?
Kelly — Believe me, I struggled for a good long while. Patience and diligence will get you everywhere. The cat/dog toy guesses seem to be popular. I love your meme! I might do it, except you said you can’t clean first. Crap.
unfinishedrambler — Oh, that’s rich. You think I have a spoon rest in my house? That would assume I use my stove. Ack! Don’t remind me about the cost of my site ad. It peeves me that I can’t lower it. I would if I could.
chat blanc — Very non-committal and not a bad guess. But no.
muskrat — No, but I love your guess! Are you hungry?
TheSnackHound — You did guess correctly, but you gotta beat Babs next time. She lives here.
brooke — Close, but no cigar.
Sherry Martschink — Both good guesses, but nada.
Joe — Nope, but it pleases me you thought it was hard. I beat my head against the wall trying to come up with really difficult ones.
absepa — Yes, it made perfect sense, but you’re wrong. Sorry! Stick with your writing and know that building a readership takes time. Join some social networks, Twitter and BlogCatalog to get the word out to more people. Network, network, network!
Singular Girl — I know. The size makes it harder to guess. There’s no perspective. Maybe next time I’ll put a coin or something next to the item so you can at least gather how large or small it is.
Alan — No, but pet toy is a very good guess.
Mrs. Mecomber — I love, love, love the Teletubbies guess! It absolutely looks like one of those freak things. I’m happy I don’t know which one has a head like that.
Lori — Don’t worry. I’m continuing this series, so there will be plenty of chances to win something. And thank you so much for your visits!
April — Hilarious! And, frankly, would it surprise you if I did? Yep, bottle opener seems to be very popular. I’m so giddy that this threw so many people off.
Lee — Oh for crying out loud, Lee! A girdle? LOL. Do they even make girdles anymore? Inquiring minds want to know.
Dad to Two — Awesome guess! But, sorry. Nope!
Preston — Don’t worry, dude. You’ll get one eventually. I’m counting on you.
Jodith — Good one, but no. Our sugar bowl handle at work looks just like it, so I’m impressed.
Kaye — Yes, a pacifier is literally a sucky guess.
Jeff — Oh, brother. You and Lee. What decade are you guys living in?
Donna — I first read your guess as pop tart. Sorry, I’m hungry. And no.
DJ — Ooo, good guess! Yeah, the whole randomness of discovery with blogs is wonderful. I love finding out how people find me. Sometimes I still can’t figure it out. It’s proof that breaks can come from places you’d never anticipate.
ImitationAngel — You’re not alone in your guess, but sorry. You get a thumbs down. I do try to watch that my flash doesn’t distort the color of an item. If I can’t get a decent shot, I try another item.
Maureen — Interesting guess, but alas, it’s wrong. I never forget some of my lucky breaks. They happen so randomly, it’s a beautiful thing.
Chris (Casey) — OK, now you’re just making sh*t up. Is there really such a thing?
Lauren — Oh, my, now there’s a new phrase I need to remember! Do you mean a spoon rest? See my earlier explanation why it would NEVER be that!
Beamer — OK, thanks for letting me know that it’s Tinky Winky with the knobby head. Seriously, I’m so happy I don’t know that gang of freaks. I suppose the parents in the group are thankful that craze has passed. At least I hope it has.
Broadway Matron — That’s OK. I’ll make it somewhat easier next time by putting a coin next to it to give it scale. Hope you got a good night’s sleep!
Bernie O’Hare — And careful with it — it’s FRA-GEE-LAY! Glad you won. I wanted to remind readers about how much luck factors into blog success.
kouji — When I started out, I never thought something like that would happen. I love the way it unfolded.
Shinade — Yes, it does look like part of a Fisher Price toy, nice and chunky and smooth for a baby’s slobbery hands. And there was nothing wrong with your grammar, my dear. Remember, I’m insanely peeved by bad grammar in print (see my current post), but not here in The Drawer.
Bryan — Nope, but good guess. And, hey! You were today’s random comment winner! Congrats for being #37.
Data Entry Services — Nope, but I do love how people are working on these things together at home. I like a post that puzzles people!
robert bourne — Yes, I can see how it’d be the end of a letter opener. Robert, you do very well for yourself. You’re a fine writer and you are recognized for it by the Midnight Wanderers. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Besides, something tells me you wouldn’t stop writing even if no one read you. It’s in your blood. Am I right?
Trade Show Guru — OMG. A combo toilet-brush-beer-bottle opener? You get massive points for creativity. But, um. No. Don’t fret. There’ll be plenty more of these in the future.
Shelly — Could be, yes. But no.
mrsmouthy — No, but you’re in good company. I’m so happy this misled everyone! Hey, are we giving out cash now?
storybeader — Ah-ha! But it’s not! Yea for me!
meleah rebeccah — Both really good guesses, but nope. I would have totally guessed a pacifier myself.
Mama O — No, but I do have cats, though none of their toys are plastic. They prefer cloth things they can chew and slobber all over.
amber — Thank you so much for the award and I’m glad you mentioned where you found me. Canucklehead! Doesn’t he have the best online name in the history of the Internet?
karen — Here’s what you do: Never leave your house. Refresh my blog every minute of the day. Cancel all your friends. Give up your life and then you’ll be first. You can do that, right? If you did, you would have won!!!
The Hawg! — You are. And I’d never have needles like that in my house. A friend is trying to talk me into learning knitting, but all I can see is me sewing something to my shirt accidentally. Probably best I don’t try.
KFJ — Yes, it does, the kind you can hang. But nope!
