What’s That Wednesday
contests, What's That? August 18th, 2010UPDATE: See additional photo below!
Like always, I hope that today’s What’s That item is hard enough to make your head hurt, but not so hard that no one gets it.
How to play:
1. The photo shows a small portion of a larger object.
2. First person to guess the object wins a Junk Drawer magnet and your choice of bacon bandaids, chocolate chip cookie soap or toasted Post-it notes.
Item Info:
1. This item is rather old.
2. It is not mine.
3. It’s very cool.
What’s that?
Since no one got it yet, here’s another picture. Same part of the object, different angle, more revealed.
Does this help?
In other Junk Drawer news:
In June I gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal about the loud Sun Chips bag. A marketing reporter found my blog post and video about the ear-splitting noise the 100% compostable bags make.
The article finally appeared yesterday. I’m quoted in the third to last paragraph. They also used a snippet of my bag demonstration 25 seconds into their video (click the Video tab at the top of the article).
Now go stare at the picture above for an hour and drop your guess in the drawer.
Go on! Get going!
Stumble it!

At first I thought it was a spoon handle. Why a spoon and not a fork, I have no idea. But then I saw you said it was “very cool”, so it must be the handle of an ICE CREAM spoon or scooper thing!
By the way, maybe you should consider having an Honorable Mention prize for the most creative (but wrong) guess. Beamer for the win!

Is this the item in it’s entirety? There seems to be something going on on the left hand side of the photo that’s confusing me.
Right, here we go…. I think it’s a carpet weight to stop a rug curling up in the corners. It has little spikes on one side that stick into the carpet. Even if I’m not right, I should be.
Just thought. Do you even have rugs and carpets in the US?

Boot scraper….to scrape mud off boots.
Honestly I have no idea but that’s what I’m guessing.

I think it’s the back of a hairbrush–one of those really pretty, vintage-y hairbrushes.

Dang, I already know what this is, and I still don’t know what it is.
Congrats on the WSJ interview!

It looks a bit like the peddle on my daughter’s piano. Did you pop by for a visit and I missed you ?
August 18th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Aw, Katherine beat me to it. I also think it’s a pedal on a piano.

First thought was a brush of some type, but nope that’s not it.
It’s a handle of something, maybe a bed warmer

I need new bacon bandaids! lol
I think it’s a paddle or scraper for an ice cream churn. or just a flat ice cream scoop.

I looks like a lid lifter from an oldfashioned wood cook stove. Prongs on the end fit in the lid and you lift it up to reveal the fire beneath. Very hot, but still pretty cool!
August 18th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
Is it a Celtic love spoon handle? Probably not. Those are you usually made of wood. Drat!

Hi, all! Some of you are on the right track, most of you are out in left field.
Babs is right that something is going on over there on the left of the photo.
p.s. CBS Radio called me this morning for an interview after having read the Wall Street Journal article. I gave the reporter about 10 minutes of sound bites. Not sure where in the world I’ll find the finished piece online, but if I can find it, I’ll post about it.
August 18th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
See, now the left hand side looks like grass, but then it looks like it has a rubber back, so it might be carpet, though I’ve never seen a carpet that colour before. You don’t show enough of it, so I’ll be very vague and say a foot pedal of some sort.

Is it one of those piano foot pedal things? Or the end of a spoon/fork/knife?
August 18th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Its either a hair brush, or maybe a lint brush? I have no idea I am terrible at guessing these!
And PS: Congratulations on being quoted in the Wall Street Journal!

To Linda — Cool as in neat.
Nutrition Degree — What?
Beamer — You’re welcome.
EVERYONE — I’m sorry I haven’t been around much. NBC and CNN both did stories about the loud Sun Chips bag yesterday and I’ve been a little distracted. A snippet of my bag demo video appeared in the NBC (Today Show) piece. If you’d like to see it, I’m at the :55 mark.
I may need to post a better picture of the What’s That item that shows more of the object. I’ll let it go for the day and if no one gets it by tonight, I’ll add another picture. But some of you are in the general area, so it’s conceivable someone will get it soon without help.
August 20th, 2010 at 10:02 am
It’s a special holder for a Sun Chips bag. It keeps the bag open at just the right angle so you can reach in and grab a Sun Chip without touching the sides, thereby avoiding prolonged exposure to the annoying noise.

I think it may be some sort of display case and that is a clip that holds something in place. It’s small, that much I have deduced (Like that Sherlock Holmes word?)
